Pinto beans (Phaseolus) Promotes Gastrointestinal Digestion

By Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract and other parts of the accessory organs of digestion including the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder), involved in the function of breaking down food into smaller and smaller components then absorbed before passing them as nutrients and fluids to the body.

In other words, the digestive system includes gastrointestinal tract (GI), liver, pancreas, and gallbladder with a healthy function of breaking down food into nutrients and fluids for the body's need.

Gastrointestinal diseases are the conditions of the digestive system associated with the disorders involving the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.

The most common causes of gastrointestinal diseases are a bacterial or viral infection, inflammation, poor circulation of the intestines, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, particularly long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs. However, gut microbiota, a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract has been found to induce a significant effect on digestive health if imbalanced,

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking out down food after intake for nutrients through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Indigestion, on the other hand, is symptoms of another digestive disease, including GERD. Most cases of indigestion not caused by underlying diseases can be resolved quickly.

People with indigestion experience symptoms differently. Some may feel the symptoms of occasionally while others may feel often and daily.

There are a number of risk factors associated with digestive disorders including bacterial and/or viral infection, inflammation, lactase deficiency, anti-inflammatory drugs and certain conditions such as ruptured or perforated organs, muscle dysfunction, gallstones.

However, some researchers suggested that there is a strong correlation between the risk of digestive disorders in obese patients.

Conventional medicine used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders is depending on the disease that triggers the disorder.such as antibiotics for bacterial infection, painkillers for stomach pain.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of digestive diseases, scientists examined the effects of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptides released from thermally treated Phaseolus vulgaris (pinto) in gastrointestinal digestion.

Where Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors play a critical role to widen or dilate blood vessels.

Pinto bean is also known as common bean, genus Phaseolus and the family Fabaceae. The legume has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.

According to tested analysis,
* The <3 kDa fraction of the post pancreatic sample showed high ACE-inhibitory activity (IC50 = 105.6 ± 2.1 μg of peptides/mL).

* Three fractions isolated from the peptides, showed the highest response for the ACE-inhibitory activity.

More precisely, the chemical compounds that exerted the ACE-inhibitory activity were hydrophobic amino acid, (iso)leucine or phenylalanine, or proline.

Taken altogether, pinto beans as be considered ACE inhibitors for the improvement of gastrointestinal digestion, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
