Healthy Food Broccoli Improves the Chemotherapeutic Drug Efficacy for the Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth that starts in the tissue of specific organs.

Over time, after penetrating into deeper layers of the affected organs, the oversize tumor can sometimes spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Head and neck cancer is a class of cancer including the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

The most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.

Most cases of head and neck cancer start in the cell of the inner lining of the affected tissue. However, at the later stage, the cancer cell can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

The exact causes of head and neck cancer are unknown. However, certain risk factors have been found to associate with the onset of the disease, including, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, infection by the HPV virus, poor oral health, race, and long-term exposure to wood dust.

Some researchers suggested that people who perform oral sex before sexual intercourse is at a higher incidence of disease development as human papillomavirus (HPV) can spread during oral sex, increasing the possibility of oral cancer.

Other risk factors such as prolonged sun exposure, infection by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), poor oral and dental hygiene and occupational inhalants, long-term marijuana, tobacco use, and involuntary smoking are also associated with the onset of head and neck cancer.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential whole for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane (SFN) isolated from broccoli extract in the improvement of chemotherapeutic drug efficacy in the treatment of head and neck cancer.

According to the results of differentiation, SF improved the chemotherapeutic efficacies used in the combination with much lower doses of CIS or 5-FU against SCCHN cells, by reducing cytotoxicity to normal cells.

On SCCHN human cell lines (SCC12 and SCC38), titrations of SF standalone or in combination with CIS and 5-FU
* SF treatment alone reduced the SCCHN cell viability in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

* SF-combined treatment not only increased the cytotoxic activity of CIS by two folds and of 5-FU by tenfold against SCCHN but also inhibited SCCHN cell clonogenicity and post-treatment DNA repair with no effect on normal cells.

Furthermore, SF increased SCCHN apoptosis by promoting the proteins associated with proapoptosis and inhibiting the proteins involved in the anti-apoptotic activity in the tested cell lines.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Combining SF with low doses of CIS or 5-FU increased cytotoxicity against SCCHN cells while having minimal effects on normal cells".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed with high amounts of sulforaphane may be considered a functional food for reducing chemo drug side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of sulforaphane in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Anthocyanin-Rich Red Cabbage Extract (ARCE) Processes Cardio-Protective Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardioprotection is a process including the use of substances associated with the preservation of the function and viability of cardiac muscle tissue by the reintroduction of oxygenic blood flow back to the tissues.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions caused by the underlying damage to blood vessels and the heart.

More precisely, CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack), or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption,

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in the US live with some form of cardiovascular disease. The condition has also been found to cause the death of about 2,200 people a day.

The exact causes of CVD are not identified. however, the most prevalent factors that cause CVD are aging, family history, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, and smoking.

Believe it or not, most patients who suffered from CVD are also associated with atherosclerosis, a condition caused by long-term plaque build-up on artery walls, that leads to narrowing the arteries and reducing blood flow through your arteries to the heart.

Metabolic factors including hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hyperkalemia are the most common syndromes that have been found to promote CVD.

Where hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hyperkalemia are conditions of abnormally high levels of sugar, cholesterol, and potassium level in the bloodstream, respectively.

Dr. Gumbiner B, the lead scientist wrote, "Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) appear to cluster in individuals, possibly because of a single, underlying metabolic disorder".

And, " Abnormal metabolic risk factors were defined as (1) an abnormal glucose value (fasting blood sugar greater than 115 mg/dl); (2) abnormal lipids (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol under 35 mg/dl in men or under 45 mg/dl in women; or low-density lipoproteins of 160 or greater; or triglycerides greater than 250 mg/dl), and (3) hypertension (blood pressure systolic above 160 mmHg; or diastolic above 90 mmHg)".

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings of a natural whole for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the effects of Brassica vegetables such as red cabbage on the alleviation of experimentally induced myocardial infarction.

H2O2 induced rat neonatal cardiomyoblasts (H9c2 cells) treatment associated with cytotoxicity (48-50%) and apoptosis (57.3%), were reduced by the application of anthocyanin-rich red cabbage extract (ARCE).

Furthermore, in the isoproterenol (ISO) induced rodent model of myocardial infarction, pretreated ARCE for 30 days recorded a significant increase in heart body weight ratio as compared to the ISO-treated group.

ARCE pretreatment also prevents the effect of ISO on the induction of the depletion of enzymatic antioxidants and apoptosis.

Moreover, ISO-induced infracted areas (10%) and derangement of the myocardium were also inhibited by the pretreatment of ARCE.

Additionally, ISO-induced heart cell membrane damage and heart calcium imbalance were also attenuated by the pretreatment of ARCE.

