#Garlic Improves #Fertility by Restoring the #Testosterone-Induced Antioxidant #Enzymes and Decreased #LipidPeroxidation in Males

Recent studies conducted by some academic institutes suggested that garlic may have the potential in modified the levels of serum testosterone in the blood, depending on over or under-expressions.

The sex hormone testosterone plays an essential role in male reproductive physiology, including the testes, a primary productive organ in the production of spermatozoa and reproductive hormones.

Furthermore, the male steroid hormone also processes a specific function in building bone and muscle mass as well as stimulating sexual desire in both sexes.

In women, testosterone is produced by the ovaries in women in a small amount. The hormone is also produced in small quantities by the adrenal glands in both sexes.

Truly, overexpression of testosterone may cause reduced production of antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) by natural antioxidant enzymes and increased presence of free radicals in the body, which can lead to cytotoxicity and weaken the function of the immune system.

In other words, abnormally high levels of testosterone in the blood can alter the balance of the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals in the body, leading to free radicals in the induction of oxidative stress, a primary cause of chronic ailments.

Some researchers suggested that the overproduction of testosterone may associate with an increase in the risk of prostate cancer, caused by oxidative stress effects in the prostate gland.

On the other hand, underexpression of testosterone may induce symptoms of erectile dysfunction, reduced sperm count and sperm quality, decreased libido or sexual activity, infertility, reduced muscle mass...... and increased body fat.

According to the Catholic University of The Sacred Heart, hypogonadism in men also reduced the production of natural antioxidants that also lead to oxidative stress, related to augmented cardiovascular risk(8).

In immune response, low levels of testosterone may increase the immune production of white blood cells that protect the body against infection. However, a prolonged period of low levels of testosterone can also lead to long-term overproduction of white blood cells, a leading cause of autoimmune diseases.

Garlic may be the next generation of natural testosterone reducers or inducers. Garlic increases the production of the hormone when it is low and inhibits excessive testosterone when it is high.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belongings to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia.

The herb or food has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure, cholesterol, natural antibiotic, etc.

Dr. Prasad S led the research at the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, diallyl sulfide (DAS), a constituent of garlic, exerted antioxidant activities against testosterone-induced oxidative stress in male Swiss albino mice, by significantly restoring the testosterone-induced antioxidant enzymes and decreased lipid peroxidation.

The effects of garlic supplementation on protein metabolism also suggested that dietary supplementation with 0.8 g/100 g garlic alters hormones associated with protein anabolism by increasing testicular testosterone and decreasing plasma corticosterone in rats fed a high-protein diet.

In the concerns of conventional medicine adriamycin (ADR), a potent cytotoxic drug that causes many adverse effects on different body organs, researchers at the Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University conducted an experience to evaluate the effect of aged garlic extract (AGE) when it is used combination with adriamycin (ADR).

At the end of the study, the researcher found that aged garlic extract (AGE), a garlic preparation, AGE can be used as an adjuvant therapy to resume male infertility and weak spermatogenesis induced by cytotoxic drugs or other environmental toxins through its cytoprotective and antioxidant properties.

In fact, like all-natural phytochemicals, garlic is both a testosterone booster and testosterone reducer, depending on the levels of testosterone in the body and the amount of garlic intake.

However, the use of garlic extracts and supplements should be taken with care, as overdoses may induce liver toxicity.
