Andrographis aniculata, The Herbal Remedy Which Blocks Pathogens In Initiated Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Andrographis paniculata may be one of the best herb in inhibited pathogens (viruses and bacteria) that cause acute upper respiratory tract infection, including the infection of the nose, sinuses, pharynx or larynx. some researchers suggested.

The acute infection is very contagious, anyone who comes to contact with patients may also be infected by inhaling respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing.

People who are infected by virus that can be resolved without prescription drugs. However, upper respiratory tract infection caused by bacteria, in most case is treated with antibiotics used such as Penicillin VK(Penicillin V) Amoxicillin and (Amoxil, Moxatag, Trimox) Penicillin.

Due to over use of the medicine, some bacteria have developed antibiotic-resistant in response to these medicines.

Intake of antibiotics may be effective, but they have known to interact with others medicine such as medicine that lower cholesterol, treat  migraine,.... and gout, induce serious side effects such as vomiting,  diarrhea, rash........ and abdominal cramps.

Some patients may also experience allergic reaction induction of shortness of breath, hives, swelling of lips, face, or tongue, fainting.

If you are treated with such medicine, please make sure you discuss the effects with your doctor.

Furthermore, according to the study of Georgia Regents University, "Acute respiratory tract illnesses are the most frequent illnesses of humans and are an important cause of disability and days lost from school or work. Respiratory infections are an important cause of mortality and hospitalization, particularly in the winter in temperate regions" and " In children less than 5 years of age, they are the leading cause of death. Most acute respiratory infections are caused by viruses and bacteria, including rhinoviruses, respiratory syncytial viruses, adenoviruses, influenza viruses, and parainfluenza viruses"(4).

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belongings to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,....

According to the joint study lead by the ilpakorn University in the review of the existence data of the literature and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, application of andrographis paniculata exerted a strong implication in the symptomatic treatment of uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection by measuring the reduction in symptom severity scores.

In a total of 433 patients reported in three trials included in the statistical analysis, patient treated with combination of Andrographis aniculata, Acanthopanax senticosus and Andrographis aniculata alone exhibited a significant improvement of 2.13 points and 10.85 points on the symptom severity score respectively, in compared placebo.

Dr. Poolsup N, the lead author said, "A. paniculata extract alone or in combination with A. senticosus extract may be more effective than placebo and may be an appropriate alternative treatment of uncomplicated acute upper respiratory tract infection".

Furthermore, in the review to prevent the over-prescription of antibiotics and absence from work due to acute upper respiratory tract infection, reseahcers found the A. paniculata is found to be more superior to placebo in alleviating the subjective symptoms of uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection.

The study also indicated that all review trials scored at least three, out of a maximum of five, for methodological quality on the Jadad scale.

More importantly, the efficacy of A. paniculata in relieving symptoms of uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection only induced generally mild and infrequent adverse effects.

Moreover, in supporting the Andrographis aniculata's anti upper respiratory tract infection property, a total of 223 patients of both sexes randomized in two groups which received either KalmCold (200 mg/day) or placebo, scientists showed that A. paniculata ameliorates symptoms of cough, expectoration, nasal discharge, headache, fever, sore throat, earache, malaise/fatigue and sleep disturbance from day 1 to day 3 of treatment in compared to placebo group.

Additionally, the overall efficacy of extract of Andrographis paniculata was found to be 2.1 times (52.7%) higher than placebo.

Taking together, there is no doubt that Andrographis aniculata has a potency used as therapeutic agent for relieving symptoms and treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infection but intake of large doses and long term intake should be taken with care.

Chamomile, The Herb Which Processes Benzodiazepine-Like Hypnotic Activity For Pain, Anxiety,... and Sleep Disorder With No Adverse Effects, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

"Let foods be your medicine and let medicines be your food", using foods as medication has been a dream of many scholars and scientists over past many centuries.

In order to achieve these, consumption of whole food medicine must be accompanied by moderated exercise, change of diet and life style.

Chamomile, the most frequently used medical plant may be next generation of whole herb to act as sedative agent to treat pain, anxiety,...... and sleep disorder.

Sedation is a action that induces calm or sleep by using medicine, drugs, or substances to suppress the activity of central nervous system.

Over dose of sedative substances can be fatal.

