Garlic, The Best Whole Food That Gobbles Up Cancer Cells, Scientists Say

Garlic (Allium sativum) may have a potential effect in prevention and treatment of cancers by gobbling up cancer cells before they can proliferate to the invasive tumor, some studies suggested.

Cancers is a class of chronic diseases characterized by uncontrollable cells grown in tissue in the body.

At the later stage,  the cancerous cells can infect other healthy cells and tissue far away from the original site by traveling through blood and lymph.

The diseases are the second cause of death in the US.

According to statistic, between 2011-2015, by the national Cancer Institute, 440 per 100,000 adults are diagnosed with cancers, inducing 163.5 per 100,000 death

Depending on types of cancer, patients may experience certain general and specific symptoms.

DNA alternation caused by an inherited gene mutation in induction abnormal cells proliferation is the major cause of cancers.

The National Cancer Institute suggested that age, excessive alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet and lifestyle, smoking, radiation, viruses, carcinogens, obesity,... and chronic inflammation,  are also considered as some major risk factors that can cause cancers. (As these factors are accumulated through many studies in which all point to a similar association between a potential risk factor and an increased risk of cancer).

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. 

The pungent herb has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine for treating common cold and flu, blood pressure cholesterol levels,..... and as a natural antibiotic.

Garlic appears to be generally safe although some people may suffer mild allergic reactions.

A recent study lead by author Dr. Oommen S indicated that allicin, the main ingredient found in garlic induces the formation of apoptotic bodies, nuclear condensation and a typical DNA ladder in cancer cells, causing cell death.

Researchers in the study of ingredient allicin also showed that the phytochemical is capable in inducing an increase of the rate of apoptosis by obstructing the expression the cell cycle division and  pro-inflammation.

On cancer HL60 and U937 cell lines, allicin inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway by involving the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway through promoted GSH depletion and changes in the intracellular redox status.

In the research of the function of 20 compounds from garlic, researchers at the Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala, suggested that garlic Phytocompounds Possess Anticancer Activity by Specifically Targeting Breast Cancer Biomarkers.

Other compounds found in garlic such as organosulfur, its extract and phyto-compounds also suppressed cancer cells proliferation and induced cell cycle arrest.

Therefore, people who are at higher risk of the diseases may consider adding a portion of garlic whole food into their diet for preventive measure.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of garlic anti-cancer possibilities.
