Chickpeas Increase the Function of Bowel Health, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Garbanzo bean is also known as chickpea, an edible legume of genus Cicer and the family Fabaceae, high in protein and minerals. It is one of the earliest cultivated vegetables, native to the Middle East.

According to the University of Tasmania, diet not only affects food choice, satiety but also has a profound influence on bowel health. 15 participants. who participated in the study tended to eat more processed snack foods (high energy, low fiber) after ceasing chickpea consumption(1).

In 27 free-living adults followed two randomized, crossover dietary interventions each of five weeks duration, Dr. Pittaway JK and research team said,"... significant decrease in serum TC and LDL-C during the chickpea diet compared to the equivalent fiber wheat diet was partly due to unintentional changes in macronutrient intake occurring because of chickpea ingestion"(2).

The effect of chickpea in the promotion of bowel health may be the result of a high amount of dietary fiber found in the peas. The study of the effectiveness of probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary fiber in the treatment of FGD in the pediatric population, suggested that the administration of a fiber supplement is more effective than a placebo for the treatment of childhood constipation(3).

In fact, Fiber undergoes partial or total fermentation after conscription in the distal small bowel and colon leading to the production of short-chain fatty acids and gas, thereby affecting gastrointestinal function and sensation, the University of Michigan Health System, insisted(4).

Taking all together, people who eat a portion of chickpea every day may improve gastrointestinal function, regardless of the type of diet.

Cruciferous Vegetables, the Anti-Hyperlipidemic Functional Foods

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.

According to statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances form plague, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to parts of the body.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

The healthy ratio of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is ant numbers that are less than 4.

In a healthy individual, the bad cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can induce an unhealthy ratio of bad and good cholesterol, leading to bad cholesterol remaining in the bloodstream, a cause of hyperlipidemia.

Overexpression of bad cholesterol has been found to facilitate the plaque accumulated in the arterial wall, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding potential and natural foods for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers investigated the protective effect of Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) on hyperlipidemia zebrafish larvae and early life stage toxicity of I3C on zebrafish embryos/larvae.

The study included Zebrafish larvae fed with a 4% high-cholesterol diet (HCD) before treatment of I3C 2.5μmol/L and 5μmol/L for two weeks.

According to the results of the tested assays, I3C treated groups showed a decrease of lipid deposition on the vasculature in a dose-dependently, compared to the control group.

I3C inhibited lipid deposition by inducing autophagy was attributed to the enhancement of the networks associated with the regulation of autophagy and apoptosis.

I3C also suppressed the levels of proteins and pathways involved in the regulation of cell growth, cell proliferation, cell motility, cell survival, protein synthesis, autophagy, and transcription, such as Bcl-2, Akt, p- Akt, mTOR, and p- mTOR.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "I3C shows protective effects on hyperlipidemia zebrafish larvae and maybe a promising multitarget drug in the prevention and protection against atherosclerotic".

Taken altogether, dietary cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols in the prevention of Chronic Epilepsy

By Kyle J. Norton

Epilepsy is a condition of a neurological disorder caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain inducing sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance and convulsions.

A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain induced the changes to patients' behavior, movements or feelings, and levels of consciousness.

Patients with have two or more seizures or a tendency to have recurrent seizures are considered to have epilepsy.

Believe it or not, seizures have been found associated with a stroke, a closed head injury, an infection such as meningitis or another illness.

However, most cases of seizure have unknown causes.

The most common symptoms of seizure are temporary confusion, uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs, loss of consciousness or awareness and cognitive or emotional symptoms, such as fear, and anxiety.

The seizure has also been found to induce complications such as failing, car accidents due to loss control, pregnancy complications, and emotional health problems such as depression and anxiety.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of symptoms of epilepsy, researchers examined the effect of Tocotrienol activity on seizure-triggered maladaptive neural plasticity and neuroinflammation that occur during the latent period as a key underlying event in epilepsy chronicization.

According to the analysis, α-tocopherol (α-T) reduced hippocampal neuroglial activation and neurodegeneration in the rat model of kainic acid (KA)-induced status epilepticus (SE).

Furthermore, α-T-treated epileptic rats, * showed to increase the number of population spikes elicited by pyramidal neurons, and recovered the latency to the onset of epileptiform-like network activity compared to control levels; (

* Prevented the neuronal death.

