Cranberry Promotes the Cardio-Metabolic Health

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiometabolic risk is a condition that estimates the possibilities of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease and diabetes mellitus.

Cardioprotection is a process including the use of substances associated with the preserve of the function and viability of cardiac muscle tissue by the reintroduction of oxygenic blood flow back to the tissues.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions caused by the underlying damage of blood vessels and the heart.

More precisely, CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack) or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption,

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in this US living with some form of cardiovascular disease. The condition has also been found to cause the death of about 2,200 people a day.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.

Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the brain, it will cause the death of the brain cells, leading to stroke.

However, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.

Most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium and other chemical substances in the artery

Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulins in the bloodstream. or insulins in the bloodstream are not used properly to convert glucose to energy.

Epidemiologically, diabetes is caused by either the beta cells in the pancreas died-off or insulin receptors with a function that use insulin to convert glucose to energy clogged-up by fat or cholesterol.

In a healthy individual, after eating, the rise of blood glucose triggers the production of insulin by the pancreas into bloodstream After you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises. This rise in glucose triggers your pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream that travels through the blood to your body's cells before converting glucose into energy or store it to use later.

In other words, insulin released by the pancreas joints with the Insulin receptors on the outer part of a cell that binds insulin in the blood to convert glucose to energy.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cardiometabolic health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function and cardiometabolic risk factors.

In cardiometabolic health, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites improved the
serum lipid profiles reduced the levels of blood pressure.

Furthermore, the endothelial functions associated with vascular relaxation and contraction, glucoregulation involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism. and a variety of biomarkers associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in the induction of CVD and diabetes were also inhibited by the cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These results warrant further research, particularly studies dedicated to the elucidation of dose-response relations, pharmacokinetic/metabolomics profiles, and relevant biomarkers of action with the use of fully characterized cranberry products.".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the cardiometabolic health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
