Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Inhibits the Cervical Cancer Risk in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens at the top of the vagina. The cervix acts as a transition area for vaginal lining (squamous epithelium) to the uterus type (columnar epithelium) which hosts the development of the fetus.

Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri or cervical area caused by abnormal cells growth with alternation of cell DNA.

Precervical cancer is the early stage of abnormal cell changes in the cervical tissues, if left untreated, it can develop into true invasive cervical cancer.

A vaccine, Gardasil used to prevent pre-cervical cancer from the infection of two types of HPV was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006. It is for your benefit to take this vaccine if you are sexually active with several partners.

Researchers do not know what causes cervical cancer. Neither they can explain that women with the same health condition, family history, some are susceptible to the disease while others do not.

Most cases of cervical cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the cervix. At this stage, most women with cervical cancer do not experience any symptoms.

At the advanced stage, invasive cancer can induce symptoms of abnormal bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, increased vaginal discharge. If the tumor has suppressed the nearby nerve cells, cervical cancer can also cause localized severe pain.

According to the American Cancer Society's, in 2014, 12,360 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed with the death of 4,020 patients.

The 5-year survival rate for women with invasive cervical cancer is 92%. and approximately, 46% of women with cervical cancer are diagnosed at an early stage.

Epidemiological also suggested that HPV infection, sexual activity, smoking, giving birth many times. Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and long-term use of oral contraceptives are some prevalent risk factors of cervical cancer.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of malignant tumors, researchers examined the latex of fig fruit (Ficus carica) on cervical cancer cell lines CaSki and HeLa positive for HPV type 16 and 18, caused by high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs).

Based on the experimental results, fig latex inhibits the rapid growth and invasion properties that cause HPV-positive cervical cancer bt alternating the cell DNA.

Furthermore, fig latex also inhibited the substantially downregulated the expression of p16, a tumors suppressor and HPV oncoproteins E6, E7 associated with the turnover of tumors suppressive genes in the tested cell line.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Ficus carica latex has the potential to be used in the development of therapeutic modalities for the possible treatment, cure, and prevention of HPV related cervical cancer".

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
