On finding a potential compound for the treatment of asthma researchers investigated the effect of Allium cepa L. extract (AcE) and its quercetin (Qt) on cytokine and on smooth muscle contraction associated with asthma in vitro and Vivo.

According to the tested analysis, * In vitro, AcE 10, 100 or 1000 μg/ml or Qt 35, 7.5, 15 μg/ml, showed a significant effect in inhibition of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

* With the same concentrations, AcE also expressed the ability to relax tracheal smooth muscle from A/J mice.

* Furthermore, with the concentrations of 100, 1000 mg/kg or 30 mg/kg Qt in Blomia tropicalis (BT)-sensitized A/J mice treated, AcE also decreased the total number of cells of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) in lungs, the markers found in patients with asthma.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "AcE and Qt have potential as antiasthmatic drugs, as they possess both immunomodulatory and bronchodilatory properties".

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of asthma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Prevent the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Induced by Oxidative Stress

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites are clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

The most common forms of Diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form of diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutations and viruses.

* Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of acquired diabetes in adulthood is a chronic condition that affects the body's metabolized glucose. In other words, most cases of type 2 diabetes are the result of insulin receptors clogged up by fat and cholesterol, leading to resisting the effects of the hormone insulin that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.

Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes.

At 10 μM, α-tocopherol increased the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α.

Furthermore, the concentration of 100 μM α-tocopherol exerted a lower expression of free radical catalase compared to the other concentrations.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "At a low concentration, α-tocopherol exerted good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on BMMCs" and

"Maintaining α-tocopherol at a low concentration might promote the recovery of BMMCs from oxidative stress".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes induced by oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by the speed-up of the life cycle of skin cells, leading to cells building up rapidly on the surface of the skin.

Symptoms of psoriasis caused by the extra skin cells from scales and red patches can be itchy and painful.

Epidemiologically, psoriasis patches can range from a few spots or large areas. The most common form of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, a condition that induces dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales.

The causes of psoriasis are not identified, however, researchers believed that genetic proposition exacerbated by certain factors such as weather, injury, illness, or stress are some of the most causative factors that induce the onset of the condition.

Certain risk factors such as family history, viral and bacterial infections, weakened immune systems, persistent stress, are associated with the risk of psoriasis.

Other risk factors associated with psoriasis may include skin injury that did not heal properly, people who are obese and side effects of long-term use of certain medicines such as oral steroids.

Some researchers suggested smoking that has a strong impact on the immune system may also be one of the major causes of psoriasis in smokers.

Conventionally, topical corticosteroids are the most commonly prescribed medication for the treatment of the condition, particularly in patients with mild to moderate psoriasis.


According to the joint study led by the University of Trieste, the increased incidence of a large number of diseases that share an inflammatory origin is probably due to the pro-inflammatory cytokine spillover from active psoriatic lesions, leading to a large inflammation on distant tissues(95).

Out of 12 articles identified in a total of 732 articles that were searched, some studies found that n-3 PUFAs were associated with improvements in the PASI score, erythema, scaling, itching, an area involved, and infiltration.

However, some studies did not find a reduction in scaling, erythema, area involved or thickness in the treatment group.

Based on the findings researchers said, "It is still inconclusive whether the use of n-3 PUFAs in patients with psoriasis is associated with improvements in the severity of psoriasis and other outcomes".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of psoriasis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Dr. Wang HY the lead researcher in the study said, "Vitexicarpin induces apoptosis.... via mitochondria(in regulated cell metabolism)-controlled apoptotic pathway".

In support of the above analysis, the crude extract prepared with ethanol from dried ripened Vitex agnus-castus fruits exerted strong cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines of human uterine cervical canal fibroblast (HCF), human embryo fibroblast (HE-21), ovarian cancer (MCF-7), cervical carcinoma (SKG-3a), breast carcinoma (SKOV-3), gastric signet ring carcinoma (KATO-III), colon carcinoma (COLO 201), and small cell lung carcinoma (Lu-134-A-H) cells.

The inhibition of the extract is attributed to the effect on cell death through apoptosis and increased intracellular oxidation in the tumor cells.

Other researchers suggested that the cytotoxic effects of Chaste tree berry may be involved various aspects, including the JNK (apoptosis) pathway. as indicated in the new native lignan VB6 study.

Moreover, sulforaphane also eliminated breast CSCs in vivo by inhibiting the tumor growth after the reimplantation of primary tumor cells into the secondary mice.

Additionally, sulforaphane also inhibited the expression of Wnt/beta-catenin associated with cellular functions like stem cell regeneration and organogenesis.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These findings support the use of sulforaphane for the chemoprevention of breast cancer stem cells".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed a high amount of SFN may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Scientists may have found an integrated form of exercise used combined with standard treatment in alcoholism, a joint study led by the Section of Epidemiology and Public Health Intervention Research (EPHIR), postulated.

In a study to examine 18 alcohol-dependent patients randomized received either treatment as usual or treatment as usual plus yoga has taken at baseline with six months follow-up for testing the effect of yoga therapy in reduced alcohol dependence, researchers filed the following results, after 10 weeks

1. Yoga was found to be a feasible and well-accepted adjunct treatment for alcohol dependence.

2. Yoga + conventional treatment showed a reduction in alcohol consumption from 6.32 to 3.36 drinks per day in comparison to other groups.

After taking into account other risk factors, researchers said, "Larger studies are needed to adequately assess the efficacy and long-term effectiveness of yoga as an adjunct treatment for alcohol dependence".

Other, in the study to evaluate the effect of a yoga intervention on alcohol and drug abuse behaviors in women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through analyzed data from a pilot randomized controlled trial in comparing a 12-session yoga intervention and control of women age 18 to 65 years with PTSD, researchers found that
1. Yoga intervention at the end of the period expressed a significantly lower mean score of Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) in comparison to control
2. Yoga group also demonstrated a reduction in symptoms and improved symptom management. in most participants
3. Yoga participants expressed interest in psychological treatment

The findings suggested that yoga may play a role in attenuating the symptoms of PTSD, reducing the risk of alcohol dependence, and promoting interest in evidence-based psychotherapy.

More importantly, in the reviews, the philosophical origins, current scientific evidence, and clinical promise of yoga and mindfulness as complementary therapies for addiction, researchers at the joint study led by the Manipal University, said, " theoretical models suggest that the skills, insights, and self-awareness learned through yoga and mindfulness practice can target multiple psychological, neural, physiological, and behavioral processes implicated in addiction and relapse".

Further analysis, researchers concerned, "the clinical effectiveness and hypothesized mechanisms of action underlying mindfulness-based interventions for treating addiction" and "..very few studies have been conducted on the specific role of yoga in treating or preventing addiction".


Taking all together, yoga intervention may play an important role used in conjunction with standard therapy in treating alcoholism.
