Chinese Sauerkraut, the Anti Hyperuricemia Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperuricemia is a condition of an excess of uric acid in the blood caused by reduced renal function.

The most common causes of hyperuricemia are genetics, insulin resistance, hypertension, hypothyroidism, obesity, diet, medications such as diuretics, and consumption of excess alcoholic beverages.

Gout mostly effected one joint is an acute and recurrent condition of arthritis as a result of uric acid building up in the blood, inducing joint inflammation.

The causes of gout are the result of high levels of uric acid in the body that can lead to the forming of crystals causes of inflammation due to your body can not get rid of uric acid or have made too much uric acid.

Reduced intake of meats and seafood and foods containing higher levels of uric acid, such as alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose) in patients with gout may be necessary.

According to the New York University School of Medicine/Langone Medical Center, the prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia has increased dramatically during the last several decades, to the point that gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis in the United States, affecting approximately 8 million Americans and contributing to great numbers of hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease.

The most common medication for the treatment of gout is Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) by reducing pain and inflammation during an attack.

Chinese sauerkraut is a traditional Chinese pickled Chinese cabbage.

Depending on the regions, in Northern China,  Napa cabbages were traditional vegetables of choice to make Chinese sauerkraut.

In Southern China,  thick stalk varieties of Chinese mustard are preferred.

On finding the potential compound for the prevention and treatment of gout, researchers led by the Dalian Medical University investigated fifty-five lactic acid bacteria isolated from Chinese sauerkraut which have the ability to degrade inosine and guanosine, the two key intermediates in purine metabolism.

According to tested analysis, the strains DM9218 showed the best probiotic potential compared with other strains despite its poor bile resistance compared to strain DM9218-A which showed better resistance to 0.3% bile salt.

DM9218 has the highest probiotic activity similarity (99%) to those of Lactobacillus Plantarum WCFS1.

Furthermore, the strain DM9218-A showed a significant effect to inhibit the level of serum uric acid in the hyperuricemic rat.

Moreover, DM9218-A in The preventive treatment caused a greater reduction in serum uric acid concentration in hyperuricemic rats than the later treatment.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "DM9218-A may be a promising candidate as an adjunctive treatment in patients with hyperuricemia during the onset period of the disease. DM9218-A also has potential as a probiotic in the prevention of hyperuricemia in the normal population".

Taken altogether, Chinese sauerkraut processed a high amount of DM9218-A may be used as probiotics for the prevention and treatment of gout, pending to large sample size and multicenter study.
