The Effects of Omega -3 on Hypercholesterolemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

The cause of hypercholesterolemia is a result of overexpression of low-density lipoprotein with reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein in the blood.

Believe it or not, cholesterol produced by the liver or from outside sources is essential for the building of the strong cell membranes, the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D.

Compared to hypercholesterolemia, the healthy levels of LDL/HDL are any numbers that are less than 4.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with hyper-cholesterol, researchers examined the effects of omega-3-acid ethyl esters (POM3, 4 g/day) versus placebo (soy oil) on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and other aspects of the fasting lipid profile.

The double-blind, randomized crossover study included 31 men and women with primary, isolated hypercholesterolemia (LDL-C 130-220 mg/dL and triglycerides less than 150 mg/dL while free of lipid-altering therapies).

According to the results of the experiment,
* POM3 produced a modest increase from baseline in LDL-C (3.4%) versus the placebo response (-0.7%, P = 0.010).

* POM3 significant changes (P < 0.05) the levels of very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-18.8%), triglycerides (-18.7%), and HDL-C (3.3%).

* Most importantly, very-low-density lipoprotein particle concentration and size and HDL particle concentration decreased significantly more with POM3 versus placebo, whereas LDL and HDL particle sizes increased significantly more with POM3 versus placebo.

* Total cholesterol, non-HDL-C, apolipoproteins A1 and B, and LDL particle concentration responses did not differ between treatments

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These results did not confirm the hypothesis that POM3 treatment would lower LDL-C in primary, isolated hypercholesterolemia. Effects on other variables were consistent with prior results in mixed dyslipidemia".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols, the Potential Anti-Esophageal Cancer Plantbased Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

An esophagus or gullet, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.

Esophageal cancer is not very uncommon caused by malignant of the esophagus due to abnormal cell growth as a result of the DNA alternation of the cells that line the upper part of the esophagus or glandular cells that are present at the lower part of the esophagus connected with the stomach.

Esophageal cancer tends to spread if it left untreated and starts from the lining of the esophagus, then later penetrates the wall of the esophagus and spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach and the chest, then to the distant parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 17,650 new esophageal cancer cases will be diagnosed, including 13,750 in men and 3,900 in women.

Also, in 2019, esophageal cancer will also cause the death of 16,080 Americans, including 13,020 in men and 3,060 in women.

The 5-year survival rate of people diagnosed in the local stage of esophageal cancer is 45%, much less than other cancer, including 100% of breast cancer.

The 2 common types of esophageal cancer are
* Adenocarcinomas are the most common type of esophageal cancer in the United States, occurred in the mucus-forming gland cells in the lower part of the esophagus.

* Squamous cancer occurs in the flat, thin cells that line the surface of the upper part of the esophagus.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the effect of dietary tocopherols on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

According to the analysis, dietary tocopherols significantly inhibited the onset of esophageal carcinogenesis by inhibiting the activation of protein (NF-κB) in the stimulation of the expression of genes involved in the antiapoptotic activity.

Furthermore, dietary tocopherols also interact with the innate and adaptive immunity to inhibit the ESCC by N-Nitroso-N-methyl benzylamine )NMBA) in murine models.

Moreover, the dietary supplementation with 0.15% α-tocopherol (α-T), δ-tocopherol (δ-T), or γ-tocopherol rich mixture (γ-TmT) markedly suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the levels of induction of CXCR3+ effector T cells (CD4+ Th1 and CD8+ CTLs) infiltration involved in T cell trafficking and function, especially at the early stage of carcinogenesis.

Based on the results, scientists said, " tocopherols decrease carcinogenesis through inhibiting NF-κB and CXCR3 signaling, as well as related inflammation in early premalignant lesions. This pathway may offer a novel target for chemoprevention of esophageal cancer".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the prevention of esophageal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cayenne Pepper in Reducing the Risk of Metabolic Dysregulation

By Kyle J. Norton

Cayenne pepper may be the next herbal medicine in reduced risk and treatment of metabolic dysregulation, a recent study suggested

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum Annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to subtropical and tropical regions. It has been used in traditional medicine to increase metabolism, enhance the circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

Metabolic dysregulation refers to abnormal function of the body in regulation of glucose tolerance, fasting glucose, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia,...., leading to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease.

