Whole Food Ginger, the Best for the Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, with no side effects, according to study.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder caused by the relaxation of the low end of the esophageal sphincter muscle which connects with the stomach at the wrong times, leading to return of the stomach's contents back up into the esophagus.

Under normal digestion, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) closed after opening to allow food to pass into the stomach.

People with GERD may have symptoms of heartburn, a burning sensation in your chest usually after eating, chest pain, regurgitation of food or acid liquid.

In serious cases, patients may experience symptoms of difficulty swallowing.

Most cases of GERD symptoms can be managed by lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. However, some people may need surgery to ease symptoms.

Unmanaged GERD has been found to damage the esophageal tissue and dysfunctional valve at the top of the stomach and bottom of the esophagus in some patients.

The exact causes of GERD are unidentified. Being overweight and obesity, intake of certain medications, being a smoker and exposed to second-hand smoke are some factors associated with the prevalent risk of the condition.

Out of many risk factors, some researchers suggested aging may be a common risk of GERD in the elderly.

Dr. David A. Johnson, said, "The prevalence of erosive esophagitis and other complications of gastroesophageal reflux disease increase with age. Additionally, among all people with GERD, older adults are more likely to suffer severe complications, such as Barrett esophagus and esophageal carcinoma, than are younger people".

And, "Older age was associated independently with increasing acid exposure (P<0.0001), decreases in intra-abdominal LES length (P<0.001), increases in esophageal dysmotility, and increasingly ineffective peristalsis".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and bile reflux gastritis (BRG) which are common gastrointestinal (GI) disorders with unmet medical needs, researchers evaluated the ginger-containing formula Wendan decoction (WDD) targets homeostatic disturbances.

The Wendan decoction (WDD) has been used for thousands of year in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of syndromes characterized by "reflux" and "gut-juice exposure" problems.

After reviewing medical data online, 33 studies involved 3253 participants (1351 vs. 1035 of the BRG in 20 publications, 449 vs. 418 of the GERD in 13 studies, and 194 vs. 159 of relapse rate in 6 trials) was selected.

According to the pooled data, application of WDD showed a consistent therapeutic efficacy on BRG (OR = 6.00, 95%C = 4.68-7.69) and GERD (OR = 4.39, 95%CI = 2.72-7.07).

The relapse rate was 12.4% for WDD which significantly lower than 44.0% in the conventional therapies (OR = 0.14, 95%CI = 0.08-0.26).

After taking into account co and confounders, researchers wrote on the final report, "The consistent therapeutic efficacy of the single TCM formula on GERD and BRD indirectly indicates reflux as common pathogenesis in reflux-associated GI disorders".

Take all together, ginger used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered the functional alternatives for the treatment of GERD and BRD, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Heart Against Cardiac Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiac toxicity is a condition in which the heart has been damage to some extents caused by harmful chemicals, including toxins induced by the treatment of chemotherapy.

Depending on the cells of the areas of the heart  that have been damaged, cardiac toxicity includes

* Cardiomyopathy is a disorder caused a weaken or damage of heart muscle, affecting the heart rhythm or inducing the risk of heart failure.

* Myocarditis is a condition of inflammation of the heart, that can lead to changes in heart rhythm or heart failure.

* Pericarditis is a condition caused by the inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, inducing chest pain or heart failure.

* Acute coronary syndromes that affect the blood flow due to blood vessel damage.

* Congestive heart failure is a result that affects the function of the heart in pumping blood throughout the body.

Conventionally, treatment of cardiac toxicity include medication to control fluids, high blood pressure, and medications which improve the hear functioning. If all aforementioned medications fail, a heart transplant may be necessary.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of cardiac toxicity scientists launched an investigation to determine whether curry intake reduces blood levels of heavy metals, according to the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013 data.

1,350 participants selected to the study were randomly divided into either curry intake group with the consumption of a curry dish more than once a month over the previous year, or a non-curry intake group (n = 747).

According to the heavy metal analysis, the curry intake group showed significantly lower heavy metal blood concentrations (Pb, Hg, and Cd).

Furthermore, the levels of heavy metals in patients with hypertension (HTN) were significantly lower in curry intake group compared to the nonhypertension group.

The levels of blood concentrations of heavy metals induced toxicity associated with the induction of hypertension were significantly lower compared to the placebo.

The results confirmed the correlation between blood heavy metal levels and HTN.

In other words, turmeric has a potential effect on reducing cardiac toxicity in the induction of abnormally blood pressure.

In order to obtain turmeric detoxed activity, researchers examined the protective effect of turmeric extract against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiac toxicity in rats.

