Herbal Ashwagandha, the Best Antioxidant Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition of imbalance of the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals in the body. In other words, the overproduction of free radicals accompanied by the decreased levels of antioxidants may cause cytotoxicity in the induction of oxidative stress.

Some researchers suggested long-term suppression by oxidative stress can activate the expression of over 500 different genes, including those for growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, cell cycle regulatory molecules,...

Oxidative stress-activated inflammatory pathways have been found to induce the transformation of cell DNA to cause cancer and, chronic diseases.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid, and cell DNA damage.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound that processes the antioxidant activity, researchers investigated the effects of Withania somnifera on copper-induced lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in the aging spinal cord of Wistar rats.

According to the tested differentiation, the application of Withania somnifera exerted a strong effect on the levels glutathione peroxidase (GPx) which were decreased significantly in the spinal cord from adult to aged mice.

Withania somnifera also successfully inhibited lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner through its antioxidant activity.

Furthermore, these effects were found to be similar to those of superoxide dismutase and mannitol.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results indicate the therapeutic potential of Withania somnifera in aging and copper-induced pathophysiological conditions".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

Navy Bean, the Anti-Hypertension Health Food

By Kyle J. Norton

High blood pressure or hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries. High blood pressure is also a condition in the cluster of metabolic syndrome that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

Although at the early stage, high blood pressure usually does not cause symptoms, some patients in extreme cases may experience dizziness and light head, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, flushing, chest pain, and visual changes.

Underlying medical conditions such as kidney disease and long-term stress are associated with high blood pressure.

More precisely, according to the American hypertension Association, long-term untreated high blood pressure can induce complications such as
* Heart attack is caused by damaged arteries due to high blood pressure that leads to blockage or limited blood flow to the heart muscle.

* Stroke, damaged blood vessels in the brain may be clogged and burst.

* Heart failure, high blood pressure increases the risk of enlarged-heart that limits the heart function in blood circulation

Conventional hypertensive medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects.

If you currently taking hypertensive medicine, please make sure you know all the side effects of the preventive measure.

Some researchers also found that excessive energy intake and obesity are major causes of hypertension.

Dr. Savica V, the lead author in the study "The effect of nutrition on blood pressure" wrote, "Obesity is associated with increased activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and sympathetic nervous systems, possibly other mineralocorticoid activity, insulin resistance, salt-sensitive hypertension, and excess salt intake, and reduced kidney function".

High sodium chloride intake strongly predisposes to hypertension".

"Increased alcohol consumption may acutely elevate blood pressure. High intakes of potassium, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and protein, along with exercise and possibly vitamin D, may reduce blood pressure".

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of hypertension, researchers investigated the inhibitory activities of the navy bean by preparation of navy bean milk (NBM) subjected to fermentation of four lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains, namely, Lactobacillus helveticus MB2-1, Lactobacillus plantarum B1-6, and Lactobacillus plantarum 70810.

According to the tested assays, all fermented NBM showed higher angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity compared to the unfermented ones.

By comparison of each strain, researchers found that 2 h, 3 h, and 5 h are the optimum fermentation periods for respectively L. plantarum 70810, L. plantarum B1-6 and L. bulgaricus.

Compared to the IC value without causing an intestinal disturbance, the extracts fermented by L. plantarum B1-6 exerted the lowest IC50 value of 21 ± 2.1 μg protein ml(-1).

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is a central component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which controls blood pressure by regulating the volume of fluids in the body.

In other words, the effect of LAB fermentation on the degradation of navy lean proteins and the capacity to release ACE inhibitory peptides may have a strong effect on the inhibition of hypertension.

Dr. Rui X, after taking other factors into account wrote, "The approach was promising to obtain probiotic products with the potential to serve as functional ingredients targeting hypertension".

Taken altogether, the fermented navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Inhibits the Depressive Symptoms Regardless of Serum of Oxidated-LDL/LDL

By Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a loved one, and illness.

Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

The mild case of depression can be defeated by a variety of self-care techniques. Others require the treatment of medication, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy that help to reduce and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.

The most common depressive symptoms are feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, loss of interest in daily activities, appetite or weight changes, sleep changes, anger or irritability, reckless behavior and loss of concentration.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

In other words, healthy blood cholesterol is any level with either less than or equal to 4 (low-density lipoprotein/ 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

According to the statistics, in 2015-2016, by age and gender, a total of 12.4 percent of adults aged 20 years and over had high cholesterol in the United States.

