#Herbal #Elderberry Methanol Extract Processes DPPH Scavenging activity and Anti-Glycation Activities, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Advanced glycation end is a by-product formed by protein or fat combined with sugar caused by cooking meat at high temperatures.
The products have been found to affect metabolic health.

The most common causes of AGEs are from the diet, particularly in people who follow the Western diet with high saturated and trans fat, a lot of red meats, and processed foods.

Low levels of AGEs may not be a problem, however, overexpression of AGEs can induce oxidative stress, leading to inflammation and damage proteins, lipids, and sometimes alternation of cells DNA.

In other words, AGEs initiate the production and free radicals and a free radical chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoarthritis and also non-diabetic atherosclerosis and chronic heart failure are some of the most common forms of chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress induced by AGEs.

Some researchers suggested that modern life byproducts AGEs are the results of the promotion of the processed food diet.

Dr. Chetan Sharma, and Amarjeet Kaur, the lead scientist in the assessment of AGEs, wrote, "As modern diets are largely heat-processed, they are more prone to contain high levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs)".

Elder or Common Elder is a shrub or small tree of the genus Sambucus of 30 species, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to the temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat constipation, colic, diarrhea, colds, flu, bronchial and upper respiratory, skin irritation, rheumatism, etc.

In findings a natural compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers analyzed the anti-glycation activity of chemical compounds found in Sambucus formosana (Elder)

According to chemical analysis,
* Chlorogenic acid, rutin, isoquercetrin, nictoflorin, astragalin, and quercetin were quantified in a linearity range of 10-100 (μg/mL) with a correlation coefficient of greater than 0.996.

* Furthermore, six phenolics with a relative standard deviation ranging from 1.7-3.1%.showed a high recovery (86.5-93.1%) and good reproducibility.

* Methanol extract showed the greatest values of total phenolic content (93.1 mg gallic acid equivalent/g).

* Additionally, the methanol extract revealed the best antioxidant capacity based on the DPPH scavenging activity and anti-glycation activity (IC50 was observed at 97.1 and 77.9 μg/mL, respectively).

Taken together, Elder processes a number of antioxidants that may be considered an anti-glycation activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