In other words, ARCE protected heart integrity against the isoproterenol (ISO) induced damage to the heart muscle.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Overall this study elucidates the mechanism of ARCE mediated prevention of experimentally induced myocardial damage".

Taken altogether, red cabbage may process cardioprotective activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols, the Potential Anti-Cancer Remedies

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic and medical conditions caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissues and organs.

At the early stage due to the very small size of the tumor, most cancers are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, cancer only can induce general symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort, unintended weight loss, fatigue, and loss but also lead to specific symptoms, such as localized bleeding and pain, depending on the location of the cancer.

Also, at this stage, primary cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis through the circulation of blood and fluids.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US in 2019, approximately 1,762,450 new cancer cases will be diagnosed and 606,880 deaths are results from cancer.

Furthermore, from the age perspective, older adults although are accounted for only 8% of all cases diagnosed in the US, have a 17% mortality rate compared to other age groups.

The 3 most common types of cancer are
* Breast cancer, accounts for 25.4% of the total number of new cases diagnosed in 2018.

Breast cancer starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. there are also rare cases that which breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast. The risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of women is 1/8.

Luckily, the 5 years survival rate of localized breast cancer is about 100%.

* Colorectal cancer and lung cancers are the second and third most common cancers, accounting for 43.9% of all cancers, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer.

Colorectal cancer is cancer in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix. Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

The 5-year survival rate of the localized stage of colorectal cancer is about 90%.

* Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, seed, or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of tocopherols (TOCs) on tocotrienols (TTs). γ-TT and δ-TT have the highest anti-cancer activities.

According to the tested analysis, tocopherols (TOCs) showed a strong anti-tumor proliferative activity by targeting the common molecular pathways involved in the inhibition of the cell cycle.

Furthermore, tocopherols (TOCs) activated the pathways associated with the induction of apoptosis and autophagy, and the inhibition of invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis.

Moreover, γ-TT and δ-TT (solely or in combination) also induced anti-cancer molecular pathways when used in the combination with the conventional chemotherapeutic drugs

Taken altogether, tocopherols may process anti-cancer properties in Vitro and Vivo, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Green Beans Inhibit the Expression of Liver Oxidative Stress Markers, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by overexpression of free radicals in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants caused by abundant free radicals and low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.

A free radical is an unstable atom with a single electron on the outermost ring. Given its nature, free radicals readily donate or intercept an electron from another atom, leading to a chain of the free radical cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms with a function to inhibit oxidation, come either from dietary sources or are produced by the body.

In contrast to general belief, free radical is also needed in a moderated amount for the function of the heart muscle to pump blood such as NO for vasodilation and increasing blood flow.

In a healthy person, oxidative stress is harmful because it not only induces cells lipid and protein oxidation but also causes the change of cell DNA, leading to diseases associated with oxidative stress including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Ozone, certain pesticides, cleaners, cigarette smoke, radiation, and pollution are some of the risk factors associated with the increased risk of oxidative stress.

Liver stress markers such as serum MDA refer to oxidative stress in the liver tissues caused by the overexpression of free radicals or reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes in the liver.

Dr. Halina Cichoż-Lach, the lead scientist said, "Redox state constitutes an important background of numerous liver disorders. The redox state participates in the course of inflammatory, metabolic and proliferative liver diseases.".

And, "Hepatocytic proteins, lipids, and DNA are among the cellular structures that are primarily affected by ROS and reactive nitrogen species. The process results in structural and functional abnormalities in the liver".

In other words, liver oxidative stress over the long-term induced damage of proteins, and lipid and alternation of cell DNA can lead to liver diseases, including cancer.

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belonging to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a natural compound for the prevention of liver stress, researchers examined the effect of cabbage, green beans, or seeds from sunflowers grown either on municipal sewage sludge-amended soil or soil alone fed to male and female Coturnix quail, as 50% of a complete diet, for 5 weeks.

Green beans fed male and female Coturnix quail exhibited liver GST activities significantly lower compared to those fed with sludge-grown cabbage.

Compared to the levels of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST) soil-grown cabbage demonstrated a two-fold activity increase in birds fed the other plants.

More precisely, the levels of glucosinolates present in the cabbage, are 3040 and 9253 ppm (dry basis) in the sludge-grown and soil-grown cabbage, respectively.

In other words, green beans showed a significant reduction of liver stress markers lesser than those of cabbage, regardless of soil cultivation.

Taken altogether, green beans may be considered a liver protective veggie, pending the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Relax the Vascular Smooth Muscles Against Vascular Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Vascular smooth muscle is the type of smooth muscle found within, and composing the majority of the wall of blood vessels.

