The Anti-#BloodGlucoseImpairment Activity of #Antioxidant #SFN Found in #CruciferousVegetables, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.
In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites are clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms of shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

The most common forms of diabetes are type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

In contrast to type II diabetes, type 1 diabetes is not associated with dietary intake or an unhealthy lifestyle that can cause an increase in glucose levels in the blood.

According to Diabetes Canada, patients with type 1 diabetes should be aware of the number of insulin injections that are needed per day; the timing of insulin injections, and the dose of insulin that is needed with each injection

Impaired fasting glucose and glucose tolerance are 2 types of prediabetes,

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, researchers examined chronic sulforaphane, a potent inducer of antioxidant enzymes present in cruciferous vegetables oral treatment in blood glucose impairment.

On obesity and insulin resistance induced by a highly palatable (HP) diet in male Wistar SFN showed much-lowering glucose tolerance, compared to the HP diet groups.

Furthermore, the group treated with SFN demonstrated a lower level of liver triacylglycerols but no differences in serum lipids, and hepatic and kidney markers in both HP and SFN groups.

Moreover, SFN. also decreased the expression of GLUT3 associated with the uptake of glucose into the neuron in the cortex and hypothalamus in the HP diet group.

Collectively, researchers wrote, " SFN at the specific dose was able to accentuate glucose intolerance and may affect GLUT3 expression in the cerebral cortex and hypothalamus".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables processed with a high amount of SFN may be considered functional foods for the prevention of blood glucose impairment, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