* Protected the blood-brain barrier protein by fully reversed the decrease of claudin,

* Inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and exhibited anti-inflammatory cytokines against neuroinflammation.

* Modulated the Genes associated with blood cell development in the hippocampus

Collectively, researchers said, "These findings support the potential of a timely intervention with α-T in the clinical management of SE to reduce epileptogenesis, thus preventing chronic epilepsy development".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement or improvement of bone collagen formation against the risk of osteoporosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), the Hepatoprotective Functional Herb

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Furthermore, the liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body.

The hepatoprotective effect is the action of the prevention of the liver against liver damage or toxicity.

There is no single cause of liver diseases. Researchers suggested that virus such as hepatitis A, B, C, long-term excessive alcohol drinking and genetic mutation inherited from the parents is the major risk factors associated with the early onset of the diseases.

Some researchers suggested overweight and obesity and congenital diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease also are the prevalent risk factors of liver damage and diseases.

Liver damage and disease can also be caused by long-term intake of certain medications, such as paracetamol and Illegal drugs such as cocaine.

Sadly, the mortality rate infected by viral hepatitis has increased by 63% from 890,000 in 1990 to 1.45 million in 2013, according to a review of data collected in 183 countries.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver injury, scientists examined the hepatoprotective activity of T. Officinale leaf extract against Acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatotoxicity.

According to the tested results, T. officinale decreased the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance levels and prevent the decrease in sulfhydryl levels induced by 200 mg/kg APAP (p.o.).

Histopathological alterations, and increased levels of liver stress markers such as serum aspartate and alanine aminotransferases caused by APAP, were also inhibited by the application of T. Officinale at the doses of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/mL.

Moreover, T. Officinale extracts also enhanced the antioxidant and scavenger activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and nitric oxide radicals.

Collectively, researchers said, "hepatoprotective effect of T. Officinale against the toxicity induced by APAP. The possible mechanisms involved include its scavenger activities against ROS and reactive nitrogen species, which are attributed to the content of phenolic compounds in the extract".

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection of the liver functioning, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Protects the Liver and Kidney Against Injury Caused by Inflammatory Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in the stimulation of the production of inflammatory cytokines with an aim to protect our body against infectious agents in the acute phase of bodily injury and tissue damage.

Inflammation cancer classified into
*Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nerves system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

On the other hand, the kidneys are a pair of kidney-shaped organs located on either side of your spine with a function to filter out the wastes from the blood before passing the wastes through urinary secretion.

More than a detoxed organ, the kidneys also maintain the body fluid balance, regulate the production of red blood cells and high blood pressure.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with inflammatory injury, researchers examined the effects of Angelica Sinensis on its effects on liver and kidney injury in an animal model.

The study included mice that were subjected to hypodermic injection with D-gal (200 mg/kg) and orally gavaged with AS (20, 40, or 80 mg/kg) once a day for 8 successive weeks.

According to the tested analysis, AS significantly showed a strong improvement in the liver and kidney function, assessed by organ index and functional parameters.

Furthermore, AS pretreatment effectively ameliorated the histological deterioration caused by the injection of D-gal.

Moreover, the application of AS  attenuated the MDA stress marker levels in the kidney and liver by enhancing the activities and gene expressions of antioxidative enzymes produced by the host.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with kidney and liver toxicity caused by the injection of D-gal-mediated such as iNOS, COX-2, IκBα, p-IκBα, and p65 were also attenuated by the AS, accompanied by the promoting of a protein involved in the regulation of proinflammatory expression in both hepatic and renal tissues.

Based on the results, researchers said, "AS pretreatment could effectively guard the liver and kidney of mice against D-gal-induced injury, and the underlying mechanism was deemed to be intimately related to attenuating oxidative response and inflammatory stress".

Taken altogether, herbal Angelica may be considered a remedy, for the protection of the liver and kidney against inflammatory stress. pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol Blocks the Onset of Lung Inflammation

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' needs and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Respiratory disease is a medical condition that affects the breathing organ and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, such as obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves,....... and muscles breathing.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease, affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.

According to the American academy, allergy, asthma, and immunology, about 1 in 10 children (10%) had asthma and 1 in 12 adults (8%) had asthma in 2009. (about 25 million, or 8% of the U.S. population).