Medicine such as placidyl, ethchlorvynol. a mild sedative-hypnotic drug used for treatment may be effective, but they can cause serious side effects such as skin condition, such as skin rash or hives dizziness,...... nervousness and restlessness.
In some cases, patients overdose with sedative drugs can also cause darkening of urine, pale stools, yellow eyes,....skin easily bled or bruised, confusion, change of vision or (continuing),..... and double vision.

Sleep disorder is a problem of sleeping. classification of sleep disorder deepening to types of condition includes, insomnia, a problem of falling and staying asleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep-disruptive behaviors,.... and sleep rhythm problem.

According to statistic, between 50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae,

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

In a quasi-experimental clinical trial, included 77 cases of elderly hospitalized in nursing homes, using random continuous sampling by divided into intervention group received 400 mg oral capsules of chamomile twice daily, after lunch and after dinner for 4 weeks. and control groups received nothing to test the efficacy of chamomile in sleep disorder, researchers showed that oral administration of chamomile extract has sedative properties in sleep quality in compared to control.

These results were observed by analyzing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire in compared to no different of the mean score of sleep quality both experimental and control groups before experiment, the mean score of sleep quality was a significant difference between experimental and control groups after 4 weeks.

Moreover, in a triple blind clinical trial performed on 114 eligible women at Ommolbanin Hospital in Mashhad, Iran in 2014, randomly assigned to two groups using random blocks. After delivery,
* mothers in the intervention group are received 0.5 g of prescribed chamomile

* Mothers in the control group are given placebo cream on the stitch twice a day lasting ten days.

At the end of the study, researchers found that mothers received chamomile cream is found to reduce episiotomy pain sedately in primiparous women in compared to control.

Additional differentiation and after taking into account of other co con founders, researchers also discovered, although there are no difference before and 12 hours and the first day after delivery. on the seventh, tenth and fourteenth day after delivery according to McGill mean (SD) pain score,  experimental group was 11.36, 4.44 and 7.16 in compared to control group of 14.88, 7.41 and 9.96 respectively.

Dr. McKay DL said, " Chamomile has moderate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and significant antiplatelet activity Animal model studies indicate potent antiinflammatory action, some antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering activities, as well as antispasmotic and anxiolytic effects" and "(Unfortunately) However, human studies are limited, and clinical trials examining the purported sedative properties of chamomile tea are absent."

In fact, in the investigated hypnotic activities of chamomile and passiflora extracts using sleep-disturbed model rats, researcher at the Okayama University insisted, chamomile extract at a dose of 300 mg/kg exerted significantly decrease sleep latency.

The study also suggested, chamomile extract is a herb having benzodiazepine-like hypnotic activity.

Taking altogether, Chamomile may be helpful to aid pain, calm and sleep through its sedative effects, but intake of correct amount should only be given by qualified herbalist

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Polyphenol EGCG Kill Bacteria That Cause Carbuncle

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of carbuncle, a skin disease, some scientists suggested.

Carbuncle is a collection of boils developed under the skin caused by bacterial infection of hair follicles in the induction of swelling.

Although the infections are most likely developing on the follicles of the hair, they can also appear on other areas of the body such as the buttocks, thighs, groin, and armpits.

Researchers suggested that people who are older age, obesity, poor hygiene, and poor health are most likely associated with increased risk of carbuncles.

However,  chronic skin conditions, chronic kidney disease,.... and liver disease are also increased the prevalent risk the infection.

According to University of Miami School of Medicine, "Skin infections account for a significant portion of dermatologic disease, often resulting in or as a consequence of a disruption in the skin's integrity" and " The infections presented herein include impetigo, ecthyma, folliculitis, carbuncles/furuncles, cellulitis, toxic shock syndrome, and ecthyma gangrenosum"(4).

The differentiation hinted that people with carbuncle are also susceptible to the onset of skin disease.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the searching of the natural ingredient to replace the use of antibiotics in treatment of bacterial infection of carbuncle, researchers at the J the Rockefeller University  found that epigallocatechin-3-gallate isolated from green tea extracts exerts a significant effect iinhibitinged the activity of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a leading candidate in exhibited risk of carbuncle.

Further analysis also suggested that application EGCG inhibited the typhimurium type III protein effectors in restriction of bacterial invasion into tested cells.