Vascular smooth muscle plays a critical role in the distribution of blood to the cells of the organs and tissues by contracting or relaxing to change both the volume of blood vessels and the local blood pressure.

Compared to cardiac muscle, vascular smooth muscle undergoes slow, sustained, tonic contractions and relaxation.

Dysfunction of vascular smooth muscle cells is an important cause of vascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, and circulatory shock.

Multisystemic smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome is a rare, genetic, vascular disease, including cerebrovascular disease, aortic anomalies, intestinal hypoperistalsis, hypotonic bladder, and pulmonary hypertension.

Vascular smooth muscle tone refers to the ratio of constriction experienced by a blood vessel relative to its maximally dilated state.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of vascular diseases, researchers compare the effects of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids on vascular smooth muscle functioning.

According to the results of the experiment, the main components Docosahexaenoic acid (1-255 microM) and eicosapentaenoic acid (31-255 microM) inhibited phenylephrine-induced contractions, (8-63%) and (20-65%), respectively.

The efficacy of vascular smooth muscle relaxation was also not altered by the presence of indomethacin, NDGA, or by removal of the endothelium

Additionally, Linoleic acid (18:2n6) and arachidonic acid (20:4n6) found in omega 3, and 6 also induced significant relaxation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " fatty acid-induced relaxation of the rat aorta is specific to polyunsaturated fatty acids, 20:5n3, 22:6n3, 18:2n6 and 20:4n6".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of vascular diseases by enhancing the vascular smooth muscle function, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intake and the Risk of Endometriosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Coffee is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Epidemiological studies do not agree that coffee regular intake is associated with the risk of endometriosis, according to the IRCSS Fondazione Ca' Granda.

In a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies published up to January 2013 to analyze the relative risks (RR) of endometriosis for any, high and low versus no coffee/caffeine consumption, researchers filed the following reports

1. A total of six case-control and two cohort studies, including a total of 1,407 women with endometriosis were found in this review
2. The relative ratio was 1.26 and 1.13 for coffee and caffeine consumed participants respectively, in compared to the non-consumption group
3. The overall relative ratio was 1.18 in the coffee consumption group after taking into account the number of cups of coffee intake and other risk factors
4. Risk of endometriosis increased reduced to 1.09 compared to high and low caffeine consumption as compared to no consumption, respectively.
Dr. Chiaffarino F, based on the information of this review said, "The present meta-analysis provided no evidence for an association between coffee/caffeine consumption and the risk of endometriosis. Coffee/caffeine consumption, as currently used in the diet, does not carry a health risk".

Others, the examine data from two case-control studies conducted in Northern Italy between 1984 and 1999 with 504 women aged < 65 years (median age 33 years, range 20-65) with a laparoscopically confirmed diagnosis of endometriosis, admitted to a network of obstetrics and gynecology departments in Milan, Brescia and Pavia and 504 healthy women acted as a control, researchers at the Università di Milano after adjusting to other risk factors suggested that there may be a link between diet and risk of endometriosis but coffee intake do not form the significant risk of endometriosis incidence.

In contrast to the above studies, the cross-sectional study included 28,822 women, 1,228 women with endometriosis, and the self-reported diagnosis was confirmed by medical records conducted by the joint institutes led by the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institute, coffee intake was associated to risk of development of endometriosis.

The study also indicated that even coffee showed a positive association with the risk of endometriosis, but future studies are needed to explore the significance of other factors such as age at menarche, level of education, body mass index (BMI), parity, oral contraceptive (OC) use, infertility, smoking, and alcohol intake in the diagnosis of endometriosis and understanding of its etiology.

Taking all together, although there is conflicting information related to coffee intake and the risk of endometriosis, women with a family history of endometriosis are recommended to reduce their intake of coffee and coffee caffeine and consult with their doctors before applying a high amount of coffee daily.

Antioxidant Sinigrin Isolated From Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli,... May Be The Potential Anti Atherosclerosis Chemical Compound, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Sinigrin may be used as a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, according to studies.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is made of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis. 13.8% prevalence is among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, the coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.

Risk factors of atherosclerosis include high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese, unhealthy diet, family history of heart disease and physical inactivity, particularly smoking.

Some researchers suggested that since cholesterol makes up a big part of the plaque, an unhealthy diet with a high saturated trans fat, red meat, and processed meat may be the major cause of atherosclerosis.

In other words, the Western diet is one of the major culprits that cause the majority of cases of atherosclerosis.

