Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Processes Antiproliferative Activity Against Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cell proliferation is a radical growth of cells to replace the damage or injury through the cell cycle division.

Cell proliferation is a process and a necessary step for wound healing.

All normal cells undergo cell cycle division to replace the old cells with new cells through a limited cell division.

On the other hand, cancer cells can multiply definitely.

In cancer, antiproliferation is a process in which the cancer cells are killed or limited to grow through many mechanisms, including the use of chemo drugs.

In the immune perspective, anti-proliferation can be carried out by activating the genes associated with cancer suppression, programming cell death,.... and cell cycle arrest.

A suppressive gene, such as pro-apoptotic p53 induces cancer cell death through cell cycle arrest. In other words, the gene inhibits tumor growth by interrupting the cancer cell cycle division.

In the programmed cell death gene, such as BCL-2 induce cell death by either inducing or inhibiting apoptosis. In other words, If cells are no longer needed or damaged, activating an intracellular death program will cause cell death.

In the phytochemicals perspective, anti-proliferation can also be carried out by antioxidants in which they stimulate the free radicals overexpression to induce toxicity to tumor cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Some cancers can stimulate the production of a new blood vessel for cancer cells to grow and others can make enzymes that break down normal cells and tissues as they grow.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists compare five different common South European species of Taraxacum (T. obovatum (Willd.) DC., T. marginellum H. Lindb., T. hispanicum H. Lindb., T. lambinonii Soest and T. lacistrum Sahlin) antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity.

According to the dissimilarities between species in LC/MS patterns, T. marginellum demonstrated a strong intracellular antioxidant activity and the cytotoxicity by reducing the expression of ROS.

Compared to the other 3 species, T. marginellum showed the most efficient against the induction of free radicals overexpression in vitro.

Furthermore, in free radical theory, compared to T. marginellum, T. obovatum was the best free radical scavenger and a relevant cytotoxic effect was found in T. lacistrum extract over HeLa and HepG2 cell lines.

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy that processes antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity, in a type-dependent manner, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