The type III secretion system of Salmonella typhimurium is found to have a direct effect in  translocation of proteins into host cells in initiated infection.

Dr. Tsou LK, the lead authors said, "These results reveal additional dietary plant metabolites that can attenuate bacterialvirulence and infection of host cells".

Some researchers at the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, after lenghty searching for effective agent without inducing intolerant adverse effect for treatment of bacterial infection, found that green tea catechins, the major green tea polyphenols, shows antimicrobial activity against resistant pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and the standard strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa).

In compared of catechins, green tea extract, and methylxanthines in combination with gentamicin against standard and clinical isolates, inhibited bacterial activities by a minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) of gentamicin in the range of 0.312 - 320 μg/mL and The MIC values of both types of catechins were 62.5 - 250 μg/ mL. in compared to no effect in methylxanthines  application.

Interestingly, the dose of gentamicin was reduced substantial if addina g dose of green tea extract and cactechin according to the MICs.

These result indicated that green extract and major bioactive polyphenol catechin may be used alone or combined with gentamicin for treatment of bacterial infection, including carbuncle without inducinthe g adverse effect.

Dr. Fazly Bazzaz BS, the lead scientist after taking into account of other co and confounders said, "green tea extract and catechins potentiated the antimicrobial action of gentamicin against some clinical isolates of S. aureus and standard P. aeruginosa strains" and "combinations of gentamicin with these natural compounds might be a promising approach to combat microbial resistance".

Additionally, the evaluatthe e antibacterial activity of the Indonesian water soluble green tea extract, Camellia sinensis, against clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (MRSA) and multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-P. aeruginosa conducted by theUniversity of Indonesia suggested
* The inhibition zone diameters of green tea extracts for S. aureus ATCC 25923 and MRSA were 18.970 ± 0.287 mm, and (19.130 ± 0.250) mm respectively.

* The inhibition zone diameter for P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and MDR-P. aeruginosa were (17.550 ± 0.393) mm and (17.670 ± 0.398) mm respectively.

*The MIC of green tea extracts against S. aureus ATCC 25923 and MRSA were 400 µg/mL and 400 µg/mL, respectively.

And
* The MIC for P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and MDR-P. aeruginosa were 800 µg/mL, and 800 µg/mL, respectively.

Taking altogether, green tea extract and its bioactive polyphenol catechin may be considered as a functional food in reduced risk and treatment of carbuncle caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).

Howvwer, intake of green tea extract should be taken with extreme care as acute liver toxicity has been reported by numbers of medical literature.

Papaya Fruit Extract, The Potent and Future Chemotherapeutic Medicine With No Side Effects, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Papaya extract may be the next potential pharmacological target to identify the ingredients for treatment of cancers, some scientists suggested(2).

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases, characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly.
Some cancers are slow growing and some are very invasive. However, at the advanced state, most cancers can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy organs and tissue.

According to the World center fund International, in 2012, there were 14.1 million cancer cases, affecting 7.4 million in men and 6.7 million in women. This number is expected to increase to 24 million by 2035(3).

Most common types of cancer include non-melanoma skin cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, bladder cancer and melanoma.

The Canadian Cancer Society statistic, an estimated 206,200 new cases of cancer and 80,800 deaths from cancer occurred in Canada in 2017. (The number of estimated new cases does not include non-melanoma skin cancer cases.).

Papaya, a species of Carica Papaya, belongings to the family Caricaceae, native to the tropics of the Americas.

The fruit has been used in traditional medicine as remedies for many various ailments, including gastric problems, inflammation, and cancer.

Nutrients of papaya include Vitamin A, Thiamine (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, etc. and major chemical constituent and ethanol extract including benzylisothiocyanate are said to exhibit immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, hyperlipidemic, anti cellular oxidative stress, anti neural tube defect, etc. effects(1).

The University of Tokyo, in the study to examine the effect of aqueous-extracted CP leaf fraction on the growth of various tumor cell lines and on the anti-tumor effect of human lymphocytes, application of the extract inhibit significant growth activity, through immunomodulatory effects through stimutulated natural production of interleukin 12 (also known as natural killer cell stimulatory factor 2) which plays an essential role in blocking pathogens and to transplantable and chemical substances that cause tumors(4).