Dr. Meifang Wang, the lead researcher in the study of "Western Diet Increases Inflammatory Responses and Atherosclerosis Progression via IGF-1 Receptor in ApoE-Deficient Mice" said, "....lowered circulating IGF-1 increases atherosclerosis progression in atherosclerosis-prone apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (ApoE−/−) while increased circulating IGF-1 downregulates vascular pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression, reduces systemic and vascular oxidant stress, vascular cytokine expression, and decreases atherosclerosis progression".

And, "the pro-inflammatory phenotype that is enhanced by WD in ApoE−/− mice is further enhanced by specific IGF1R deficiency in monocytes/macrophages, and may consequently increase atherosclerosis progression".

The results suggested that the Western diet-induced atherosclerosis progression through the increase of production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and decrease of the function of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as a mediator of anabolic responses in many cells and tissues.

Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belonging to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural bioactive compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis examined the effect of sinigrin against plaque accumulation on the arterial walls.

On atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice, injection sinigrin exerted a significant effect in the inhibition of the serum concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), calcium (Ca2+), and pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with plaque accumulated on the wall of the arteries.

Furthermore, oral administration of sinigrin attenuated the mRNA expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), which form a part of immunoglobulin superfamily in inflammatory and immune responses.

Moreover, injection also reduced the expression of genes C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), and CCL5 on aorta tissues associated with the risk of atherosclerosis.

The expression of low-density lipoprotein was also reduced by the injection of sinigrin observed by some keys regulators of cholesterol such as sterol regulatory element-binding protein-2 (SREBP-2).

Interestingly, increasing the concentration of sinigrin at the dose up to 100 μg/ml also significantly suppressed the levels of Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and nuclear translocation of NF-κB, cell signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation.

Additionally, at a contraction ut to 100 μg/ml, sinigrin inhibited the c-Jun-NH (2)-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway which plays a critical role in regulating cellular differentiation.

The findings strongly suggested that sinigrin inhibited the onset of atherosclerosis by lowering the low-density lipoproteins and mechanisms associated with inflammatory induction of plaque accumulation on the arterial wall.

Dr. Jang YJ, the lead scientist wrote, "sinigrin decreases the TNF-α-stimulated VCAM-1 expression through the suppression of NF-κB and MAP kinases signaling pathways, Overall, sinigrin has the potential to be used in reducing the risks of atherosclerosis".

Taken altogether, sinigrin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beetroot's Betanin Enhances the Effects of Chemotherapy In Vitros

By Kyle J. Norton

Chemotherapy is an action in which a substance including drugs was used to treat any disease, particularly, cancer.

In cancers, chemotherapy is a treatment to kill or damage cancer cells in a specific area. Besides chemotherapy, the most common treatment for cancer in conventional medicine are surgery and radiation, depending on the severity of the condition.

The aim of chemotherapy is to cure or control the progression of cancer and improve the quality of life of patients by reducing symptoms.

In other words, chemotherapy is effective to shrink a tumor before surgery or kill the remaining cancer cells that cannot completely be removed by radiation and surgery.

Depending on the type and stage and grade of cancer, treatment may be a single chemo drug or several drugs.

Chemotherapy has been found to induce serious side effects, including fatigue. hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, nausea and vomiting, and constipation due to its nature to kill cells (cancer and healthy cells) indiscriminatingly.

Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

Researchers with an aim to discover a natural compound or whole food which enhances chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer examined the effects of betanin (BET) co-administration with the potent anticancer drugs e.g. doxorubicin (DOX) in reducing the side effects.

The study included the introduction of a new pH-responsive nanocarrier via decoration of gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) by (methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly ((2-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-itaconic acid) (PGNPs) loaded with 20.5 % of DOX and 16.25of BET that overcomes the restrictions of BET and provides the synergistic effect of DOX@BET.

At the adjusting of the pH of the environment, the stimulated release of DOX and BET from PGNPs showed a significant synergistic effect of DOX@BET not only inhibited the tested cancer cell line MCF-7 but also the side effect caused by DOX.

In other words, the betanin enhanced chemo drug efficacy and inhibited the treatment of drug toxicity.

Based on the findings, Dr. Amjadi S, the lead scientist said, "(The synergistic effect of DOX@BET may contribute to the) developed smart nanocarrier will be a hopeful nanocarrier for cancer therapy".

In order to find out more information about the enhanced chemotherapy researchers investigated the activity of extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA approved red food color E162 with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin (adriamycin) in human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7).

Individual treatment of doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a cytotoxic effect in the two tested cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner.

The cytotoxicity induced by beetroot extract at the concentration of 29 µg/ml was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin.

Beetroot extract inhibited the cancer proliferation at a trend of gradual decrease of the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) compared to doxorubicin completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days at the same concentration level.

