Herbal Aloe vera, the Anti Primary Glioblastoma Functional Remedy

Aloe vera may process a strong implication in reducing the risk of primary glioblastoma, according to studies.

Primary glioblastoma is considered the most aggressive cancer that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise de novo, meaning they begin as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

Due to the rapid growth of the tumor, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and severe headaches and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.

Radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery. 

Increased in age, and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors of the diseases. Dr. Athanassios P. Kyritsis, in the concern of the rapid progression of glioblastoma, wrote, "Scientific evidence during the last few years has revealed several constitutive genetic abnormalities that may influence glioma formation".

And, "These germline abnormalities are manifested as either gene polymorphisms or hemizygous mutations of key regulatory genes that are involved either in DNA repair or in apoptosis".

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.


The herbal plant has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.

Researchers on the finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer examined the anti-brain cancer effect of Aloe-emodin isolated from the leaves of Aloe vera in human U87 malignant glioma cells.

Injection of Aloe-emodin exerted a significant apoptotic activity and induced proliferation in a time- and dose-dependent.

The percentage of viable U87 cells was also deceased substantial via the induction of apoptosis.

The formation of apoptotic bodies was observed by the confocal microscope by Annexin V-FITC/PI staining. 

Aloe-emodin inhibits the human U87 malignant glioma cells, was attributed to the arrested the cell cycle in the S phase and promoted the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in U87 cells.

In order to reveal the inhibitory efficacy mechanisms of Aloe-emodin against human U87 malignant glioma cells, researchers at the University of South Florida, Tampa, examined the effects of the bioactive compound through the aspects of the cell cycle, cell proliferation and protein kinase C (PKC) during glioma growth and development.

In cell cycle arrest, according to the flow cytometry assay, Aloe-emodin delayed the number of cells entering and exiting DNA synthesis (S) phase in both SVG and U-373MG cells, a strong indication that Aloe-emodin may inhibit S phase progression.

In cell viability assay, SVG and U-373MG glioma cell were highly sensitive to the application of Aloe-emodin.

Furthermore, injection of Aloe-emodin-induced decreased proliferation,  sustained at 48-96 hours.

Exposure of SVG and U-373MG glioma cells to aloe-emodin suppressed PKC activity in the promotion of cancer cell proliferation by reduced the protein content of most of the PKC enzymes.

Moreover, Aloe-emodin inhibited cancer growth was also associated with the activation of a protein in programming cell death.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera processed a major bioactive compound Aloe-emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for treatment of brain cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
