Omega-3 Fatty Acids Process Anti-Mental Illness in Patients with Omega-3 Fatty Acid Deficiency

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurological disorders are a group of diseases associated with the neurons in the brain and spinal cord of the central nervous system.

The WHO in the evaluation of neurological disorders wrote, "Neurological disorders contribute to 92 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2005 projected to increase to 103 million in 2030 (approximately a 12% increase). While Alzheimer's and other dementias are projected to show a 66% increase from 2005 to 2030".

Where one DALY represents the loss of the equivalent of one year of full health.

Believe it or not, there are more than 600 diseases of the central nervous system, including brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, and stroke.

Mental illness is also known as mental health disorders associated with a wide range of mental health disorders, affecting all aspects of your psychological health, including mood, thinking, and behavior.

The most common mental illness in the Western world is depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and addictive behaviors.

There are many causes associated with the onset of mental illness, including severe psychological trauma suffered as a child, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, an important early loss, such as the loss of a parent, neglect, and poor ability to relate to others.

Medical conditions such as diabetes, a  history of mental illness in a blood relative, such as a parent or sibling, and stressful life situations are some of the prevalent factors that are involved in the onset of the diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of psychological illnesses, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on the prevention and treatment of mental illness.

According to the search of the studies from 1966 to December 2010 by comparing changes in symptoms, functioning, other outcomes, and/or side effects in patients treated with omega-3 fatty acids for mental illness, intake of omega-3 fatty acids showed strong activity against mental illness in patients diagnosed with an omega-3 fatty acid deficiency.

Furthermore, the application of omega 3 fatty acids also have a strong implication against specific psychiatric disorder.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of mental illness caused by omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Tocopherols, the Potential Treatment for Malaria

By Kyle J. Norton

Malaria, a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoans.

According to the statistic, malaria is one of the most common diseases in Nigeria, affecting over 97% of Nigeria's population. There are an estimated 100 million malaria cases with over 300,000 deaths per year.

Symptoms of malaria tend to occur in cycles, which correspond to the life cycle of the parasite. The most common symptoms include headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal discomforts including diarrhea.

In severe cases, patients with malaria may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath caused by fluid in the lungs and expanded abdomen caused by enlarged spleen hypoglycemia and liver diseases such as jaundice and low blood glucose.

Immune deficiency, pregnant women, newborn babies are prone to the disease if they are bitten by an infected mosquito.

Cerebral malaria is the most severe neurological complication of infection with Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

The condition is caused by coma and asexual forms of the parasite on peripheral blood smears.

Symptoms of cerebral malaria are fever, headache, body ache and progressively, delirium and coma.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with parasite infection, researchers examined the effect of α-TOS as an anti-malarial drug.

The study included selected C57BL/6J mice infected with P. yoelii 17XL and P. berghei ANKA, induced cerebral malaria (ECM), treated with several concentrations of α-TOS by intraperitoneal administration on 1, 3, 5, and 7 days post-infection (dpi).

According to the analysis, α-TOS treatment groups showed a significant decrease in parasitemia and improvement of the survival rate compared to a significant increase in mice infected with both parasites.

Furthermore, the intensity of Evans blue staining associated with plasma membrane damage on brains taken from α-TOS-treated mice was weaker than that of untreated mice.

In other words, α-TOS treatment exerted an inhibition of the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the progression of cerebral malaria.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These findings indicate that vitamin E derivatives like α-TOS might be a potential candidate for treatment drugs against malaria"

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the treatment of malaria, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), a Natural Anti-Colitis Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is medical a condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Depending on the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis, particularly in those associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis (UC).

* Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the inflammation of chronic inflammation of digestive tract associated with symptoms of severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss.

* Microscopic colitis is a disease involved in the inflammation of the colon or large intestine, associated with symptoms of watery diarrhea and cramping. Microscopic colitis is much less severe than other types of inflammatory bowel disease.

* Ischemic colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine caused by the injury-induced inadequate blood supply to the colon, leading to pain on the left side of the abdomen.

* Segmental colitis associated with diverticula is an inflammation that affects colonic luminal mucosa in segments due to diverticulosis, causing symptoms of bloody stools, sometimes accompanied by abdominal pain, cramping discomfort, or diarrhea.

* Radiation colitis is an inflammation of the large intestines in patients with radiation therapy, leading to symptoms of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.

* Diversion colitis is an inflammation of the large intestines as a complication of ileostomy or colostomy. Most cases of diversion colitis often occur within the year following the surgery.

