Turmeric Bioactive Compound Curcumin Blocks the Progression of Thyroid Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of medical and chronic diseases characterized by cells growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of specific organ in the body.

Over time, the alternative cells induced tumor may become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, depending on the grade of the tumor.

At the later stage, the most invasive tumor can induce secondary metastasis by spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some points during their lifetimes, according to the data from 2013–2015.

In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.

The thyroid, one of the largest endocrine glands found in the neck, below the Adam's Apple plays an essential role to regulate the use of energy, make of proteins and produce hormones.

Thyroid cancer, the medical condition caused alternation of the cells in the thyroid gland found 3 times more common in women compared to men, can be classified into 4 most common types
* Papillary thyroid cancer
Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer, accounting for over 80 percent of all cases. It tends to develop in the women age group between 30-40 years with the tendency to grow slowly.
Papillary thyroid cancer can be treated successfully if diagnosed early.

* Follicular thyroid cancer
Follicular thyroid cancer, the second most common thyroid cancer, accounting for over 15 % of all cases. It is a low growing cancer with peak onset from ages 40 through 60.
Follicular thyroid cancer can be treated successfully if diagnosed early.

* Medullary thyroid cancer
Medullary thyroid cancer, the third most common thyroid cancer that makes up only 3 percent of all cases, arises from thyroid hormone producing cells with abnormally high levels of calcitonin. Medullary thyroid cancer tends to grow slowly but it can spread to distant parts of the body, if not treated early.

* Anaplastic thyroid cancer
Anaplastic thyroid cancer is the rare case of thyroid cancer, accounting for less than 2 percent of all cases. It tends to grow and spread very quickly.
Anaplastic thyroid cancer is deadly, with only 10% of survival rate, 3 years after diagnosed.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of curcumin on invasion and metastasis of thyroid cancers.

According to the tested differentiation, curcumin inhibited the multiple metastasis steps of K1 papillary thyroid cancer cells line.

At a dose-dependent manner,  curcumin also suppressed K1 cells viability, attachment, spreading, migration and invasion abilities.

Furthermore, curcumin could also inhibit the expression and activity of an enzyme associated with cancer cell proliferation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " curcumin might be an effective tumouristatic agent for the treatment of aggressive papillary thyroid carcinomas".

Moreover, in human papillary thyroid carcinoma BCPAP cells, curcumin exerted anti thyroid cancer effect by increasing the expression of the tumor suppressor E-cadherin and decreasing the overexpression of vimentin found in various epithelial cancers.

Additionally, curcumin also blocked the activated transforming growth factor -β1 associated with the expression and activity of an enzyme associated with cancer cell proliferation.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of thyroid cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Coltsfoot Improves Asthmatic Symptoms

By Kyle J. Norton

Respiratory disease is medical conditions that affect the breathing organ and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves, and muscles breathing,...

Most common symptom of respiratory disease is shortness of breath.

The lungs formed part of the respiratory symptoms, sare a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax). The organ plays a critical role in inhaling oxygens to the body and exhaling carbon dioxide from body.

Asthma is a medical and chronic condition characterized by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs.

Most common symptoms of asthma are episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, and reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.

Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.

Asthma not only interferes with daily activities and also can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.

Believe it or not, African-Americans in the U.S. die from asthma at a higher rate than people of other races or ethnicities.

Dr. Laurent Guilleminault, in the examing environmental effect in the risk asthma, said, "The rates of asthma and allergy (Type 1 hypersensitivity disorders) have been increasing worldwide for the last few decades. Various theories have been proposed to account for this alarming trend. One of these is the impact of environmental toxicants".

And, "repletion of glutathione levels (with oral supplementation of N-acetylcysteine), and enhancement of glutathione transferase function (using sulforaphane) might be therapeutic options for countering type 1 hypersensitivity disorders caused by environmental chemicals".

In other words, environmental toxins cause reduced levels of antioxidant in the body are associated with the risk of asthma onset

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of respiratory disease, researchers examined the effect of invigorating Kidney (Viscum coloratum 15g, Psoralea corylifolia 15g, Eucommia ulmoides 15g, Lycium chinense 9g, Tussilago farfara 15g, Artemisia capillaris 9g, and Pogostemon cablin 9g as daily dosage) on asthma by measuring maximal expiratory flow-volume curve (MEFV) in the convalescent stage.

