The Effects of Herbal Angelica on Myocardial Fibrosis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Fibrosis is a medical condition caused by the excessive formation of fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue.

Myocardial fibrosis is a medical condition caused by increased myofibroblast activity and excessive extracellular matrix deposition in the heart.

Myocardial fibrosis has been found to induce heart remodeling that leads to heart failure and death.

The severity of the grades range from A0 to A3:
A0: no activity
A1: mild activity
A2: moderate activity
A3: severe activity

and

The severity of fibrosis stages range from F0 to F4:
F0: no fibrosis
F1: portal fibrosis without septa
F2: portal fibrosis with few septa
F3: numerous septa without cirrhosis
F4: cirrhosis, the most severe stage of fibrosis

The most common symptoms of are myocardial fibrosis are increased myocardial stiffness, cardiomyocyte necrosis, arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, and unfavorable prognosis.

The most common causes of myocardial fibrosis are coronary heart disease, aortic stenosis, and hypertension.

Aortic stenosis and hypertension also have been found to pressure overload of the left ventricle induced hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with fibrosis, the researchers examined the effects of Radix Angelica Sinensis and Radix Hedysari ultrafiltration extract (RAS-RH) on cardiac fibrosis induced by a single dose of total body irradiation (TBI) at 8 Gy.

Based on the analysis,
* The control hearts exhibited less collagen and fibrosis compared to (TBI) treatment rats showed the increase in the serum levels of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) involved in cytokine expression and troponin-I (TnI) associated with the inhibition of blood vessel contraction.

* RAS-RH treatment mitigated these morphological injuries.

* RAS-RH also induced the apoptosis of primary rat cardiac fibroblasts after X- irradiation.

* Genes associated with the cellular proliferation of rat cardiac fibroblasts induced by TBI were all inhibited by the injection of RAS-RH.

Collectively, researchers said, "RAS-RH may potentially be developed as a medical countermeasure for the mitigation of radiation-induced myocardial fibrosis".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica used in a combination with other herbal medicines may be considered a decoction for the prevention of myocardial fibrosis, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.