* Eosinophilic colitis is a rare disease associated with a type of white blood cell, due to injury and inflammation to the large intestine.

* Behcet's colitis is chronic immune-mediated, inflammatory disorder that only affect the intestines but also the joints, skin, eyes, and biliary tracts

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases, scientists examined the taraxacum officinale extract (TOE) effects on colitis.

According to the results of DSS-induced colitis treated with different concentrations of TOE for 8 days, TOE showed significant activity in the attenuation of the clinical symptoms, by lowering the inflammatory scoring and inhibiting the levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6.

In other words, the efficacy of TOE in the treatment of colitis was associated with the activity in the induction of fatty acid degradation through the increased of the expression levels of Adh5, Aldh3a2, and Acox in breaking down fat and decreased the levels of CCL20, CCR6, and CXCL1 in cytokine-receptor signaling.

Additionally, TEO also enhanced the levels of S24-7 and adlercreutzia but decreased the number of anerostipes, Enterococcus, Enterobacteriaceae and peptostreptococcaceae to promote microbial imbalance or maladaptation

Based on the findings, researchers said, "TOE ameliorated DSS-induced colitis by regulating fatty acid degradation and microbial dysbiosis".

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection against colitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Fruits and Vegetables Intake Daily May be Potent Against the Risk of Hypertension

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension is a condition characterized by persistent high blood pressure.

In the US,  approximately, one-third of the adults have hypertension, affecting over 77 million people in the country.

Additionally, among adults age 20 and older in the United States, in the non-Hispanic whites community, 33.4 percent of men and 30.7 percent of women are infected by the syndrome.

Hypertension is a slowly developed condition. Unless the syndrome has caused damage to the blood vessel, otherwise symptoms cannot be detected.

The cause of hypertension is a result of the hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), due to the slow progression of plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) patients with blood pressure that is higher than 130 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) are considered to have hypertension.

Untreated hypertension may induce complications of heart attack, stroke, and other health conditions.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy dietary and lifestyle factors highlight the importance of environmental factors in the induction of hypertension onset and progression.

However, according to a special issue of the Journal of Human Hypertension primarily, in the concerns of dietary, lifestyle, and alternative factors in the risk of hypertension and blood pressure control, focusing on dietary and lifestyle factors, complementary and alternative approaches may have a strong impact in prevention and treatment of hypertension.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of high blood pressure, researchers examined the prospective association between baseline intake of fruits and vegetables and the risk of hypertension in a large cohort of middle-aged and older women.

Participants included in the study are 28,082 US female health professionals aged ≥39 years, free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and hypertension at baseline.

According to the dietary information collected using a validated FFQ, 13,633 women who developed incident hypertension occurred during 12.9 years of follow-up.

However, after adjustment for potential confounders, including age, race, and total energy intake, the hazard ratio and 95% CI of hypertension was 0.97  and 0.86 comparing women who consumed 2-<4, 4-<6, 6-<8, and ≥8 servings/day of total fruits and vegetables with those consuming <2 servings/day, even after additionally adjusting for lifestyle factors.

Furthermore, in the analysis of individual fruits and vegetables separately, researchers found that higher intake of all fruits but not all vegetables remained significantly associated with reduced risk of hypertension after adjustment for lifestyle and dietary factors.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Higher intake of fruits and vegetables, as part of a healthy dietary pattern, may only contribute a modest beneficial effect to hypertension prevention, possibly through improvement in body weight regulation".

Taken altogether, increased intake of fruits and certain vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Suppress Esophageal Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

An esophagus or gullet, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.

Esophageal cancer is not very uncommonly caused by malignant of the esophagus due to abnormal cell growth as a result of the DNA alternation of the cells that line the upper part of the esophagus or glandular cells presented at the lower part of the esophagus that connected with the stomach.

Esophageal cancer tends to spread if left untreated and starts from the lining of the esophagus, then later penetrates the wall of the esophagus and spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach, and the chest, then to the distant parts of the body.

The most common types of esophageal cancer are
* Squamous cancer
In the upper part of the esophagus caused by the squamous cell of which has become malignant caused by mutation of DNA in cells replication of division uncontrollably.

* Adenocarcinomas
In the lower part of the esophagus caused by the glandular cells of which have become malignant caused by mutation of DNA in cells replication of division uncontrollably.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 17,650 new esophageal cancer cases will be diagnosed, including 13,750 in men and 3,900 in women.

