Herbal Eyebright ( Euphrasia) Protects the Human Corneal Cell Integrity

By Kyle J. Norton

Human Corneal Epithelial Cells (HCEpC) isolated from the epithelium of the Human Cornea have been used in a wide range of basic ocular studies involving problems associated with the cornea.

The corneal epithelium is the barrier function that plays a critical role to defend against many types of injury, trauma, or infection.
The cornea accounting for approximately two-thirds of the eye's total optical power covers,
* The iris
the iris (plural: irides or irises) is a thin, circular structure in the eye that controls the diameter and size of the pupil to allow the amount of light reaching the retina.
* The pupil
The pupil is a black hole located in the center of the iris that allows light to reach the retina
The anterior chamber
The anterior chamber (AC) is space in the eye that is behind the cornea and in front of the iris.

In other words, the cornea, with the anterior chamber and lens, refracts light, with the cornea

Corneal disease happened mostly in the aging population, is a medical condition that can cause clouding, distortion, scarring and eventually blindness.

Other common causes of corneal diseases are infection, cataract, genetic proposition, use of contact lense, eye injury, and diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, and vernal keratoconjunctivitis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and Down syndrome.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of eye inflammation, scientists examined the protective effects of eye drop containing Matricaria chamomilla and Euphrasia officinalis extracts in UVB-induced oxidative stress and inflammation of human corneal cells.

Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infection and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.

According to the tested analysis of HCEC-12 cells exposed to UVB radiation and treated with the eye drops at various concentrations,
* The administration of eye drops protect corneal epithelial cells from UVB-induced cell death and ameliorated the wound healing.

* The eye drops exhibited a strong antioxidant activity in the inhibition of ROS expression and protein and lipid oxidative damage.

* Furthermore, the eye drops also exerted anti-inflammatory activities by decreasing the proteins in activating the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as COX-2, IL-1β, iNOS expression,

* Moreover, the eye drops counteracted UVB expression by inducing antioxidants expression of glutathione synthetase (GSS) and superoxide dismutase 2(SOD-2) expression and restoring the HO-1 levels to control levels.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "These findings suggest that an eye drop containing Matricaria chamomilla and Euphrasia officinalis extracts exerts positive effects against UVB induced oxidative stress and inflammation and may be useful in protecting corneal epithelial cells from UVB exposure".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection of human corneal cells, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
