#Honey Enhances the Immune Function in Speeding Up Wound Healing, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a strong effect in speeding up wound healing, some scientists suggested.
Wound healing is the natural process of covering up the damage and injury of the body,

The process involves 4 phases
* The first phase of wound healing is to cover up the wound. In this phase, the immune first line of defense white blood cells stimulates the emergency repair system in the production of blood clotting to block drainage.

* In phase 2, the white blood cells activate the proteins associated with the inflammatory cytokines to destroy the pathogens before they can enter the body through the wound.

* In phase 3, new blood vessels and tissues are formed in the damage and injury area.

* The recovery phase.

However, the healing process is easier said than done, the complex process in many cases are interrupted by local and systemic factors, including moisture, infection, age, and nutritional status.

Some researchers also indicated that in phase 2, due to overexpression of inflammatory cytokine, some patients may experience symptoms of localized redness, swelling, and fever.

And, the overexpression of inflammatory cytokines can also cause damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to improper healing with the formation of large and irreversible scars.

However, people with a weakened immune system may compromise acute wound repair that promotes nonhealing wounds.

Dr. Amanda S. MacLeod, the lead author in the concerns of the immune responses to acute and chronic wounds said, "The innate immune system comprises a network of interacting mechanisms that provide a rapid response to clear microbial contamination upon skin injury" and "In the development of chronic wounds, this process stalls in the late inflammatory stage. The major defect in nonhealing wounds occurs at the phenotypic switch from inflammatory macrophages to an anti-inflammatory phenotype".

These results clearly, suggested, that the failure to switch from the phase of proinflammatory cytokines to the phase of anti-inflammatory cytokines due to the weakened immune system in the activation of p38, can lead to delayed wound healing and abnormalities in chronic wounds.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In the traditional use of honey for wound healing and an alternative natural antibiotic due to the advent of antibiotic resistance in microbial pathogens, researchers reviewed articles outlined in publications regarding honey and wound healing that were published between June 2010 and August 2016.
The findings suggested that multiple types of honey demonstrate their mechanisms of action as antimicrobial agents, immunologic modulators, and physiologic mediators.

In the evaluation to examine the healing effects of honey dressings compared to silver dressings for acute or chronic wounds, researchers launched a systematic review with meta-analysis consisting of six randomized controlled trial studies.

All studies showed that honey was more efficacious for wound healing than silver, as measured in the number of days needed for wounds to heal.

Honey turned out to have more antibacterial qualities than silver in-depth analysis.

Dr. Lindberg T, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, said, "All the included studies based on burns showed the unequivocal result that honey had an even more positive effect than silver on wound healing".

The results pointed out that honey may have a potential effect in speeding up wound healing and protecting the wound against microorganism infection.
