Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Inhibits the Parameters Involved in Hepatitis B Infection

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by liver inflammation of viral Hepatitis C, leading to irreversible liver scars. Over time, the condition can also induce liver cancer.

The most common symptoms of liver disease are jaundice, abdominal pain and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine color, pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool, chronic fatigue and nausea or vomiting.

According to the statistics from the WHO, in 2015, 257 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B infection (defined as hepatitis B surface antigen-positive).

In 2015, hepatitis B resulted in an estimated 887 000 deaths, mostly from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (i.e. primary liver cancer).

The most common risk factors associated with hepatitis B infection are unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles with someone infected by the virus.

sadly, a mother with hepatitis B infection also can transmit the disease to her child.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, scientists examined the T. mongolicum extract (TME) antiviral effect against the hepatitis B virus (HBV).

According to the tested differentiation, in chemically-injured neonatal rat hepatocytes, DHBV-infected duck fetal hepatocytes and HBV-transfected HepG2.2.15 cells, TME at 50-100 µg/ml
* Inhibited the levels of  D-galactosamine (D-GalN), thioacetamide (TAA) and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP)- associated with the injured hepatocytes in rat liver, induced the protection rates of 42.2, 34.6 and 43.8% at 100 µg/ml, respectively.

* TME at 1-100 µg/ml markedly inhibited DHBV DNA replication.

* TME at 25-100 µg/ml reduced HBsAg and HBeAg levels and produced inhibition rates of 91.39 and 91.72% at 100 µg/ml, respectively.

* TME markedly inhibited HBV DNA replication at 25-100 µg/ml.

Collectively, TME inhibited the parameters associated with the initiation of hepatitis B infection involved in the amelioration of oxidative stress.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The antiviral properties of TME may contribute to blocking protein synthesis steps and DNA replication".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of hepatitis B infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