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms that participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Epidemiologically, diseases associated with chronic inflammation are asthma, chronic peptic ulcer, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis, inflammatory bowel inflammatory disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), sinusitis, and hepatitis.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), and other prescription NSAIDs.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the inhibitory effects of beta-sitosterol (BS) and lactose-BS (L-BS) on the pathophysiological process in ovalbumin-induced asthmatic mice.

According to the chemical analysis, beta-sitosterol (BS) and lactose-BS (L-BS) showed a significant activity to decrease the total cells and eosinophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and the ROS production compared to the asthma control.

In other words, beta-sitosterol (BS) and lactose-BS (L-BS) inhibited the expression of immune response that induces inflammation through their anti-inflammatory expression.
More precisely, both L-BS and BS mitigated the inflammation by eosinophil infiltration and mucus hypersecretion by goblet hyperplasia.

Furthermore, L-BS and BS inhibited the increased mRNA and protein expression of IL-4 and IL-5, the pro-inflammatory proteins in the lung tissue and BAL fluid, respectively.

In comparison essays, L-BS were superior to those of BS, including the inhibition of Ovalbumin-specific IgE in the BAL fluid.

Moreover, L-BS blocked the survival rate of the splenocytes of the mice compared to the BS group and control.

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of lung inflammation, particularly in patients with asthma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bilberry, The Herbal Medicine for Reducing Risk and Treatment of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a type of noninflammatory fatty liver disease caused by fat accumulated in the liver other than excessive alcohol consumption.

People who have an accumulation of triglycerides within hepatocytes that exceeds 5% of liver weight are considered to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

According to the statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has risen rapidly over the past few decades and become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the developing world. The disease affects between 17-30% of the population in Western countries and 2-4% worldwide.

Epidemiologically. obesity, type II diabetes, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance are the well-known primary causes of NAFLD.

The findings strongly suggested that NAFLD is a geographically related disease associated with dietary patterns.

Dr. Alanna McCarthy, the lead scientist in the examination of diet patterns in the risk NAFLD wrote, "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a serious consequence of high-fat diet intake and currently affects approximately one-third of the world’s entire population".

And, "Recent evidence suggests that patients with NAFLD have a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease compared to the general population. However, little is known about the link between NAFLD and pathological cardiac remodeling leading to heart disease".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find natural prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), researchers investigated the effects of anthocyanin supplementation on insulin resistance and liver injury biomarkers in patients.

74 subjects with NAFLD included in the study were divided into 2 groups in this double-blind, randomized study. Patients received either purified anthocyanin (320 mg/d) derived from bilberry and black currant or a placebo for 12 weeks.

During the experiment, the anthocyanin group exhibited significantly decreased in plasma alanine aminotransferase, cytokeratin-18 M30 fragment, and myeloperoxidase, the biomarkers associated with NAFLD, compared to controls.

Compared to the baseline, the anthocyanin group significantly decreased in fasting blood glucose and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, however, these differences were not significant relative to placebo controls.

Not surprisingly, anthocyanin supplementation significantly decreased the 2-hour loading glucose level compared to control, according to the oral glucose tolerance test.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "A 12-week supplement of purified anthocyanin improved insulin resistance, indicators of liver injury, and clinical evolution in NAFLD patients".

Furthermore, according to the results from the study of ApoE(∗)3Leiden mice fed a Western-type cholesterol-containing diet without (HC) or with 0.1% (w/w) Mirtoselect (HCM), an anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract for 20weeks on diet-induced NASH, Mirtoselect treatment group showed an attenuated HC-induced hepatic steatosis and reduced hepatic cholesteryl ester content.

Furthermore, injection of Mirtoselect also exerted local anti-inflammatory effects in the liver by reduced inflammatory cell clusters and neutrophil infiltration in HCM.

In other words, HCM protected the liver against HC diet significantly induced hepatic expression of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic genes associated with the onset of NAFLD.

Dr. Morrison MC, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote, "Mirtoselect attenuates the development of NASH, reducing hepatic lipid accumulation, inflammation, and fibrosis, possibly mediated by local anti-inflammatory effects associated with reduced accumulation and crystallization of intrahepatic free cholesterol".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, pending the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
