Onion and Garlic, the Natural Anti-Endometrial Cancer Functional Foods

By Kyle J. Norton

The endometrium is the inner lining of the mammalian uterus and very susceptible hormone change, particularly to the menstrual cycle.

Endometrial cancer is a late adulthood cancer in which the cells of the endometrial lining of the uterus have growth uncontrollable or become cancerous as a result of the alternation of cells DNA.

At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Endometrial cancer has been found to metastasize to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes, vagina.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity and the use of hormone therapy are some of the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

It's the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer.

According to the statistic, the risk of endometrial cancer among women is 1 in 7000. Every year, about 40,000 women in the US are diagnosed with the disease.

Women who carry certain mutation genes, such as BRCA1 or the BRCA2 are associated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity and the use of hormone therapy are some of the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

Depending on the stage and grade of cancer, chemotherapy such as Doxorubicin, Cisplatin. Paclitaxel, Carboplatin, Topotecan may be necessary after surgery with certain side effects.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers compared the relationship between onion and garlic intake and endometrial cancer, using data from an Italian case-control study.

According to the results of validated and reproducible FFQ of the multi-center case-control study of 454 endometrial cancer cases and 908 controls, who were admitted to the same hospitals for a wide spectrum of acute, non-neoplastic conditions.

Compared with non-users, the OR of endometrial cancer for successive categories of onion intake were 0.94 (95% CI 0.72, 1.21) for <2 portions/week and 0.40 (95% CI 0.22, 0.72) for > or =2 portions/week.

In other words intake of onion showed a significant inverse trend in the risk of endometrial cancer. The OR for an increment of one portion (i.e. 80 g) of onions per week was 0.81 (95% CI 0.70, 0.95).

Furthermore, the OR of garlic for successive categories of intake were 0.89 (95% CI 0.68, 1.15) for intermediate use and 0.62 (95% CI 0.42, 0.92) for high use, with a significant inverse trend in risk (P = 0.02).

Collectively, researchers said, "Our study found a moderate protective role of allium vegetables on the risk of endometrial cancer".

Taken altogether, garlic and onion may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
