#Cabbage Microgreens Lowers Circulating LDL Levels and Reduces Liver Cholesterol Ester, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.
The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances forms plaque, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults aged 20 and

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefit from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Believe it or not, about half of U.S. adults (55%, or 43 million) are currently taking medicine associated with lower blood cholesterol.

There are many risk factors that cause the onset of hyperlipidemia, such as people with diabetes, overweight gain, physical activity, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades may be one of the silent causes of hyperlipidemia in the Western world.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

In findings a natural whole for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers examined the effectiveness of microgreens in affecting lipid and cholesterol levels.

The study included C57BL/6NCr mice (n = 60, male, 5 weeks old) induced obesity (DIO) model were randomly assigned to six feeding groups: (1) low-fat diet; (2) high-fat diet; (3) low-fat diet + 1.09% red cabbage microgreens; (4) low-fat diet + 1.66% mature red cabbage; (5) high-fat diet + 1.09% red cabbage microgreens; (6) high-fat diet + 1.66% mature red cabbage for 8 weeks.

According to the results of the differentiation
* Microgreen supplementation attenuated high-fat diet-induced weight gain.

* Furthermore, supplementation with microgreens significantly lowered circulating LDL levels in animals fed the high-fat diet and reduced hepatic cholesterol ester.

* Moreover, the levels of triacylglycerol levels and expression of inflammatory cytokines in the liver were also inhibited by dietary microgreens.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested that microgreens can modulate weight gain and cholesterol metabolism and may protect against CVD by preventing hyperlipidemia.

Taken altogether, cabbage processes anti-hyperlipidemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
