Omega -3 Fatty Acids, the Anti Hyperlipidemic Supplements

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

The healthy ratio of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is ant numbers that are less than 4.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. However, if untreated, the condition can cause cholesterol build-up on the arterial wall, leading to narrowing the arteries inducing blockage that causes heart disease and stroke.

The most common inherited form of high blood cholesterol is called familial hypercholesterolemia found in 1/500 people.

By adopting a healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise, you may do just fine without medication.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids against hyperlipidemia.

Based on the results of the experiment,
* Consumption of 1.5-2.0 g/day of phytosterols result in a 10-15% reduction in LDL cholesterol in a 3-week period in hyperlipidemic populations.

* Furthermore, phytosterol consumption enhanced health benefits in people who are already on lipid-lowering medications (statin drugs).

* Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation showed significant hypotriglyceridemic effects with concurrent modifications of other risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, including platelet function and pro-inflammatory mediators.

In other words, a combination of phytosterols and omega-3 fatty acids inhibited hyperlipidemic activity that reduces cardiovascular risk in a complementary and synergistic way.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " ...the health benefits of phytosterols and omega-3 fatty acids, alone or in combination with statins, for the treatment/management of hyperlipidemia".

And " A lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is more desirable in reducing the risk of many of the chronic diseases of high prevalence in Western societies, as well as in the developing countries".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids together with low levels of omega-6 fatty acid may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
