Elder (Sambucus), A Natural Antioxidant Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is the test to evaluate the antioxidant response against the free radicals produced in a given disease induced by oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is a medical condition caused by the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radical and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In fact, free radicals exist everywhere including the airs we breathe, the thing we eat and the environment we contact, particularly, cell metabolism in the body.

Epidemiologically, overexpression of free radicals has been found to induce damage to the cell, lipid, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and particularly, cancer.

Other diseases such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, peripheral artery disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and obesity are also found in patients with oxidative stress.

In spite of free radicals harmful effects, one must understand that cellular oxygen species (ROS), are necessary with a moderate amount to protect our body in the mediation of antimicrobial infection, detoxification of potentially toxic compounds, and elimination.

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit free radicals.

Free radicals such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, myeloperoxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase and antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) also act on specific oxidative pathways involving both pro-oxidant and antioxidant enzymes to maintain the healthy ratio in the body.

Normally, in a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver are more than enough to counter levels of free radicals in the body. However, people with weakened immune system intake of dietary antioxidant or antioxidant supplements may be necessary.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists examined the antioxidant contents in flowers of wild specimens of European elder (Sambucus nigra L.),

Elder or Common Elder, is a shrub or small tree of the genus Sambucus of 30 species, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to the temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat constipation, colic, diarrhea, colds, flu, bronchial and upper-respiratory, irritation of the skin, rheumatism, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* Flowers of wild specimens of European elder (Sambucus nigra L.), was relatively rich in elements K, Ca, Cu, Rb, and antioxidants, without accumulating heavy metals potentially bioavailable in the soil.

* The content of Fe, Cr, and Zn in elderflowers was revealed; the metal quantities were below levels harmful to humans.

* Furthermore, flowers from the city center exhibited higher antioxidant and radical scavenging capacities compared to plants from the areas of little traffic.

* Most importantly, the antioxidant parameters were negatively correlated with the silty fraction content and positively with the potentially bioavailable levels of Ti and Mn in soils and increased with the amount of Rb in the flowers.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "...for the first time that the urban specimens of wild S. nigra can perform as a local source of beneficial flowers providing cost-effective support in disease prevention and treatment".

Taken altogether, Elder (Sambucus) with rich antioxidants and metal content may be considered an antioxidant remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
