#Bean Fibers Exert a Strong Glycemic Control by Lowering the Levels of Blood Glucose, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Noton

Epidemiological studies suggested that bean fiber may be used as a therapeutically functional food in reduced risk of hyperglycemia.

Hyperglycemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high blood sugar in the bloodstream. According to the glucose test, anyone who has fasting levels over 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dL) and 2-hour postprandial (after a meal) levels greater than 11.0 mmol/L (200 mg/dL) is hyperglycemic.

According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, dietary fiber intake daily and regularly not only lowers blood cholesterol levels but also normalizes blood glucose and insulin levels, thus reducing the risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Unfortunately, recommended intakes, 20-35 g/day for healthy adults and age plus 5 g/day for children, are not being met, according to the statistic.
.
In the concern of high-fat Western diet in risk of hyperglycemia, Dr. Mbikay M, the lead author in the study of "Variable effects of gender and Western diet on lipid and glucose homeostasis in aged PCSK9-deficient C57BL/6 mice CSK9PC57BL/6" wrote,
* On Female tested subjects, the Western diet showed comparable plasma TC and HDL-C, but lower LDL-C, higher plasma glucose, and normal glucose disposal despite impaired GSIS compared to the normal diet.

* On Males, both normal and Western diets, showed lower plasma TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C, similarly elevated plasma glucose, glucose intolerance, and impaired GSIS.

These results suggested normal diet have a strong effect in reducing the risk of hyperglycemia in female compared to the Western diet and both diets are considered to have a significantly positive effect in increasing the risk of hyperglycemia.

In a randomized, single-blind, crossover design study (food intake: n=22; glycemia: n=10) with 5 liquid meals distributing similar amounts of macronutrients (C - control shake, OB - oat bran shake, F - flaxseed shake, WB - white bean extract shake, and UB - unripe banana flour shake) consumed in five non-consecutive days, researchers after examining the returned questionnaire from participants after 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes ingestion of each shake, suggested that
* Compared to the control, intake of white bean extract shake showed a significantly increased fiber component.

* Bean extract exhibited a strong glycemic control through the expression of incremental areas under the curves (iAUC).

Additionally, in the study of children completed a trial of 4 different breakfasts, participated children were given in random order, with 3 diets differed in fiber content and the fourth diet contained soya beans as part (38%) of the dietary fiber source,

Then, children in all groups were asked to exercise vigorously for an hour each morning and to rest for an hour. Blood samples drawn from children reveal the following results.
* There were no differences in blood glucose levels on the high-fiber diet compared to those on the medium-fiber diet.

* Children fed with a bean diet scored a significantly lowest mean blood glucose level, and

*The effect of glycemic control on the blood glucose of the bean diet was last into the hour before lunch.

Even with the better control of blood glucose, the bean diet was found to be an unacceptable diet among children, in comparison to the likes of high- and medium-fiber diets, which were as popular as the low-fiber diet.

Taken together, there is no doubt that bean fibers may have a positive effect in attenuating the risk of abnormally high blood glucose, a major risk factor in the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