In the additional differentiation of the results, researchers found that the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract is attributed to the effects of betanin, the major betacyanin constituent.

Based on the findings, betanin co-administration with chemo drug not only have a profound effect in enhancing the function of the anti-cancer drug but also reduce the side effect induced by conventional medicine.

Taken altogether, betanin used alone or combined with other chemo drugs may be considered medicine for the treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Pungent Spice Onions Suppress Weight Gain in Obese Animals in Vivos

By Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, including over 650 million were obese worldwide.

The most common causes of obesity are associated with
* An increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, processed foods, and red meat.

* An increase in physical inactivity.

The WHO in the explanation of the causes of obesity wrote, "Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with the development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing, and education".

Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition, and the use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants, or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of overweight and obesity.

Epidemiologically, obese people are associated with an increased risk of diseases and health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Some researchers suggested that dietary changes, increased physical activity, and behavior changes have been found to enhance weight loss in obesity. In extremely obese subjects, prescription medications and weight-loss surgery may be the only options.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and is found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of obesity, researchers examined the effects of
garlic oil and onion oil on serum lipid levels in hyperlipidemia in an animal model.

The study included 96 Sprague-Dawley rats randomly allocated into eight groups that received repeated oral administration of volatile oils extracted from garlic and onion for 60 days, based on their body weight and serum levels of triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (TC).

According to the tested assays compared to the baseline, the volatile oils of garlic and onion suppressed weight gain induced by HFD accompanied by the decrease of adipose tissue weight.

The decreased levels of TG, TC, and LDL-C and increased serum level of HDL-C were also found in the treatment group compared to rats in the hyperlipidemia model groups.

Furthermore, treatment with volatile oil also protects the liver against hepatic steatosis by improving the effects of the lipid profile.

In other words, volatile oils extracted from garlic and onion inhibit the risk of obesity by improving the liver and adipose tissue in fat metabolisms.

Dr. Yang C, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "Our results implied that garlic oil and onion oil have anti-obesity properties that can counteract the effects of an HFD on body weight, adipose tissue weight, and serum lipid profiles".

Moreover, the assessment of the effect of onion peel tea (OPT) in a mouse model of high-fat-diet-induced obesity suggested that BALB/c mice fed a high-fat diet for three weeks, followed by a normal diet with or without OPT for 28 days suppresses the increases in body weight and level of epididymal fat tissue, similar to those of the aforementioned results.

Additionally, OPT administration also significantly reduced the serum concentrations of total cholesterol on day 14 and those of glucose and leptin on day 28.

These results suggested OPT inhibits the parameters associated with the onset of obesity.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with garlic may be considered functional food/foods for the prevention and treatment of obesity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Exerts Anti Hypertension Activity in Vivos

By Kyle J. Norton

High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

High blood pressure is also a condition in the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and diabetes.

Depending on the levels of blood pressure, most patients with high blood pressure are asymptomatic, However, long-term very high blood pressure has been found to induce dizziness and light head, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, flushing, chest pain, and visual changes.

Some medical conditions such as kidney disease and long-term stress are associated with high blood pressure.

According to the American hypertension Association, long-term untreated high blood pressure can induce complications that reduce or obstruct the function of the heart and blood vessels, leading to heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

Conventional hypertensive medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects.

If you are currently taking hypertensive medicine, please make sure you know all the side effects of the preventive measure.

Some researchers also found that excessive energy intake and obesity are major causes of hypertension.

Dr. Savica V, the lead author in the study "The effect of nutrition on blood pressure" wrote, "Obesity is associated with increased activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and sympathetic nervous systems, possibly other mineralocorticoid activity, insulin resistance, salt-sensitive hypertension, and excess salt intake, and reduced kidney function. High sodium chloride intake strongly predisposes to hypertension".

And, "Increased alcohol consumption may acutely elevate blood pressure. High intakes of potassium, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and protein, along with exercise and possibly vitamin D, may reduce blood pressure".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings of a potential compound for the treatment of high blood pressure, researchers examined the effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) on a hypertensive animal model.

Selected rats induced hypertension by oral administration of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride, 40 mg/kg body weight to the study were divided into seven groups (n = 10).
* The groups 1-3 included normotensive control rats, hypertensive (Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride) rats, and hypertensive control rats treated with atenolol (an antihypertensive drug).

* Groups 4 and 5 included normotensive and hypertensive (Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride) rats treated with 4 % supplementation of turmeric, respectively.

* Groups 6 and 7 included normotensive and hypertensive rats treated with 4 % supplementation of ginger, respectively.

