By Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is a common skin condition caused by speeding up the life cycle of skin cells, leading to death skin built-up on the surface of the affected area.

The most common symptoms of psoriasis are the formation of scales and red patches inducing pain and itchiness.

In severe cases, the disease can also cause symptoms of dry, cracked skin, thickened, pitted or ridged nails and swollen and stiff joints, depending on the speed of the skin cell life cycle.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have psoriasis, please check with your doctor.

The most common risk factors associated with psoriasis are family history, long-term stress, skin injury, medication, bacterial and viral infection, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking.

Dr. F Prignano, the lead scientist in the evaluated the itch in psoriasis: epidemiology, clinical aspects, and treatment options wrote, "Almost 85% of psoriatic patients suffered from itching; the frequency of pruritus was daily and mean intensity by VAS scale was moderate. The presence and intensity of pruritus and body mass index (BMI) were correlated. 40% of patients with pruritus were overweight (BMI > 25 < 30) and 10% obese (BMI > 30)".

And, "Emollients, topical steroids, and calcipotriol cream could relieve pruritus but their effect was temporary. Among the antipsoriatic therapies, phototherapy with narrowband ultraviolet B (nb-UVB) was the most effective treatment in reducing pruritus. Biological therapies, mainly etanercept and efalizumab, proved useful in its control".

In other words, if you are obese, your risk of psoriasis increase substantially compared to those who are not.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of psoriasis, researchers evaluated the effect of turmeric used as immune modulation and anti-inflammatory therapy on scalp psoriasis.

The study included 40 patients with mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated into two groups with the case group received turmeric tonic twice a day compared to placebo applied in the same manner.for 9 weeks.

According to the evaluation at the baseline, weeks 3, 6, and 9, compared to the placebo, turmeric tonic significantly reduced the erythema, scaling, and induration of lesions (PASI score), and also improved the patients' quality of life.

In other words, turmeric inhibited the symptoms and the progression of psoriasis without inducing any side effects in participants.

Most patients at the end of the experiment expressed satisfaction of the clinical effects of turmeric tonic on scalp psoriasis.

Based on the findings, Dr. Bahraini P, the lead scientist wrote, "This formulation could be considered as a treatment for scalp psoriasis".

Furthermore, the Islamic Azad University, in the evaluation of Curcuma longa effect against several inflammatory enzymes mainly involved in the inflammatory process of psoriasis, conducted a randomized, prospective intra-individual, right-left comparative, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial in 34 patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis found that turmeric showed an improvement of the clinical and quality of life parameters in treated patients compared to untreated control.

Researchers, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Based on our findings, the proposed microemulgel may well be considered as an alternative in some patients and most likely as an add-on therapeutic option for many patients suffering from plaque psoriasis".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of psoriasis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