Lipoproteins are a general term of fat, cholesterol, and apolipoproteins, including the 2 most common forms of LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) and HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein).

Low-Density Lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol in the form of lipoprotein in which cholesterol is transported in the blood. High levels of low-density lipoprotein in the blood are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

Lipoprotein ratio is the calculation of total/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratios which are considered indicators with greater predictive value than isolated parameters used independently in the prediction of the risk of heart disease.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the effect of Omega 3 fatty acid on low-density lipoprotein on patients LDL with depression

The study included a total of 133 female workers in a hospital and nursing homes recruited in Japan.
According to the tested analysis, serum oxidated-LDL/LDL was positively connected with depressive symptoms but was more strongly related to perceived psychological stress.

Patients showed an increased serum of pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-6)  partly transmitted via ox-LDL/LDL with a positive correlation with depressive symptoms.

Serum ω3 PUFAsfound in the blood were inversely associated with depressive symptoms independently of IL-6 or ox-LDL/LDL.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the treatment of depressive symptoms regardless of the levels of the IL-6 or ox-LDL/LD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Kill Glioma Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

A glioma is a type of tumor that starts in the glial cells of the brain or the spine, comprising 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumors.

Heterogeneous tumor cells of glioma are the type of cancer associated with genetic alterations that occur in individual tumors originating in the same organ.

Primary glioblastoma is considered the most aggressive cancer. Cancer may arise de novo, meaning they begin as a Grade IV malignant glioma tumor with no evidence.

Due to the rapid growth of the tumor, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and severe headaches and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.

Radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

Believe it or not, gliomas have been found accounting for 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumors, and 80 percent of all malignant brain tumors.

Glioma can be classified into 3 types, including
* Astrocytomas are found in glial cells, star-shaped brain cells in the cerebrum called astrocytes. Most astrocytomas are localized.

* Ependymomas are cancers that grow in your brain or any part of the spine, including your neck and upper and lower back starting from the ependymal cells in the middle of your spinal cord and fluid-filled spaces in your brain.

* Oligodendrogliomas are cancers that begin on the oligodendrocytes of the brain or from a glial precursor cell.

The exact cause is unknown. Epidemiologically, age, exposure to radiation and family history are common risk factors that cause the onset of the disease,

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a most effective approach to glioma treatment, researchers examined the effects of a pH-sensitive core-shell nanoparticle (PDCP-NP) that targets the cancer stem cells (CSCs) and the differentiated tumor cells.

Where PDCP-NP is a cationic micellar core (Cur-M) that was first prepared from d-α-tocopherol-grafted-ε-polylysine polymer to encapsulate the hydrophobic curcumin, followed by dopamine-modified-poly-γ-glutamic acid polymer further deposited on its surface as an anion shell through pH-sensitive linkage to encapsulate the hydrophilic doxorubicin (DOX) hydrochloride with the control of the combinational Cur/DOX molar ratio at 3:1.

According to the analysis, PDCP-NP showed a ratiometric delivery capability to target cancer stem cells (CSCs) and the differentiated tumor cells in vitro and Vivo, compared to those of the cocktail Cur/DOX solution.

Treatment with PDCP-NP displayed a significantly decreased percentage of CSCs in tumors from 4.16% to 0.95%.

Based on the results, researchers said, " PDCP-NP may be a promising carrier for the combination therapy with drug candidates having dissimilar physicochemical properties".

Taken altogether, tocopherols used in a combination with other phytochemicals and chemo drugs may be considered an adjunct therapy for the treatment of glioma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Effects on Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

By Kyle J. Norton

Arthritis, one of the Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) degenerative disease, is a general term of joint inflammation, affecting over 21% of the US population.

There are over 100 different forms of arthritis and related diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is the common form of arthritis involved in chronic low-grade inflammation.

Juvenile arthritis is an inflammatory disease affecting the synovium in children aged 16 or younger.

In other words, it is an autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system attacking some of the body's own healthy cells and tissues, in this case, the immune system attacks the joint tissue in the juvenile.

Genes that are associated with the risk of juvenile idiopathic arthritis include HLA-A. HLA-B. HLA-DPB1. HLA-DQA1. HLA-DQB1. HLA-DRB1. IL2RA. IL6, according to the National Institute of Health.

According to the statistic, the most common form of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), affects over 50,000 children in the United States alone.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a type of arthritis associated with inflammation that affects mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the age of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many older adults.

