Kyle J. Norton

Skin, the large external organ in the human body is the outer layer, with a total area of about 20 square feet which protects the internal organs, bones, and tissues against damage.
The skin processes 3 main layers

* Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin providing a barrier against infection from environmental pathogens. The outer layers also regulate the amount of water released from the body through transepidermal water loss.

* Dermis is the second layer of skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.

* The bottom layer is the subcutaneous fat which has been found to process the protective effect against the dangers of visceral fat.

Skin health refers to the use of material or agents, including topical and oral herbal remedies with the function to protect the skin cell against environmentally harmful substances, including sun UV light, and microbial infection.

Some researchers suggested that by providing enough nutrition to the skin cells we can maintain healthy skin. In other words, macronutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, and micronutrients such as vitamins and essential minerals all work together to maintain healthy skin.

More precisely, we can maintain healthy skin by eating a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise and avoiding exposure of skin to harmful substances.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the enhancement of skin health, researchers examined the active component of turmeric, curcumin used medically to treat a variety of dermatologic diseases in traditional medicine.

The search involved the relationship between products containing turmeric, curcumin, and skin health in the medical databases of PubMed and Embase databases and found a total of 234 articles with only 18 studies meeting inclusion criteria.

According to the identified studies, ingestion, topical use, and combined ingestion and topical use showed a statistically significant improvement in skin disease severity in the turmeric/curcumin treatment groups compared with control groups, including conditions of acne, alopecia, atopic dermatitis, facial photoaging, oral lichen planus, pruritus, psoriasis, radiodermatitis, and vitiligo.

Dr. Vaughn AR, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounder wrote in the final report, "Overall, there is early evidence that turmeric/curcumin products and supplements, both oral and topical, may provide therapeutic benefits for skin health".

In order to reveal more information about curcumin in skin protection, researchers investigated the antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties against skin diseases.

According to the tested assays, curcumin exerted protective effects against skin damage caused by chronic ultraviolet B radiation.

Curcumin application also has a strong effect on the protection against skin aging and disorders such as psoriasis, infection, acne, skin inflammation, and skin cancer.

Taken together, turmeric may be considered a supplement for skin health with no side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