Capsaicin, the major chemical compound used in dietary supplements attenuated metabolic dysregulation in genetically obese diabetic mice by enhancing expression of modulation of glucose and lipid metabolism involving its receptors.

In obesity-induced inflammation and the development of obesity-related metabolic disorders, cayenne capsaicin suppressed inflammatory responses in inducing glucose intolerance and enhancing fatty acid oxidation in fat tissues, affecting insulin resistance.

The chemical compound involvement in reduced visceral adipose fat, also lowered serum levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, probably through limited fat accumulation in adipose tissues and reduced inflammation, and increased insulin sensitivity.

Dr. Leung FW. said," Clinical evidence supports the role of capsaicin as an anti-obesity agent. Both oral and gastrointestinal exposure to capsaicin increase satiety and reduce energy and fat intake and reduction in visceral abdominal fat" and "Thermogenesis and lipid metabolism-related proteins are altered upon capsaicin treatment in white adipose tissue".

Intake of cayenne for weight loss treatment-induced reduction in visceral abdominal fat may also improve metabolic regulation. Quality of doses should only be given by specialists to prevent toxicity.

Papaya, a Potential Food for the Treatment of Anemia, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole fruit for the treatment of anemia with no side effects, according to studies.

Anemia is a medical condition associated with a lack of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood.

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common anemia, caused by poor iron levels in the blood, leading to the reduced delivery of oxygen throughout your body.

There are many risk factors involved in the onset of the condition. Blood loss, such as from heavy menstrual bleeding, an ulcer, cancer, and regular use of some over-the-counter pain relievers, especially aspirin are some of the most common prevalent risk factors.

People with a long-term deficiency of folate and vitamin B-12 which play a critical role in the production of healthy red blood cells are also at an increased risk of Amenia.

Also, people with the mutated gene inherited from the parent are at substantial risk of the disease. the Duliajan College study suggested that certain genes such as the βE-Globin Gene is associated with the onset of anemia.

Dr. SK Sharma, the lead scientists in examine the anemia in the Indian population surprisingly found that there is a high prevalence of anemia among children (78.9%), ever-married women (56.2%), pregnant women (57.9%), and never-married men (24.3%) in India.

The doctor continued after observing the levels of hemoglobin in the tested subjects, " Association of the lower level of hemoglobin,...., was observed in subjects carrying the βE-globin gene. The mean (± SD) hemoglobin levels of the subject with heterozygous and homozygous state of HbE was 10.9 ± 0.95 and 9.7 ± 0.64 g/dL, respectively, against 11.28 ± 1.42 g/dL observed in normal hemoglobin pattern (Hb AA)".

These results clearly stated that amenia may be a genetic preposition-related disease that can be reversed in some people.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of anemia, with no side effect, researchers at the Covenant University, examined the papaya anti-anemia effect in subjects with sickle cell disease (SCD)

Sickle cell disease (SCD)is a genetic disease caused by an individual inheriting an allele for sickle cell hemoglobin from both parents. The disease is associated with the unusual production of a large number of immature blood cells.

Application of Carica papaya seed oil (Cari-oil) showed significant effects in reducing the levels of sickle blood cells compared with that of untreated SCD patients.

RBCs in Cari-oil treated samples were significantly higher (P < 0.05) compared with VerMyg, antisickling plant-treated samples.

The Cari-oil extract significantly reduced (P < 0.05) lactate dehydrogenase activity, in both in male (HbSSM) and female (HbSSF) human sickle cell blood.

Lactate dehydrogenase activity, LDH consistently increased in patients with anemia.
Furthermore, Cari-oil treated HbSSM and HbSSF blood had significantly increased (P < 0.05) peroxidase activity which was a significant decrease in patients with anemia, compared with controls.