In a total of 66 cases of asthmatics were examined, researchers found that before treatment by the invigorating Kidney decoction, the results of FEV, PEF, V75, V50, V25 in 35 cases or 53.03% of the total demonstrated a significantly negative effect compared with healthy persons.

In other words, in the convalescent stage, convalescent stage, over half of the asthmatics showed obstruction of airways and chiefly of small airways.

According to the tested analysis after treament of the decoction only exerted effects on different parameters associated with the improvement of MEFV in some extent, but also reversed the airway obstruction of asthmatics in the convalescent stage.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the authors indicated that the prompt treatment for asthmatics in the convalescent stage was conductive early to prevent emphysema and confirmed that the treatment with Chinese herbs of chiefly invigorating Kidney deserved to be propagated.".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot used alone and combination with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of asthmatics in the convalescent stage, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits Anxiety Induced by Chronic Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over a period of time, leading to the release of hormone cortisol and adrenaline.

Most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.

Overtime unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of anxiety.

Anxiety disorder is a class of medical conditions associated with chronic worries and fear, leading to symptoms of the fast heart rate and shakiness.

Most people with anxiety may experience the feeling of nervousness in responding to events such as a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.

According to the statistics, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in Canada and approximately 1 in every 8 Canadians is affected by the illness. In other words, over 250,000 people in Canada suffer from anxiety.

Most common prevalent factors that induce the risk of the condition are, family history, gender (women are more likely diagnosed with the condition compared to men), chronic stress, people with traumatic life experiences and the use of substances are some prevalent risk factors of anxiety.

However, some researchers suggested a moderate physical activity, mind-body practices of breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation have been found to reduce stress, a strong positive impact against anxiety.

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America wrote, "Whether, in good times or bad, most people say that stress interferes at least moderately with their lives. Chronic stress can affect your health, causing symptoms from headaches, high blood pressure, and chest pain to heart palpitations, skin rashes, and loss of sleep".

"Physical activity is a proven way to reduce stress. Regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, and improve sleep and self-esteem. Other effective methods include mind-body practices of breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of symptoms associated with chronic stress, researchers examined the efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of Ashwagandha roots in reducing stress and anxiety in adults who were under stress.

A total of 64 subjects with a history of chronic stress included were randomized to either drug treatment group and were asked to take one capsule containing 300 mg of high-concentration full-spectrum extract from the root of the Ashwagandha plant or the placebo control group. twice a day for a period of 60 days.

Based on the results of the tested analysis, the treatment group received a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract showed a significant reduction in scores on all the stress-assessment scales on Day 60 comapred to placebo.

The serum cortisol levels were substantially reduced in the Ashwagandha group, comapred to the placebo group.

According to the patient's reports, there are no serious adverse events reported during the experimental period.

In other words, the short-term application of the Ashwagandha plant at a high concentration not only reduced the levels of c stress but also stress-induced hormone expression of anxiety.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individual's resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention of anxiety induced by chronic stress, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Healthy Legume: Green Bean Kills Breast Cancer Cells

By Kyle J. Norton

The woman breast is made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a woman's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by the abnormal cell growth either in the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the breast before growing into a tumor by invading the deeper layers of the organ.

According to the statistics, the lifetime risk of invasive breast cancer developing is 12%.

In 2019, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosed at the early stage is closed to 100%.

Epidemiologically, there are several factors that can reduce the risk of breast cancer including breastfeeding, early age at first full-term pregnancy, an increasing number of births, preeclampsia, longer duration of breastfeeding.

Believe it or not, in a new study, published in the journal Breast Cancer Research, women who drink five cups of coffee a day or more can reduce the risk of getting certain types of breast cancer. (How many women can do that without developing nervous tension).

Dr. Davaasambuu Ganmaa, the lead scientist said, "This was a prospective cohort study with 85,987 female participants in the Nurses’ Health Study".

And, "The multivariate relative risks (RRs) of breast cancer across categories of caffeinated coffee consumption were: 1.0 for <1cup/mo (reference category), 1.01 (95% confidence interval: 0.92–1.12) for 1/mo-4.9/wk, 0.92 (0.84–1.01) for 5/wk-1.9/d, 0.93 (0.85–1.02) for 2–3.9/d, 0.92 (0.82–1.03) for ≥4 cups per day (p for trend= 0.14)".

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent compound that processes anti-cancer activity, researchers examined BN999, a fermentation product of soybean, black bean, and green bean mixture in the inhibition of the growth of human breast cancer AU565 cell.