According to the tested assays, turmeric extract exerted multiple therapeutic activities that ameliorate the effect of DOX-induced cardiac toxicity.

Additionally, turmeric extract inhibited the DOX-induced increase in plasma cholesterol, LDH, associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Mohamad RH, the lead scientist said, "The present findings conclude that the turmeric extract has multiple therapeutic activities that block the cardiac,.....toxicities".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of cardiac toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Suppresses the Onset of Hypercholesterolemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypercholesterolemia is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high blood cholesterol in the blood

In other words, hypercholesterolemia is a result of overexpression of low-density lipoprotein compared low levels of high-density lipoprotein.

Low-density cholesterol also is known as bad cholesterol produced by the liver or dietary saturated and trans fat in moderate amount plays  a critical role in building a strong cell wall, production of steroid hormones and vitamin D and aiding the gastrointestinal tract in the absorption of nutrients.

However, high levels of bad cholesterol have been found to induce hypercholesterolemia, a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.

High-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol, on the other hand, returns the amount of excess cholesterol back to the liver for future use.

High-density lipoprotein is also produced by the liver and dietary sources found mostly in nut and fish.
The healthy ratio of LDL/HDL is any numbers less than 4.

Although there are many risk factors that cause the onset of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested the introduction of a high-fat diet in North American over the past few decades may accelerate the rise of the condition.

Dr. Cole TG, the lead scientist, in a randomized controlled parallel-designed intervention study to evaluate the effects of a diet with less than 20 g carbohydrates per day (LCHF) on plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in young and healthy adults wrote, "There was a significant increase in apolipoprotein B, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, free fatty acids, uric acid and urea in the LCHF group versus controls".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, researchers investigated
the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) on the serum cholesterol, triglyceride in rats fed with a high cholesterol diet.

Rats selected to the study were randomly dived into experimental rats fed with a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without garlic powder for 6 weeks and control rats fed with normal diet daily.

High cholesterol-fed animals had a significant increase in serum cholesterol compared to the control group of rats fed on a normal diet.

However, in the rat group fed with a high cholesterol diet mixed with garlic powder, researchers found that there was a significant reduction in their serum cholesterol levels compared to other groups.

Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) also lowered the serum triglyceride levels compared to control and high cholesterol diet group rats without affecting the serum glucose and protein.

The finding clearly suggested that Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) is beneficial in reducing blood cholesterol, triglycerides levels in hypercholesterolemic rats.

In order to reveal more information about alliin anti-high blood cholesterol activity, researchers evaluated the capacity of Allium ursinum (wild garlic) leaf lyophilisate (WGLL; alliin content: 0.261%) to mitigate cardiovascular damage in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

The selected New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups: (i) cholesterol-free rabbit chow (control); (ii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol (hypercholesterolemic, HC); (iii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol + 2% WGLL (hypercholesterolemic treated, HCT); for eight weeks.

During the study, WGLLtreated group showed a decrease in aortic atherosclerotic plaque coverage, plasma ApoB, a protein in atherogenic lipoprotein particles associated heart disease associated with reduced blood cholesterol.

Furthermore, the activity of LDH and CK (creatine kinase) in plasma is also found to lower compared to other treatment groups.

The plasma LDL was also significantly reduced in WGLL-treated group.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betanin Protects your Liver Against Liver Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Liver toxicity is a condition that the liver was damaged due to an overdose of medicine or harmful substances.

In the US, the most common causes of liver toxicity are the results of the most common drug-induced liver injury including overdoses of acetaminophen.

Believe it or not, antibiotics are the class of drugs most commonly causing liver toxicity.

The liver is the largest internal organ that processes the function to filter out blood from the digestive tract before passing them to other parts of the body. Furthermore, the liver also produces cholesterol in a moderate amount which aids the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and builds a strong cell wall and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

However, overexpression in most cases caused over injection of fat from the dietary source can lead plaques accumulated on the wall of the artery, leading to increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Liver damage can be hepatocellular caused by direct hepatotoxicity, or innate and adaptive immune responses, and cholestatic caused most commonly by the drug or the drug metabolite, or mixed.

Liver damage can lead to reduced function of liver hepatobiliary transporter systems that affects the bile formation and secretion of cholephilic substances and xenobiotics.

Acute liver toxicity can be cured if the cause is found. However, damage to the liver in some cases can be permanent, inducing the formation of irreversible scarring of liver tissue.

Most common symptoms of liver toxicity are jaundice, persistent itching, and abdominal pain.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen fatigue, loss of appetite accompanied by gastrointestinal discomforts.