Dr. the lead scientist suggested at the end of the experiment, "Methanolic extracts from... C. papaya seed oil exhibited antisickling properties coupled with the potential to reduce stress in sickle cell patients".

Moreover, in patients with beta-thalassemia major and intermedia and E-beta-thalassemia, researchers found that by ameliorating oxidative stress in red blood cells, the disease may be treatable.

In vitro and in vivo, oral administration of FPP to beta-thalassemia mice (50 mg/mouse/day for 3 months) and to patients (3 g x 3 times/day for 3 months), reduced all the above-mentioned parameters of oxidative stress (p < 0.001 in mice and p < 0.005 inpatients).

The results suggested that FPP, as a potent antioxidant, might alleviate symptoms associated with oxidative stress in severe forms of thalassemia.

In human studies, injection of fermented papaya preparation (FPP) on two groups of beta-thal patients: beta-thal, major and intermedia, (in Israel) and E-beta-thal (in Singapore) increased the production of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and significantly decreased the levels of ROS.

In other words, fermented papaya preparation (FPP) increased the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells (RBC), and decreased their reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, membrane lipid peroxidation, and externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS), indicating amelioration of their oxidative status, without a significant change in the hematological parameters.

The finding in human studies indicated it is possible that a longer duration of treatment, probably with the addition of an iron chelator, is required in order to achieve a significant change in the hematological parameters.

Taken altogether, Papaya, particularly in fermentation, may be considered functional for the prevention and treatment of anemia with no side effects.

Broccoli Processes Anti-Metastatic Activities in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth on the tissue of the specific organ.

Most cases of invasive cancer can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Institue, between n 2011–2015, the number of new cases of cancer is 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases).

The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year.

Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process without even notice, every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.

Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells to other organs and tissues, via the lymph system or bloodstream.

In other words, cancer cell metastasis is the process that cancer cells break away from the primary site and travel through the blood or fluid circulation and form new tumors (metastatic tumors) in other parts of the body, similar to those of primary cancer.

Anti-metastasis is an action in which substances or substances are used including herbal medicine to stop the cancer cell to infect other healthy tissues a distance away from the primary tumor.

Most cancer drugs used in conventional medicine with the ability to block the migration of cancer cells are considered process antimetastatic activity.

In other words, anti-metastasis drugs are agents that interfere with all modes of cancer cell migration, compared to conventional cytostatic drugs involved in blocking cancer cell proliferation.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential whole food for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the anti-metastatic activities of purified polysaccharides (BCE-I, -II, and -III) in broccoli, polysaccharides (BCE-I, -II, and -III) isolated by fractionation of broccoli enzyme extracts and subsequent ethanol precipitation.

Where BCE-I mainly consisted of galactose and arabinose, whereas BCE-II mainly consisted of galacturonic acid and rhamnose, and BCE-III mainly consisted of rhamnose and galactose.

According to the tested results
* BCE-I exerted the greatest effect to inhibit the cancer activity by increasing the pro-inflammatory expressions such as the tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-12, and IL-6 compared to the II and III.

* Intravenous (i.v.) administration of BCE-I promoted the cytotoxic activity of natural killer (NK) cells on YAC-1 tumor cells significantly and dose-dependently in an ex vivo experiment of NK cell activity.

* In the experimental model using lung metastasis of Colon26-M3.1 carcinoma cells, prophylactic i.v. and oral administration of BCE-I also significantly inhibited lung metastatic activity in a dose-dependent manner.

* Moreover, the efficacy of BCE-I against lung metastasis was totally dependent on the presence of NK cell function.

Collectively, researchers said, "BCE-I has potent antitumor metastatic activity, and that its anti-metastatic activity has relevance to the stimulation of NK and other immune cells".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cancer spreading, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Processes Diuretic Property

By Kyle J. Norton

The diuretic effect is the activity of substances that promote urinary secretion.