Also, in 2019, esophageal cancer will also cause the death of 16,080 Americans, including 13,020 in men and 3,060 in women.

The 5-year survival rate of people diagnosed in the local stage of esophageal cancer is 45%, much less than other cancer, including 100% of breast cancer.

The most common areas of metastasis of esophageal cancer are the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach, and chest.

Believe it or not, esophageal cancer is more common among men than among women. The lifetime risk of esophageal cancer in the US is 1 in 132 in men and about 1 in 455 in women.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the preventive activity of α-Tocopherol against esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

According to the analysis,
* Early-stage supplementation with α-Tocopherol significantly prevented esophageal carcinogenesis induced by N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA) in the ESCC rat model.

* In the Het-1A cell model, α-Tocopherol markedly suppressed cell proliferation, promoted cell cycle G2-phase arrest, and increased apoptosis by targeting cellular survival and growth.

* Furthermore, α-Tocopherol increased the expression of PPARγ in regulating cellular differentiation, and its downstream tumor suppressor PTEN.

Based on the results, researchers said, " These results were closely correlated with the ineffectiveness of α-Tocopherol in the late stage of ESCC carcinogenesis. Taken together, our study suggested that α-Tocopherol may serve as a PPARγ agonist for the chemoprevention of esophageal cancer".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for reducing the risk of esophageal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol Reduces the Risk of Liver Injury

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body, played an essential role in filtering blood from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body.

The organ also produced cholesterol, a waxy substance that is needed to aid digestion and build strong cell membranes, production of steroid hormones and vitamins.

Liver injury may be a result caused by physical impact or penetrating trauma. In some cases, liver injury can also be induced by toxicity, leading to acute liver injury.

Liver injury can be mild or severe. In a mild case, liver injury can recover itself. However, in severe cases. surgery to stop the bleeding and remove the part of injury may be necessary.

Most cases of liver injury can lead to abdominal pain and tenderness caused by bleeding blood in the abdomen that irritates the abdominal tissue.

The severity of a liver injury can be diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) or ultrasonography.

According to the statistics, liver injury has been found to constitute 5% of all traumas, making it the most common abdominal injury.

The most common symptoms associated with liver injury are shocks due to severe bleeding inducing a rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, and cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin.

In some cases, blood accumulated in the abdomen may irritate the abdominal tissue, leading to symptoms of abdominal pain and swelling, and tenderness.

Depending on the size of the wound, most cases of liver injury are healed by themselves. However, in severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary if the bleeding does not stop.

Out of many risk factors, an overdose of medicine has been found to be the number 1 factor involved in liver injury.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the hepatoprotective effects of Beta-sitosterol (Sit) and its derivatives on acute liver injury induced by lipopolysaccharide/d-galactosamine (LPS/GalN) in mice.
According to the chemical analysis,
* Among its derivatives, 2-naphthoyl Sit ester (Sit-N) (50 mg/kg) showed the strongest activities against acute liver injury.

* More precisely, Sit-N significantly decreased the serum activity of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) associated with liver injury

* Sit-N also markedly reduced tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels involved in liver inflammation.

* Sit-N drastically improved the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and catalase (CAT) and suppressed the expression of malondialdehyde (MDA), liver oxidative stress marker by increasing the expression of nuclear respiratory factor2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1).

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention of liver injury, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetables Protect the Stomach Against Stomach Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

Localized stomach cancer has a 5-year survival rate of 68%. However, If cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 31%.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding potential and natural foods for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers investigated the risk of regular cruciferous vegetable intake on stomach cancer.

The hospital-based, case-control study conducted at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY, included 292 stomach cancer patients and 1168 cancer-free controls recruited between 1992 and 1998 as part of the Patient Epidemiology Data System (PEDS).

According to the dietary and other epidemiologic and confounding variables collected by the questionnaire, there were strong inverse associations between stomach cancer and the highest versus lowest intakes of total cruciferous vegetables with the odds ratio (OR) of 0.59.

In the comparison test assay, raw cruciferous vegetables have an OR = 0.53, compared to raw broccoli with an OR = 0.61, raw cauliflower with an OR = 0.51, and Brussels sprouts with an OR = 0.66.

Increased portions of total cruciferous vegetable intake are associated linearly to a reduced risk of stomach cancer.

After taking other factors into account, researchers wrote, "These data suggest that consuming raw cruciferous vegetables may be associated with a lower odds of stomach cancer, even after considering other dietary characteristics".

Taken altogether, dietary cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of stomach cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