During the experiment, researchers found that Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride hypertensive rats showed a significant increase in ATP and ADP hydrolysis, adenosine deaminase involved in purine metabolism, and acetylcholinesterase involved in the regulation of blood vessel tone compared to the control rats.

In other words, the injection of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride causes the increase of enzymes associated with the constriction of blood vessel tone, blocking the blood vessel dilatation and blood flow through the coronary blood vessels.

Furthermore, Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride rats also demonstrated an elevated production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 and - 6, interferon-γ, and tumor necrosis factor-α) and reduced levels of an anti-inflammatory cytokine such as interleukin-10, a leading cause of the increase in arterial stiffness and risk of CVD.

Moreover, increased butyrylcholinesterase activity associated with chronic inflammation was also found in the Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride rats.

However, all parameters caused by the injection of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride involved in the onset of hypertension were totally inhibited by the application of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "these activities could suggest a possible insight about the protective mechanisms of the rhizomes against hypertension-related inflammation."

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or in combination with ginger may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous vegetables Inhibit Oral Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Oral cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the oral cavity. In the early stage, the abnormal cells only appear in the surface lining of the cavity. However, in the late stage, the infectious cells may travel a distance away from the original site to invade other cells and tissue.

Early diagnosed oral cancer may have a close to 100% recovery.

Most cases of oral cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of oral tissue.

However, at the advanced stage, oral cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 51,540 people were diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. The disease causes the death of an estimated 10,030 people.

The 5-year survival rate of oral cancer is 66%, including all stages.

Family history, smoking, alcohol drinking, infection by the HPV virus, poor hygiene, and genetic preposition are some of the risk factors associated with the disease.

According to the cancer society, the 5 survival rate of oral cancer is about 60% plus without taking into consideration the stage of cancer.

The early symptoms of oral cancer include lip or mouth sores and persistent pain,... Check with a dentist, if you experience the above unexplained or persistent symptoms, particularly, if the sore mouth does not heal in 2 weeks.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings of the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding potential and natural foods for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers investigated the effect of sulforaphane, a predominant isothiocyanate in Brassica oleracea, a family of cruciferous vegetables on oral carcinoma cell lines.

According to the tested analysis. sulforaphane showed strong growth inhibition of oral carcinoma cell lines by blocking the cancer cell migration and invasion activities.

Based on the Multiplex protein analysis kits, the impairment of the migration and invasion induced by sulforaphane were attributed to associated with the anti-orchestration in the secretion of metalloprotease levels including MMP-1 and MMP-2.

In other words, sulforaphane demonstrated a therapeutic potency as an inhibitor of metastasis in oral carcinoma cell lines.

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables processed abundantly sulforaphane, may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Beta-Sitosterol Alleviates the Progression of Fatty Liver in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.

There are two main types of fatty liver disease:
* Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a medical condition characterized by fat accumulated in the liver tissue other than excessive consumption of alcohol.
According to the American liver foundation, Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is one of the most common causes of liver disease, and approximately 30% (100 million) individuals in the United States are estimated to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

The causes of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease are unknown. Also, as of today researchers do not understand why some people are susceptible to liver fat accumulation while others are not.

The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFL) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP), a relatively rare disorder that happens only during pregnancy.

* Alcoholic fatty liver diseases is a condition caused by lifelong heavy alcohol use.

In other words, substances found in alcohol damage liver cells, promote inflammation and weaken your body's natural defenses. More precisely, the more alcohol that you drink, the more you damage your liver.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease is the earliest stage of alcohol-related liver disease.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers elucidated the effects of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol on a high-fat Western diet (HFWD)-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

According to the results after 33 weeks of treatment* stigmasterol and β-sitosterol were effective in protecting the liver against HFWD-induced NAFLD.

* The parameters that contributed to the onset of NAFLD are triacylglycerols (TGs), phosphatidylcholines, cholesteryl esters, diacylglycerols, and free fatty acids (FFAs).

* The efficacy of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol in the alleviation of NAFLD was mainly associated with decreases in hepatic cholesterol, TGs with polyunsaturated fatty acids, and alterations of free hepatic FFA.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "phytosterols, at a dose comparable to that suggested for humans by the FDA for the reduction of plasma cholesterol levels, are shown to protect against NAFLD in this long-term (33-week) study".

Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Fermented Soy Shows Lowering Blood Cholesterol Property, Clinical Diagnosis Suggests

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques to build up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

In other words, healthy blood cholesterol is any level with either less than or equal to 4 (low-density lipoprotein/ 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

The most common diseases associated with high cholesterol are cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Most patients with high cholesterol also have diabetes and high blood pressure.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia.

