#Onion Promotes Antiproliferative and Anti-Inflammatory Effects. Against the Risk of #Endometriosis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Endometriosis is a medical condition characterized by the growth of endometrial cells somewhere else in the body instead of the inside of the uterus.
More precisely, during the maturation, the layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is normally expelled, and some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere else in the body.

Most common endometriosis tissues are diagnosed within the pelvic region, on the lining of the peritoneum, in the ovaries, and on the surface of the uterus's outside wall. However, endometriosis has also been found in the fallopian tubes, the cervix, the vagina, and even the vulva.

According to the statistics, 20% of reproductive-age women with endometriosis present without symptoms, and 55% of women have developed the new onset of severe menstrual cramps.

Additionally, endometriosis also induces sub-fertility (less fertile than a normal couple) in 25% of women.

Conventionally, endometriosis is treated either by medications or surgery, including
* Medication for pain with an aim to ease painful menstrual cramps.

* Hormone therapy may be accompanied by pain medication also with an aim to reduce menstrual pain such as hormonal contraceptives. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) agonists and antagonists, Progestin therapy. and aromatase inhibitors.

In a surgery perspective,
* In women who want to get pregnant, surgery removes the endometriosis implants while preserving the uterus and ovaries.

* Hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries may be performed if pregnancy is not a concern.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a closely related of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of endometriosis, researchers examined the effects of quercetin (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone), a major dietary flavonol found in the onion on the risk of endometriosis.

In human endometriosis cell lines (VK2/E6E7 and End1/E6E7 cells),
* Quercetin inhibited the proliferation and induced the cell cycle arrest.

* Administration of quercetin not only induced cell apoptosis with DNA fragmentation, and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential but also exhibited cytotoxicity of reactive oxygen species production in the tested cell lines.

* Quercetin also suppressed the expression of signaling pathways associated with endometrial cell survival and growth.

On endometriosis auto-implanted mouse models,

* Administration of quercetin also promoted the antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory effects.

* Quercetin injection also attenuated the proliferation with sub-G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and increased the apoptosis of VK2/E6E7 and End1/E6E7 cells by inhibiting the gene associated with the onset and progression of endometriosis.

In other words, quercetin inhibited the risk and onset of endometriosis by the increased expression and decrease expression of Micro RNA (miRNA) involved in the initiation and progression of endometriosis in vitro and vivo.

Dr. Park S, the lead scientist said, "Hence, quercetin may potentially act as a natural therapy to reduce and treat human endometriosis".

Taken together, onion processed with an abundantly high amount of quercetin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver alcoholic cytotoxicity pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