Interestingly, researchers found that CP extract inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-2 and IL-4 without affecting IL-12p40, IL-12p70, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha function.

These results suggested Carica papaya leaf extract can mediate a Th1 type shift in human immune system activated interleukin-12 (IL-12), making IL-12 the potential to act as anti-inflammatory cytokine during secondary responses in the site that alternated healthy cell DNA.

Dr. Otsuki N, the lead author said, " CP leaf extract may potentially provide the means for the treatment and prevention of selected human diseases such as cancer, various allergic disorders, and may also serve as immunoadjuvant for vaccine therapy".

IL-12p70(a heterodimer), IFN-gamma(regulation of immunologically relevant genes) and TNF-alpha an are an innate immune response to fight off viral infection)(4).

Furthermore, fermented papaya, a traditional dish of many Southeast Asian cultures, is said to process antioxidant and immune-modulating potentials, through the influence of signaling cascades associated with cell growth and survival, from epidemiological and in-vitro studies of a patient with diabetes(5).

Truly, application of papaya peel extract (PapPE), also demonstrated that the efficacy not only  controls blood glucose, excessive inflammation, but also modulates free radical-induced oxidative damage which are triggers of liver, bladder, breast and prostate cancers in type 2 diabetics(6).

In cultured human lung cancer H69 cell, researchers showed that benzyl glucosinolate (BG) found in the pulp and the seed of papaya, inhibited cancer cell proliferation in an administration of doses of 6.5 μmol(7), probably through its effect in superoxide generation and apoptosis induction(8).

Benzylisothiocyanate (BITC), another chemical constituent also mediated apoptosis of prostate and pancreases cancer cells through activation both procaspase-8 pathways(initiation of apoptosis) and cell cycle arrest(9), inhibited advanced ovarian cancer cell lines through activation of caspase-3(activation in the apoptotic cell) and -9(activation of apoptotic process), and cleavage of PARP-1(repair of DNA damage)(10) and breast cancer through generation of reactive oxygen species and cleavage of caspase-9, caspase-8, and caspase-3(11).

Dr/ Nguyen and the research team at The University of Queensland told PubMed "(The) extract-based or specific compound-based investigations and emphasize the aspects (of papaya) that warrant future research to explore the bioactives in C. papaya for their anticancer activities"(2).

Taken altogether, fermented papaya and it major chemical constituents such as Benzyl glucosinolate (BG) and Benzylisothiocyanate (BITC) may be effective in reduced risk and treatment for certain types of cancer, through cell cycle arrest and unregulated apoptotic pathways but further studies with large sample size and multi-centers are necessary to identify the main ingredients in comparison of currently pharmacological medicine use to improve its validation.

The Kitchen Herbal Cayenne Spice Bioactive Compound Which Has The Potential to Cure Non Allergic Rhinitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have a positive and potential effect in reduced risk and treatment of Non-Allergic Rhinitis, according to some studies.

Nonallergic rhinitis is a condition with symptoms resembles allergy induced rhinitis but without a known cause.  However, some researchers suggested that environmental pollutants or odors, certain foods or beverages,,,,,,, and changes in the weather can trigger symptoms of the condition.

Some medications and underlying chronic health problems are associated with an increased risk of  nonallergic rhinitis,

Most common symptoms are persistent sneezing, congestion, or a runny nose.

Chronic forms of rhinitis occurred in the absence of any detectable specific IgE against relevant allergens. In its broadest sense can be called chronic nonallergic rhinitis(1).

Long-term intake of  medicine used for the treatment of nonallergic rhinitis such as nasal sprays containing an antihistamine may reduce symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis but can facilitate side effects of drowsiness or sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nose, or throat,,,, increased appetite, weight gain, and upset stomach

In some cases, patients may experience, thickening of mucus, changes in vision, some psychological symptoms of nervousness, excited,... and irritable.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belongings to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

Ingredients
The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid,.... and palmitic acid.

ICX72 or Sinus Buster, a proprietary homeopathic preparation of Capsicum annum, in the study of 42 consented subjects meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria randomized to ICX72 (n = 20) or control (n = 22) administered twice daily over 2 weeks, exhibited significant differences in changes from baseline and improvement in nasal congestion, sinus pain, sinus pressure, and headache, at 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes, persisting at 60 minutes for nasal congestion and sinus pain inpatients with Nonallergic rhinitis(2).