According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that processes high blood cholesterol activity researchers examined the health benefits of QCAN® Plus-an easily available fermented soy drink.

According to the results of the analysis of the study that was performed on lean (n = 10) and obese (n = 10) subjects during pre-soy (weeks -2, -1, and 0), on-soy (weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4), and post-soy (weeks 6, 8, 10, and 12) periods,* Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were significantly reduced in both lean and obese individuals during on-soy (P ≤ .05).

* Furthermore, cytokines such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) AA and AB/BB were significantly lowered on-soy compared with pre-soy (P ≤ .05) in lean subjects, and PDGF AA, IL-1RA, and GMCSF were significantly reduced on-soy (P ≤ .05) in obese subjects.

* The product is safe.

In other words, QCAN® Plus-an easily available fermented soy drink. showed a strong effect on the inhibition of high blood cholesterol and lipid oxidation.

Collectively, researchers said, "Our preliminary study on Q-CAN Plus ensures its safety for consumption and highlights its hypolipidemic and suppressive effect on certain cytokines ".

Taken altogether, fermented soy may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol Inhibits the Onset of Insulin Resistance In Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites are clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Insulin resistance is a condition in which cells that convert glucose to energy in the muscles, body fat, intestine, and liver ignore the signal of the hormone insulin signaling.

In other words, patients with insulin resistance are hyperglycemic. The syndrome is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes.

Other hallmarks of diabetes are hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, which is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

Most cases of insulin resistance in the Western world are involved in the clogged-up insulin receptors.
As the signals of the hormone insulin are blocked, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the body.

Over time insulin resistance leads to damage to the beta cell in the pancreas, an early condition of prediabetes and types 2 diabetes.

According to statistics, over 100 million Americans are living with insulin resistance. Approximately 1 in 3, including half of those age 60 and older have a silent blood sugar problem known as insulin resistance.

There are no single causes of insulin resistance, Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, overweight or obesity, too much belly fat, physical inactivity, smoking, and certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s disease or polycystic ovary disease are some of the prevalent factors that induce the risk of the condition.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed insulin resistance.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, researchers investigated the anti-diabetic activity of β-sitosterol (BSS) isolated from Acacia nilotica (L.) Delile on diabetic complications.

According to the results from of experiment with ANL orally administrated (50 and 200mg/kg) to alloxanized mice (blood glucose > 200mg/dL) for 20days,
* ANL lowered (65%, P< 0.001) systemic glucose load in diabetic mice, which was otherwise 398% higher than control.

* ANL lowered (35%) insulin resistance, without any significant effect on insulin sensitivity (P> 0.05).

* Anti-hyperglycemic properties of ANL were further supported by lowering of HbA1c (34%; P< 0.001) and improved glucose utilization (OGTT).

* Hepatic (ALT, AST) and renal (creatinine, BUN) injury markers associated with the onset of diabetic complications were also lowered by the administration of ANL.

* ANL also exerted a normalization of dyslipidemia.

* The levels of oxidative stress markers MDA in the liver, kidney, and skeletal muscle were lowered through the herbal medicine antioxidant activity.

The efficacy of ANL in inhibiting insulin resistance was attributed mostly to the parts of high phenolic and flavonoid content, tocopherol, catechol, and β-sitosterol that enhance the levels of antioxidant defense protein Nrf2.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Inhibit Parameters induced by Diabetes in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.

Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the antioxidant activity of Omega 3 fatty acid used in a combination with metformin (Met) in diabetic rats.

The study included 50 rats induced diabetes by the administration of streptozotocin, 15 min after the administration of nicotinamide with ten animals per group divided into the following: Control; Diabetic untreated; Diabetic + ω-3; Diabetic + metformin (metfm) and Diabetic + ω-3 + metf groups for 28 days.

Diabetes rats before treatment showed a significant increase of calcium to phosphorus ratio, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), glucose and insulin resistance, and decrease of parathyroid hormone(PTH), phosphorus, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and hepatic glycogen.

ω-3 or metformin single treatment caused significant elevations in hepatic glycogen, total alkaline phosphatase (TALP), osteocalcin, PTH, estradiol, and calcium; however, significant decreases in TRAP and glucose.

Co-administration of ω-3 and metformin caused more desirable effects on TALP, c-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen, estradiol, and calcium to phosphorus ratio compared to the single administration.

In other words, co-administration restored the parameter changes induced by the injection of streptozotocin-induced diabetes in tested rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the combined but not the single administration of ω-3 and metformin could be preferably used in the management of bone health in the diabetic state"

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids used in a combination with other conventional medicines may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Coffee May Normalize Sex Hormones Androgen and Estrogen Naturally, Reveal by Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

Coffee, a popular and social beverage, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

A recent study suggested that coffee may have a direct effect on the influence of sex hormone steroid-binding globulin(SSBG) in stimulated production of estrogen and androgen depending on levels in the host.

