Cruciferous Vegetables Lowers the Risk of myocardial infarction in Patients with GSTT1*1 allele

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is the third leading cause of death. Approximate 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

Stroke is caused by the accumulation of cholesterol and other substances that build up the arterial walls. In other words, if cholesterol building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the body causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, leading to the death of some cells in the brain.

According to the statistics, every year, more than 790,000 people suffer a stroke, including 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Most cases of stroke occur in people over the age of 65.

Myocardial infarction is a severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local brain neurons to death. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential post disease complications.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm or leg, trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.

Although, there are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. some researchers suggested an unhealthy diet may have a strong and negative implication on the onset of the condition.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for the management of post-stroke, researchers examined the association between cruciferous vegetable intake and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) on glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) against coronary heart disease.

The study included a total of 2042 patients with a first acute nonfatal MI and population-based controls (n = 2042) living in Costa Rica, the area of residence, were genotyped for a deletion polymorphism in GSTM1 and GSTT1 and an Ile105Val substitution in GSTP1.

According to the food-questionnaire returned
* Compared with the lowest tertile of cruciferous vegetable intake, the highest tertile was associated with a lower risk of MI among persons with the functional GSTT1*1 allele (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.58, 0.84) but not among those with the GSTT1*0*0 genotype (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 0.83, 1.82) (P = 0.006 for interaction).

* Furthermore, the protective effect of cruciferous vegetable intake among those with the GSTT1*1 allele was greater for current smokers (OR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.36, 0.79) than for nonsmokers.

* More importantly, GSTP1 and GSTM1 did not modify the association between cruciferous vegetable intake and MI.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Consumption of cruciferous vegetables was associated with a lower risk of MI among those with a functional GSTT1*1 allele, which suggests that compounds that are detoxified by this enzyme contribute to the risk of MI.".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the management of myocardial infarction with patients with GSTT1*1 allele, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