If you have some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Betanin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the protective effect of betanin (from natural pigments) against paraquat-induced liver injury in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Selected rats induced liver toxicity intraperitoneally, were randomly divided into four groups: a control group, a paraquat group, and two groups that received betanin at doses of 25 and 100mg/kg/day three days before and two days after they were administered paraquat.

Rats injected with paraquat showed a significant liver injury observed by the elevated levels of liver oxidative stress markers including serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels.

Furthermore tested rats also led to oxidative stress, liver toxicity observed by the increase levels of increase of cytochrome P450 3A2 mRNA expression and histological changes of mitochondria, including mitochondrial damage, indicated by mitochondrial membrane swelling.

Moreover, the levels of a protein associated liver cell death also increased compared to the reduced mitochondrial cytochrome C due to cytochrome c release.

Administration of betanin inhibited the pathological damage and all of the above-mentioned markers.

In other words, paraquat rats treated with betanin showed lesser pathological damage compared to those of the untreated groups.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " Betanin had a protective effect against paraquat-induced liver damage in rats".

In order to reveal additional information about betanin anti-liver toxicity, scientists assessed whether betanin (a natural pigment) is able to mitigate some OPs-induced hepatotoxicity in primary rat hepatocytes.

According to the tested assays from observation of mitochondrial depolarization as toxicity markers., administration of betanin (25μM) in tested rats significantly increased cell viability, inhibited the ROS formation and LPO, restored the levels of the cellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH) produced by the host.

Furthermore, followed by the treatment of chlorpyrifos (CPF) (300μM), diazinon (DZN) (600μM) and dichlrovos (DDVP) (400μM) treatment, betanin exerted strongly mitochondrial protection against liver toxicity.

Collectively, Dr. Ahmadian E, the lead scientist said, "potential protective role of betanin in OPs-induced hepatotoxicity in which the mechanism appears to be inhibition of ROS formation and mitochondrial protection".

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver toxicity, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turmeric's Bioactive Compound Curcumin Protects Diabetics Against Diabetic cardiomyopathy

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication found in patients with diabetes associated with reducing the heart function in circulating blood through the body, leading to heart failure and increased the accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is classified into different types, depending on the damage that has been affected, including
* Microangiopathy is a disorder that affects small blood vessels, leading to impaired myocardial blood flow reserve.
* Autonomic neuropathy is a disorder that affects the nerves that manage everyday body functions, leading to abnormal blood pressure, heart rate.

* Endothelial dysfunction is a disorder associated with the damage of vascular endothelium. The condition is considered an early event of cardiovascular disease.

Most common causes of diabetic cardiomyopathy are myocardial dysfunction in the absence of overt clinical coronary artery disease, valvular disease, and other conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia.

At the early stage, most patients with diabetic cardiomyopathy are asymptomatic. However,  mild left ventricular diastolic dysfunction with little effect on ventricular filling and concomitant hypertension or coronary artery disease has been found to be the early indication of diabetic cardiomyopathy in patients with diabetes.

Epidemiologically, the most common risk factors that increase the risk of diabetic cardiomyopathy. are insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperglycemia.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no effective treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Medication used for the treatment of the condition is focusing on glycemic control and management of heart failure symptoms.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy(DCM), researchers examined the effect of curcumin on modulating DCM and the mechanisms involved.

The study included experimental diabetic rat model induced by a low dose of streptozotocin(STZ) combined with high energy intake on rats, followed by curcumin orally administrated at a dose of 100 or 200 mg · kg(-1) · d(-1), respectively.

Before treatment of curcumin, induced DCM rats showed a declined systolic myocardial performance associated with myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis accompanied by the metabolism abnormalities, aberrant myocardial enzymes, and increased AGEs (advanced glycation end products) accumulation.

Increased levels of ROS and depletion of antioxidant enzymes were also found in the rat before pretreatment with curcumin, observed by increased oxidative stress markers.

Futhermore, levels of pro-apoptotic proteins and proinflammatory cytokines were also found to significantly increase in DCM rats.

After injection of curcumin, researchers found that remarkably, the bioactive compound attenuated myocardial dysfunction, cardiac fibrosis, AGEs accumulation, oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis in the heart of diabetic rats.

In other words, curcumin protected the heart of DCM rats against the onset of diabetic cardiomyopathy(DCM).

Based on the results, researchers said, "these results suggest that curcumin may have great therapeutic potential in the treatment of DCM, and perhaps other cardiovascular disorders, by attenuating fibrosis, oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell death".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