Diuretics medicines are used for the treatment of water retention or edema by removing fluids from the body.

Water retention or edema is a condition of excess fluids that build up inside your body, including the circulatory system or within tissues and cavities.

Edema can cause swelling in the hands, feet, ankles, and legs.

Many diuretics medicine can interfere with the functioning kidney in the regulation of the levels of water in the body, leading to worsening kidney function and abnormal electrolyte levels.

Certain medications that treat conditions of high blood pressure, glaucoma, and edema can damage kidney function by overworking the kidney in water release.

Dr. Yusra Habib Khan, the lead author in the study "Chronic Kidney Disease, Fluid Overload and Diuretics: A Complicated Triangle" said, "The use of diuretics was associated with adverse renal outcomes indicated by a decline in eGFR (Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a measure of the function of the kidneys) and increased risk of (renal replacement therapy) RRT initiation in our cohort of NDD-CKD patients".

Therefore, the intake of medicine that has a negative effect on kidney function and diuretics medicine should be taken with extreme care.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of edema, scientists examined the dandelion diuretic effect in 17 individuals.

Participants who entered the study have a volume of urinary output and fluid intake recorded that were established 2 days prior to dandelion dosing (8 mL TID) and monitored throughout a 1-day dosing period and 24 hours postdosing.

According to the records returned by the participants, all populations showed a significant increase in the frequency of urination in the 5-hour period after the first dose.

Furthermore, a significant increase in the excretion ratio in the 5-hour period after the second dose of the extract was also reported by the participants.

However, there was no change in the measured parameters at the third dose.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "T. Officinale ethanolic extract shows promise as a diuretic in humans. Further studies are needed to establish the value of this herb for the induction of diuresis in human subjects".

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a diuretic remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthyfood Cranberry Prevents and Reduces the Risk of Colitis, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Most cases of colitis are caused by infection, such as bacteria like C. difficile, viruses, and parasites, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC).

However, according to the study by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, depending on the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis.

The most common symptoms of colitis are abdominal pain and diarrhea, bleeding per rectum, distention with bloody diarrhea, abdominal bloating and flatulence, and changes in bowel habits.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of elevated liver enzymes, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, severe peripheral arthralgias, and chronic watery diarrhea.

Believe it or not, 55 percent of patients stated that UC symptoms over the past year had affected their quality of life, while physicians and nurses estimated that 35% to 37% of patients would have a reduced quality of life.

Conventionally, treatments of colitis are total depending on the type and severity of the condition. For example, in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Self-care at home through home Telemanagement, Web-guided therapy, and pain management are the most common approach accompanied by biological therapy, if necessary.

Some researchers suggested, the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the leading cause of colitis in patients with IBD.

Dr. Jimmy K. Limdi wrote, "The parallelism between “westernization” and particularly high dietary intakes of total fat (particularly animal fats, ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), milk fats), refined sugars, meat and lower intakes of fruit and vegetables, implicates diet in the great risk of developing IBD".

And, "Diet may influence intestinal inflammation through several biologically plausible mechanisms including dietary antigen presentation, alterations in the gut microbiome, the mucosal immune system and epithelial barrier function among others".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry is cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine for the treatment of wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of IBD, researchers examined the effects of cranberry products on preventing dextran sulfate sodium-induced murine colitis.

According to the tested differentiation, both cranberry extract and dried cranberries-fed groups had significant activity against the disease index.

However, dried cranberries were more effective in preventing colitis compared to cranberry extract.

Moreover, both cranberry applications also showed a significant effect on preventing the shortening of colon length.

Biomarkers associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as colonic myeloperoxidase activity were attenuated in animals fed dried cranberries compared to the controls.

Additionally, dried cranberries also inhibited much better results against the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by the injection of dextran sulfate sodium, compared to the controls.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The current report suggests that cranberries can be applied to prevent and reduce the symptoms of IBD".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colitis in IBD patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