Sex hormones are a class of hormones, that affect sexual development and reproduction. Steroid-binding globulin(SSBG), is a sex hormone, having a direct effect on androgen and estrogen.

In sex hormones and sexual differentiation, the most influential hormone in human sexual desire is testosterone.

Low levels of estrogen in women can also reduce sex drive caused by vaginal dryness that can lead to painful intercourse

Mentally, women with low levels of estrogen also experience unstable moods and sleep patterns that can have a strong impact on sexual desire.

However, sexual motivation is influenced by a set of hormones, including testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, oxytocin, and vasopressin...... Altogether, they control the ability to engage in sexual behaviors.

The actual causes of abnormal levels of sex hormones are debatable. But all researchers agree that aging plays an important role in the production of the sex hormone steroid-binding globulin(SSBG).

Diseases, also the risk factors associated with abnormal levels of serum of SHBG concentrations include obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes hypothyroidism, Cushing syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, hypertension, ....... and androgen steroid use

The normal ranges for serum of SHBG concentrations in adults are:
* Males: 10 to 57 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L)
*Females (nonpregnant): 18 to 144 nmol/L

In an 8-week parallel-arm randomized controlled trial with Healthy adults (n = 42) recruited from the Boston community, including regular coffee consumers, nonsmokers, and overweight, randomized to five 6-ounce cups of caffeinated or decaffeinated instant coffee or water per day, at 4 weeks, researchers surprisingly found that
* Decaffeinated coffee drinking was associated with borderline significantly increased levels of SHBG in women, but not in men.

*. At week 4, decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone and caffeinated coffee decreased only total testosterone in women.

*. In contrast to women participants, men's consumption of caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol hormones.

*. The study also indicated that caffeinated coffee consumption does not exert any effect on SHBG in either men or women.

These results suggested that intake of coffee may have a strong impact in maintained normal levels of SHBG, thus reducing the risk of low levels of SHBG induced higher testosterone levels in overweight women, causing androgenization and development of polycystic ovarian syndrome.

And in men, normal levels of testosterone may also have a significant contribution to a healthy libido, building muscle mass, and maintaining energy levels.

Some researchers suggested that increased testosterone levels for middle-aged (30 to 50 years old) and older males may also improve the physical energy, strength, stamina, mental aggressiveness which were lost in the aging population.

In contrast to the above differentiation, in type 2 diabetic patients, coffee and coffee caffeine showed an elevated effect as a mediator of sex hormone-binding globulin in both androgen and estrogen particularly in women compared to healthy young adults.

Dr. Eric L. Ding and colleagues in the study to evaluate "Sex Hormone–Binding Globulin and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Women and Men" said, " Among women, higher plasma levels of sex hormone–binding globulin were prospectively associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and " the predicted odds ratio of type 2 diabetes per standard-deviation increase in the plasma level of sex hormone-binding globulin was 0.28 (95% CI, 0.13 to 0.58) among women and 0.29 (95% CI, 0.15 to 0.58) among men".

The analysis strongly suggested that coffee regardless of type has a negative correlation with the risk of diabetes through increasing levels of SHBG.

Additionally, according to the cross-sectional study of 2377 nondiabetic pre- and postmenopausal women from the E3N cohort study in a multivariate adjusted model, intake of more than 3 cups of coffee daily coffee and caffeine ≥265 mg/day was associated with an increased SHBG level distribution (<46.3 nmol/L), in compared to no risk association of decaffeinated coffee subgroup.

In other words, in low levels of SHBG nondiabetic pre- and postmenopausal in compared to healthy women, injection of caffeinated coffee increased levels of sex hormones estrogen and testosterone

The above analysis was supported by the examination of the study during a median follow-up of 10 years of 359 postmenopausal women with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes matched with 359 control subjects by age, race, duration of follow-up, and time of blood draw, coffee and caffeine were associated to increased levels of fee and total testosterone among postmenopausal women.

In Summary, the evidence indicated that coffee and caffeine have an extreme effect on the exhibition of the sex hormone estrogen and testosterone through the increased lower level of SHBG in menopausal women and prevented the onset of type 2 diabetes without affecting the serum in healthy individuals.

Decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone through significantly increased levels of SHBG in overweight women who are at risk of diseases associated with overexpression of testosterone.

And caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol in men.

Altogether, coffee may be considered as a function food in mediated production of sex hormone estrogen and testosterone against diseases and syndromes caused by low levels of SSBG.
