Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale), the Antimicrobial Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Microorganisms, or microbes, are a class of microscopic organisms, including the single-celled form.
Microbial infection is a disease caused by microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites.

Antimicrobial activity is an action that kills microorganisms or stops their growth. In humans, these actions are carried out daily by the immune system.

Infection is a processive condition caused by the battle of the invasion of microorganisms and the host immune white blood cells. Microorganism during the battle might produce toxins which can lead to the initiation of infection-related transmissible disease or communicable disease.

In acute infections, the systematic immune system responds properly to the invasive pathogen, leading to a brief battle after which the immune system is always victorious.

However, chronic infections occur when the immune cannot kill off the invasive stimuli in the acute phase of infection, leading to chronic infectious diseases.

Microbial infection includes 4 different stages
* Stage 1 or incubation stage
In stage 1, harmful microorganisms after successfully entering the host start to incubate on the specific site by the multiplying organism to reach a population, leading to an early stage of symptoms.

* Stage 2 or prodromal stage
After successfully multiplying, the organisms start to show symptoms of illness, depending on the location of the infection.

* Stage 3 or acute stage
The numbers of microorganisms have grown exponentially, leading to very pronounced symptoms, also depending on the location and organ being infected.

* Stage 4 or convalescence stage is the recovery stage. The microorganism starts to decrease or are wiped out from the host.

Most cases of recovery infection are the result of the use of antibiotics. The length of the 4 stages of microbial infection can be vary depending on the host immune system.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the antimicrobial effects of crude and dialyzed extracts from the dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains.

According to the tested differentiation,
* The methanol hydrophobic crude extract (DRE3) demonstrated the strongest inhibition of microbial growth against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus and Bacillus cereus strains.
* Normal phase (NP) fractionation of DRE3 (NPF4 and NPF5) enhanced antimicrobial activity.

* Furthermore, further NP fractionation of NPF4 resulted in two fractions (NPF403 and NPF406) with increased antimicrobial activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the antimicrobial efficacy of dandelion root extracts demonstrated in this study support the use of the dandelion root as a source of natural antimicrobial compounds".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
