Cruciferous Vegetables Induce the Death of Bladder Cancer Cells

The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.

Bladder cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the bladder tissue due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of primary bladder cancer start on the cell on the surface of the inner lining. However, after growing large enough, the cancerous call can spread to other regions in the body through the circulation of fluids and blood.

According to the statistic. 90% of bladder cancer were diagnosed in people who are older than 55. and the average age of people diagnosed with bladder cancer is 73.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers evaluated the diets rich in cruciferous vegetables, particularly broccoli on bladder cancer risk.

In vitro studies, isothiocyanates, the major chemical compound of cruciferous vegetables inhibited bladder cancer cell lines, induced cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis.

Furthermore, isothiocyanates demonstrated many mechanisms of anticancer activity at the steps of cancer initiation, promotion, and progression.

Moreover, isothiocyanates induced cancer cell death by targeting multiple pathways including the adaptive stress response, phase I/II enzyme modulation, pro-growth, pro-survival, pro-inflammatory signaling, angiogenesis, and even epigenetic modulation, according to multiple in vivo studies.


Collectively, researchers said, "Overall, both cell and animal studies support a potential role for isothiocyanates in bladder cancer prevention and treatment. Future studies are necessary to examine clinically relevant outcomes and define guidelines on ameliorating the bladder cancer burden".

Taken altogether, collard green consisting of isothiocyanates that may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
