Healthy Food Cabbage Inhibits the Liver and Cardio Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

The expression of oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

Dr. Ercal N, the lead author in the study of the relation of toxic metals and oxidative stress, wrote, "Antioxidants may play an important role in abating some hazards of heavy metals. In order to prove the importance of using antioxidants in heavy metal poisoning, pertinent biochemical mechanisms for metal-induced oxidative stress".

There is no single cause of oxidative stress. Some researchers suggested that a number of factors can facilitate the onset of oxidative stress, including cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.

Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress presented in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity.

Liver oxidative stress markers such as serum MDA refer to oxidative stress in the liver tissues caused by the overexpression of free radicals or reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes in the liver.

Dr. Halina Cicho┼╝-Lach, the lead scientist said, "Redox state constitutes an important background of numerous liver disorders. The redox state participates in the course of inflammatory, metabolic and proliferative liver diseases.".

And, "Hepatocytic proteins, lipids, and DNA are among the cellular structures that are primarily affected by ROS and reactive nitrogen species. The process results in structural and functional abnormalities in the liver".

In other words, liver oxidative stress over the long-term induced damage of proteins, and lipid and alternation of cell DNA can lead to liver diseases, including cancer.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the treatment of cardio-diseases, researchers examined the effects of cabbage extract on oxidative stress in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts.

Based on the results of the experiment,
* Cabbage extract protected against H2O2-induced cell death and did not elicit any cytotoxic effects.

* Cabbage extract suppressed ROS production and increased expression of antioxidant proteins (SOD-1, catalase, and GPx).

* Cabbage extract also inhibited apoptotic responses and activation of MAPK proteins in the initiation of cellular response in oxidative stress-exposed H9c2 cells.

* Cabbage extract preserved mitochondrial functions upon oxidative stress.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "cabbage extract protects against oxidative stress and suggests that it can be used as an alternative therapeutic strategy to prevent the oxidative stress in the heart".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be used for the treatment of oxidative stress-induced cardiovascular diseases,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
