Broccoli Sprout Inhibited Hepatic Abnormalities Against Liver Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

The most common types of liver disease in the US are hepatitis C (26%), alcoholic liver disease (21%), hepatitis C plus alcoholic liver disease (15%), cryptogenic causes (18%), hepatitis B and D (15%).

The most common symptoms of liver diseases are jaundice, abdominal pain and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine color, pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool, chronic fatigue and nausea or vomiting.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the US, 4.5 million adults are living with liver disease.
In other words, 1.8% of the adults in the US are diagnosed with liver diseases

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases researchers compared the effects of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract against liver abnormality.

The randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial included male participants with fatty liver received either BS capsules containing glucoraphanin [GR; a precursor of SF (n = 24)] or placebo (n = 28) for 2 months.

According to the results, compared to before and after treatment, dietary supplements BS extract containing SF precursor GR showed a significant decrease in the serum levels of liver stress markers, alanine aminotransferases ( ALT) from 54.0 (34.5-79.0) to48.5 (33.3-65.3), compared to no change in the placebo group.

The supplement also decreased the liver stress marker of alkali phosphatase compared before and after treatment from 6.66 (5.51-9.03) to 5.49 (4.89-6.66).

According to the urinary level of 8-OHdG, the oxidative stress marker was significantly reduced in participants, after the dietary supplementation.

In the rat model, researchers said, " Intake of BS extract prevented NDMA-induced chronic liver failure in rats, which was attributable to the suppression of the increase in TBARS through induction of hepatic phase 2 antioxidant enzymes".

Where thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) are formed after lipid peroxidation.

And, "Dietary supplementation with BS extract containing the SF precursor GR is likely to be highly effective in improving liver function through reduction of oxidative stress".

.
Taken altogether, broccoli sprout consists of sulforaphane may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver abnormality caused by oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
