#Herbal #Garlic Reduces the Risk and Treatment of Gastric Cancer Potentially, Researchers Suggest

Scientists from various respectable institutions suggested that out of many herbs, garlic may be one of the most powerful whole-food medicine in reducing the risk of gastric cancer due to the effects of phytochemicals.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

Stomach or Gastric cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

Diallyl disulfide(DADS), an antioxidant found in garlic inhibited the proliferation of several tumor cells by interfering in cell cycle arrest. Administrated garlic induced the reduction of 23% of the live gastric adenocarcinoma cell line(AGS) in the G(2)-M phase, after 400 µM DADS treatment for 48 hours.

Dr. Wang X, the lead author in the animal study said,"... Aged black garlic extract induces inhibition of gastric cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo, may be partly due to its antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects"

In fact, the effectiveness of garlic in reduced risk and treatment of gastric cancer probably is due to its antioxidants, such as Diallyl disulfide(DADS) and extract in inhibition of cancer cells through the influence of cell cycle division and negation of proinflammatory pathways.

Some researchers suggested using garlic as chemopreventive therapy, as the experiment showed that garlic scavenges free radicals, and inhibits cell proliferation of tumor growth.

Therefore, people who add an additional portion of garlic into their diet may see the risk of gastric cancer development reduced substantially.
