Calendula, the Best Anti Cancers Herbal Remedy, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, according to the studies.

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in some specific tissues and organs due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Depending on the stage and specific types of cancer, some cancers do not cause any symptoms such as liver cancer.

However, at the later stage, the larger size of the tumor may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to localized bleeding and pain accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

At this stage, cancer cells may also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs through fields and blood circulation, leading to secondary metastasis.

There are some common factors shared by many types of cancer such as family and personal history, ethnicity and gender, some researchers found that unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major risks in the induction of the diseases.

Dr. Katzke, Verena A Ph.D., the lead scientist in the concern of lifestyle and cancer risk, wrote, "Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, diet, and physical inactivity, and also reproductive and hormonal factors are considered as causes of cancer and main targets for primary prevention".

And, " While smoking, which may be responsible for around 20% to 30% of all incident cancers, is clearly the strongest lifestyle-related risk factor overall, followed by alcohol consumption and obesity, the importance of specific factors for individual cancer types and subtypes varies greatly.".

In other words, by changing to a healthy lifestyle, the risk of cancers can be reduced substantially.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb medicine has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

Researchers on finding natural chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer investigated the cytotoxic anti-tumor and immunomodulatory activities and in vivo antitumor effect of Laser Activated Calendula Extract (LACE), a novel extract of the plant Calendula Officinalis (Asteraceae).

The tumor cell lines included in the study are derived from leukemias, melanomas, fibrosarcomas and breast, prostate, cervix, lung, pancreas and colorectal cancer.

The LACE extract showed a potent in vitro inhibition of tumor cell proliferation a wide variety of human and murine tumor cell lines, ranged from 70 to 100%.

The cancer cells inhibition was attributed to the protein associated with cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase and induced apoptosis.

Furthermore, the intraperitoneal injection or oral administration of LACE extract in nude mice inhibits in vivo tumor growth of Ando-2 melanoma cells and prolongs the survival day of the mice.

However, human peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) and NKL cell lines, lACE extract exerted an opposite effect.

These results suggested that LACE aqueous extract has 2 potential anti-tumor therapeutic effects: cytotoxic tumor cell activity and lymphocyte activation on selected cancer cell lines.

Moreover, in male mice injected with B16F-10 melanoma cells through the tail vein and simultaneously treated with C.officinalis flower extract. researcher showed that
* Simultaneous administration of C. officinalis extract to tumor-bearing C57BL/6 mice reduced the lung tumor nodules by 74% with 43.3% increase in lifespan

* Elevated levels of inflammatory expression including the proinflammatory cytokines were found to be significantly lowered in the C. officinalis treated animals.

* The extract also inhibited expression of the matrix and enzymes associated with cancer proliferation and activated the family protein associated with the modulation of cancer cell transcriptional profile.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a safe functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of cancers with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
