Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of the specific organ.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of organs before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor.

At the advanced stage, most cancers can travel through blood and fluid circulation to infect other healthy tissue and organ a distance away from the original site.

Leukemia is a medical condition caused by the abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system.

Depending to the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including spine, pelvis, underarm, and leg.

According to the statistics, approximately 176,200 people in the US will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2019, accounting for 10% of all new cases of cancer diagnosed in the US.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), type of leukemia associated with a condition of slow growth and spreading of a group of abnormal white blood cells called B-cell lymphocytes, which fight against infection in our body by produced antibodies.

In CLL, B-cell lymphocytes have become abnormal and grow out of control. They appear less immature in the bloodstream.

Besides the general symptoms shared by all types of leukemia, the most common specific symptoms of CLL are
*Abnormal bruising
It is normally occurred in the later stage of CLL due to immature white blood cells that affect the levels of platelets.

*Enlarged lymph nodes, spleen
In CLL, lymph nodes can swell more than 1cm in children and 2 cm in adult.

* Become too full easily
One of the specific symptoms of CLL due to enlarged lymph nodes or spleen pressing onto the abdomen.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of leukemia, researchers examined the effect of turmeric and the green tea extract epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) effects on the apoptotic machinery in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

According to the tested assays, curcumin induced B-CLL cells apoptosis is associated with a dose-dependent.

Curcumin was more sensitive to its cytotoxic effects than B-CLL cells compared to normal B lymphocytes.

Furthermore, curcumin inhibited the protein (PARP) from doing its repair work in cancer cells and the cell dies in B-CLL cells by activating the programmed cell death gene.

Moreover, curcumin-induced B-CLL cells apoptosis also by the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondrial membrane.

Additionally, the inhibition of B-CLL cells of curcumin was also found in the inhibition of the activation of pro-survival pathways, including STAT3, Akt, and NF-κB.

Interestingly, Co-culture of B-CLL cells with stromal cells, curcumin-induced apoptosis at lower curcumin doses, but not at higher doses (20μM) ().

Based on these findings, researchers strongly believed that curcumin alone may be a less effective treatment for B-CLL due to incomplete apoptotic responses.

In other words, curcumin enhanced the effectiveness of a variety of compounds for the treatment of B-CLL.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin combined with conventional medicine or other phytochemicals for the prevention and treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
