Healthy Food Broccoli Exerts Bronchoprotective Response in Asthmatics

By Kyle J. Norton

The lungs formed part of the respiratory symptoms, sare a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax). The organ plays a critical role in inhaling oxygens to the body and exhaling carbon dioxide from the body.

Respiratory disease is medical conditions that affect the breathing organ and tissues including inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves, and muscles breathing,...

Bronchoconstriction is the constriction of the airways in the lungs associated with asthmatic attacks due to the tightening of surrounding smooth muscle, with consequent coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

The most common symptoms of asthma are episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, and reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.

Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.

Asthma not only interferes with daily activities and also can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.

Believe it or not, African-Americans in the U.S. die from asthma at a higher rate than people of other races or ethnicities.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases, researchers examined the effects of bioactive compound sulforaphane derived from broccoli on the pulmonary bronchoconstrictor responses to MCh challenge and the responses to deep inspiration (DI), in asthmatic patients.

In a total of 45 moderate asthmatics that are administered 100 μmol sulforaphane daily for 14 days, researchers found that
* Sulforaphane ameliorated the bronchoconstrictor effects of MCh on FEV1 significantly (on average by 21 %; p = 0.01) in 60 % of these asthmatics.

* However, according to the documenting the great heterogeneity of the responsiveness of these individuals to sulforaphane, sulforaphane aggravated the bronchoconstrictor effects of MCh on only 20% of patients and no effect on the same numbers of patients.

The efficacy of sulforaphane in bronchoprotective response was attributed to the activation of the activities of Nrf2-regulated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory genes.

In other words, sulforaphane blocks only some types of bronchoconstrictor hyperresponsiveness.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "in asthmatics, sulforaphane treatment resulted in a significant reduction in specific airway resistance and also increased small airway luminal area and airway trapping modestly but significantly.".
Taken altogether,  broccoli may be considered a remedy for the treatment of bronchoconstrictor hyperresponsiveness,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
