Green Peas, the Potential Anticancer Functional Foods

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Exposure to toxic chemicals has been a major cause of cancer initiation.

Believe it or not, the California judge ruled that some coffee sellers were required to brand the beverage with cancer warning labels due to containing acrylamide, a chemical compound in the list of chemicals in the facilitated cause of cancer or reproductive harm.

According to the national cancer institute, acrylamide to be reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen, based on studies in laboratory animals given acrylamide in drinking water.

Acrylamide, a chemical substance used primarily to make polyacrylamide and acrylamide copolymers. has been included in that list since 1990.

Acrylamide (AA) is classified as a Group 2A carcinogen according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, but coffee only contains a small amount of AA.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of malignant tumors, researchers investigated green pea anticancer property.

Pisum sativum (Family: Fabaceae), as known as green pea processed nutritional content of fiber, protein, starch, trace elements, and many phytochemical substances have been found to protect the cell DNA integrity through a number of mechanisms, including
* Antixodant against the onset of oxidative stress in the induction of cell DNA damage.

* Anti-inflammatory against overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines to induce cell damage.

* Other health benefits of green peas include antibacterial, antidiabetic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypercholesterolemia,

According to chemical analysis, rich in apigenin, hydroxybenzoic, hydroxycinnamic, luteolin, and quercetin, were contributed to anti-carcinogenesis property.

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cancers,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
