Oral cancer is a type of cancer associated with any malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva), and the roof of the mouth (palate).
Most cases of oral cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of oral tissue.
However, at the advanced stage, oral cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 51,540 people were diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. The disease causes the death of an estimated 10,030 people.
The 5-year survival rate of oral cancer is 66%, including all stages.
Family history, smoking, alcohol drinking, infection by the HPV virus, poor hygiene, and genetic preposition are some of the risk factors associated with the disease.

The most common types of oral cancer are
* Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of oral cancer accounting for over 90% of all cases and arises from the squamous cell layer in the lining of the oral cavity and oropharynx.
* Verrucous carcinoma
The low-grade and rarely-spread verrucous carcinoma accounts for only approximately 5% of all cases. Cancer can spread deeply into the surrounding tissue.
* Minor salivary gland cancers
Cancer originated from the salivary gland and accounted for less than 1% of all cases.
* Furthermore, despite the lower potency, α-tocopherol compared to Cisplatin showed signs of apoptosis associated with the shrinkage of cells and appearance of apoptotic bodies.
* Moreover, α-tocopherol demonstrated cell cycle arrest by inducing the high accumulation of cells in the G0/G1 phase.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, seed or nut oils, etc.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of malignant tumors researchers examined the effect of α-tocopherol against oral cancer.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of malignant tumors researchers examined the effect of α-tocopherol against oral cancer.
According to the analysis,
* In vitro, α-tocopherol exhibited the effective antitumor activity on Oral SquamousCarcinoma Cells ORL-48 at 2.5 ± 0.42 µg/mL, compared to Cisplatin exhibited stronger activity at 1.0 ± 0.15 µg/mL.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Both cisplatin and α-tocopherol displayed cell cycle arrest at the Sub G0 phase. α-tocopherol thus showed potential as an antitumor agent for the treatment of oral cancer and merits further research".
Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.
