Black or common beans may be considered as function foods in attenuated risk of cardiovascular disease, a renowned institute postulated.

Therefore, increased intake of bean diet may play a prevalent role in reduced risk of CVD by increased total antioxidant activity and decreased the expression of hyperglycaemic state, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity, and tissue damage caused by lipid peroxidation.


Dr. Oliveira RJ, the lead author said, "The phaseolamin treatment attenuated the collagen levels compared to non-treated diabetic rats. Thus, the short-term anti-hyperglycaemic effect of the phaseolamin treatment may prevent the initial changes caused by oxidative stress and the deposition of collagen, as well as reduce the incidence of heart complications".


Collectively, adding a bean portion to your diet daily may have a substantially reduced risk of heart disease and heart complications in diabetics, in comparison to people with a typical American diet.