According to the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

A cross-sectional population-based study of 1042 patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed that RA patients had an increased risk of death from various causes.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, scientists examined taraxasterol (TAR), a bioactive active compound pentacyclic triterpenes isolated from Chinese medicine herb Taraxacum officinale effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

In Vitro and Vivo, the application of TRA significantly suppressed the proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-6, and IL-8 by blocking NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasomes, activators of IL-1β secretion, particularly in the joints tissues of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice.

Furthermore, the application of TRA also inhibited the enzymes involved in the productions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), like MMP-1 and MMP-3 in HFLS-RA in vitro, degradation of the normal tissues.

Moreover, the injection of TRA also blocked nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation via modulating inhibitors of kappa B (IκB), IκB kinase (IKK) in the control of cytokines production and cell survival and transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) to prevent the accumulation of ROS, resulting in cell death and inflammation.

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol Exerts a Neuro-Protective Effect in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

Brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originated are not very common.

The function of the brain process a complex function, including control of our thoughts, memory, and speech, movement of the arms and legs,...

Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.

Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.

A neuron is a nerve cell that forms a building block of the nervous system.

Neuroblastoma is cancer developed by the immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body, mostly in and around the adrenal glands.

Cancer most commonly affects children age 5 or younger compared to less often in older children.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Net, approximately 800 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the United States.

And 90% of children affected by neuroblastoma are children younger than 5.

Sadly, the the-5-year survival rate of cancer is less than 50%.

The most common symptoms are totally depending on the area that has been affected including back pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, and bone pain.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of brain cancer, researchers evaluated the neuroprotective effects and action mechanism of Cirsium setidens (CSEA) and Aster scaber (ASEA) against H2O2-induced cell death of human brain neuroblastoma SK-N-SH cells.

According to the experimental and chemical analysis,
*The major phytochemicals isolated from CSEA and ASEA were found to be β-sitosterol, Dau, Pec, Ast, or isoquercitrin.

* Ethyl acetate fractions from Cirsium setidens (CSEA) and Aster scaber (ASEA) showed neuroprotective effects in SK-N-SH cells.

* Compared to β-sitosterol, pretreatment with Dau, Pec, or Ast showed protective effects against H2O2-induced cell death and inhibited ROS generation by oxidative stress to induce brain cell apoptosis.

In other words, all chemical compounds found in Cirsium setidens (CSEA) and Aster scaber (ASEA) work synergistically by inducing overexpression of free radicals to exert cytotoxicity against the tested cells.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol used in a combination with other chemical compounds may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of brain cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Protects the Neurons Against Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

By Kyle J. Norton

The central nervous system containing the brain and the spinal cord is the complex system of nerve tissues that controls the activities of the human body.

It is the center that controls our thoughts, the interpreter of our external environment, and body movement.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a condition caused by sudden damage to the brain due to a blow or jolt to the head.

Most cases of TBI are associated with car accidence and sports injuries.

The most common symptoms caused by TBI are the loss of consciousness induce-dazed, confusion or disorients, headache, dizziness or loss of balance, difficulty sleeping and the problem with speech

In severe cases, patients may also experience sensory problems, sensitivity to light or sound, memory or concentration problems, mood swings, and feeling depressed or anxious.

Conventionally, the treatment of TBI includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy. psychological and vocational counseling, cognitive therapy,... depending on the location of the injury.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with brain injury, researchers examined the effects of Astragali Radix (AR)-Radix Angelica Sinensis (RAS) activity on traumatic brain injury (TBI).

According to the chemical analysis, researchers discover that the effects of the combination against the traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be attributed to the 14 bioactive ingredients in AR-RAS, while 33 potential targets hit by these ingredients related to TBI.

The effectiveness of the combined herbal medicines according to the GO annotation analysis, was involved in the regulation of multiple biological processes by AR-RAS.

Additionally, 89 novel signaling pathways (P<0.05) were also found to underlie the effects of AR-RAS for TBI treatment.

According to the animal experiment, in vivo AR-RAS showed significantly induced tissue recovery and improved neurological deficits in the hippocampus of TBIrats on the 14th day.

More precisely, AR-RAS target the neurotrophin signaling pathways as a major related pathway to improve axonal growth.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Our work illuminates the "multi-compounds, multi targets, and multi pathways" curative action of AR-RAS in the treatment of TBI by network pharmacology".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica used alone or combined with Astragali Radix may be considered a functional herbal medicine for the treatment of traumatic brain injury,  pending a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
