#Herbal #Andrographis in the Promotion of Anti #NonSmallCellLungCancer #NSCLC Activites, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Andrographis may be used as a possible therapeutic herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of Lung cancer, a Taiwan study suggested.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. Most common forms of primary lung cancers are derived from epithelial cells. In the US, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths of 158,683 people, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to the 2007 statistic.

According to the National Chung Hsing University, andrographolide, one of the major diterpene lactones found in Andrographis paniculata exhibited anti pulmonary cancer effects in a lung tumor mouse.

Dr. Tung YT, the lead author of the study said, "Andrographolide treatment on the overexpression of VEGF can arrest the cell cycle, which induced pulmonary tumors in transgenic mice".

In non-small-cell lung cancer, intake of andrographolide significantly enhanced the function of HLJ1, a novel tumor suppressor in used as a druggable target for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Furthermore, andrographolide also affected the genes expression involved in the cell cycle, apoptosis and adhesion-related biological signaling, leading to inhibition of the development and progression of non-small cell lung cancer.

Other study insisted that the inhibition of andrographolide on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cell migration and invasion is also attributed to other mechanisms beside gene expression, such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway in regulating the cell cycle, VEGF pathway in regulating of tumor angiogenesis,, etc.

There is no doubt that andrographolide may be a promising new anticancer agent used in suppressed tumor growth and invasion in NSCLC, but more studies are necessary to confirm the validation.