The application of the mixed product showed a significant effect on the induction of breast cancer cells apoptosis without affecting the health of normal human cells.

Furthermore, BN999 treatment also activated the protein calpain significantly associated with adverse breast cancer-specific survival of the inflammatory breast cancer at low levels.

Moreover, BN999 also promoted caspases proteins such as caspase-8, -9, and -3 in the induction of cancer cell apoptosis through several extrinsic pathways.

Based on the findings, researchers after taking into account co and confounder wrote, "these data suggest that BN999 has the potential to be used as cancer chemoprevention or therapeutic agent".

Taken altogether, green beans used combined with fermentation products of soybean, the black bean may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Antioxidant Lycopene Reduces Risk and Treatment of Gastric Ulcer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Gastric or stomach ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining the stomach.

Most common symptoms of gastric ulcers are abdominal pain, bloating, septic shock, dyspepsia, and blood in the stool due to bleeding, unintended weight loss and loss of appetite and gastrointestinal discomforts.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of mood disorder, leading to reduced quality of life in many patients.

The imbalance between stomach acid and upper GI tract mucosa is the main cause of the condition onset associated with the use of certain medication, including aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic gastritis.

Epidemiologically, periodontal disease, aging, smoking, long-term use of mechanical ventilation and critical illness are at an increased risk of gastric ulcer.

Dr. Haruka Fujinami lead scientist in the examination of long term intake of conventional medicine in the risk of gastric ulcer wrote, "The rates of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection were significantly low (P = 0.039), while the proportion of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) users and vascular disease significantly increased over the period studied (P = 0.034 and P = 0.04, respectively)".

And, "It’s found that the primary cause of peptic ulcer bleeding changed from H. pylori infection to use of NSAIDs over the 7-year period of study. It seems that the number of low-dose aspirin users has increased with the increase in the proportion of vascular disease".

The results strongly suggested if you are a long-term user of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, your risk of gastric ulcer is significantly higher.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of ulcers, researchers examined the protective effects of lycopene on an indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer model.

The study included a total of 42 adult male Wistar rats induced by gastric ulcer by divided into six groups of seven animals as follows: control, indomethacin, lansoprazole, lycopene 10 mg/kg, lycopene 50 mg/kg and lycopene 100 mg/kg.

According to the tested analysis, the % Tail DNA and Mean Tail Moment in the gastric ulcer group were significantly decreased by the treatment of lycopene at the dose of 100 mg/kg, compared to other treatment groups.

Furthermore, the treatment of lycopene at the dose of 100 mg/kg not only decreased the increased levels of malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase in the gastric ulcer group but also increased the antioxidant enzymes in the gastric tissue without affecting the levels of catalase.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "lycopene might have a protective effect against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer and oxidative stress in rats".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Reduces Risk of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens.

Inflammation can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

However, in some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal condition also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Most cases of acute inflammatory are resolved within a few days without causing damage to the wound tissues.

However, if the immune first line of defense can not completely destroy the invaders within a period of 3 to 8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Diseases associated with low-grade chronic inflammation include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Dr. in the examination of the etiology of  chronic inflammation (CI) suggested that CI can result from the following:
* Failure of eliminating the agent causing an acute inflammation such as infectious disease induced organisms
* Long-term exposure to a low level of a particular irritant or foreign materials that cannot be eliminated by an enzymatic breakdown in the body including substances or industrial chemicals.

An autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system that attacks healthy tissue,  such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

* Recurrent episodes of acute inflammation.

* Inflammation that causes oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction such as advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

Conventionally, treatment of acute phase inflammation is to manage inflammation and prevent the risk of long-term damage, including anti-inflammatory nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which can be bought without a prescription.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the efficacy of turmeric on continued oxidative stress and oxidative damage that lead to chronic inflammation in the mediation of most chronic diseases.

At the molecular level, turmeric showed a significant anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing the proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including the NF-κB and COX-2.

Furthermore, the proteins associated with the response to cytokines and growth factors such as signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 was also inhibited by the injection of turmeric.

Moreover, the administration of turmeric also inhibited the production of ROS by promoting the production of antioxidants enzymes such as nrf2, a protein that regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage.

Furthermore, numerous studies also indicated that curcumin not only is highly potent against the antimicrobial disease but also inhibited the onset of various chronic diseases including cancers, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological and autoimmune diseases.

As of today, over 100 different clinical trials also showed that curcumin is safe, tolerable and effective against various chronic diseases in humans.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