Further analysis in concerns of the application adverse effects, researchers found that there is no difference between groups in adverse events in compared to placebo.

Dr. Bernstein JA, the lead author said, " ......intranasal capsaicin, when used continuously over 2 weeks, rapidly and safely improves symptoms in rhinitis subjects with a significant NAR component".

More importantly, ICX72 group experienced no rebound congestion or impaired olfaction in compared to placebo at the end of the study.

Moreover,  in the study of 30 patients randomized into two different treatment regimens
* Group A received capsaicin five times on the first day at 1-h intervals, followed by a placebo dummy once every second or third day for a total of five treatments 2 weeks after the capsaicin application.

* Group B received the placebo dummy five times on the first day followed by capsaicin once every second or third day for a total of five treatments 2 weeks after the placebo application.

At the end of the experiment, researchers showed that
* Treatment group A reduced overall nasal symptoms, rhinorrhea, and nasal blockage, in compared to group B

* Both groups showed a significant reduction in cold dry air does responsiveness and nasal hyperreactivity. up to 9 months after therapy

* There were no No significant changes in safety data (smell, blood pressure, heart rate in group A in compared to group B.

Dr. Van Rijswijk JB, the lead scientist wrote, "....intranasal capsaicin seems safe to use and that five treatments of capsaicin on a single day is at least as effective as five treatments of capsaicin in 2 weeks".

The findings suggested that capsaicin may process the potential to cure nonallergic rhinitis.

However, large example size and multi-center clinical trials are necessary to reconfirm capsaicin anti nonallergic rhinitis validity.

Strawberry and It's Bioactive Flavonoids That Eradicate Risk Factors of Heart Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a fruit which has a potential effect in reduced risk and treatment of heart disease, some studies suggested.

According to statistic, heart disease, after lung cancer kills more than 2,000 Americans every day.

Approximately, 60 million Americans have heart disease.

There are many causes of heart diseases.

Most of the heart diseases are caused by high blood pressure which contributes to hardening of the arteries.

Some researchers suggested that diet high in saturated and trans fats also plays an important role in the initiated risk of coronary heart disease. As the long-term unhealthy diet can cause obesity, high blood pressure,... and diabetes.

Dr. McNamara DJ, in the study of dietary cholesterol, heart disease risk and cognitive dissonance, wrote, "....dietary cholesterol has a small effect on the plasma cholesterol levels with an increase in the cholesterol content of the LDL particle and an increase in HDL cholesterol, with little effect on the LDL: HDL ratio, a significant indicator of heart disease risk"(4).

Truly, everything that adds to the formation of atherosclerosis lesions, damages the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart, is considered prevalent risk factors of arterial blockage, the main cause of heart disease.

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongings to the family Roseaceae.

The edible plants have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits due to their's health benefits.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

According to the followed up study to examine the relationship between anthocyanins, the largest group of water-soluble pigments and the risk of MI, anthocyanin, strawberries intake was found to be potential in preventing myocardial infarction (MI) in young and middle-aged women.

Intake of strawberries was also associated with a decreased risk of MI, in a comparison of those consuming >3 servings a week and those with lower intake.

Dr. Cassidy A, the lead scientist, in the study conducted by the University of East Anglia, including a total of 93 600 women 25 to 42 years of age from the database of the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) II, after taking into account of multivariate adjustment said, "An inverse association between higher intake of anthocyanins and risk of MI was observed (hazard ratio, 0.68; 95% confidence interval, 0.49-0.96; P=0.03, highest versus lowest quintiles)".

Further differentiation of the effects of anthocyanins in reduced risk of a heart problem, also found that anthocyanins efficacy may be associated to improve a variety of effects on blood vessels, platelets, and lipoproteins, the coronary heart diseases reducers.

Moreover, the study of participants includes 34 489 postmenopausal women in the Iowa Women's Health Study who were free of CVD and had complete food-frequency questionnaire information  that include Intakes of total flavonoids and 7 subclasses categorized into quintiles at baseline, using the proportional hazards rate ratios (RR) to compute for CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and total mortality after 16 y of follow-up, showed,

* There was a significant inverse association between anthocyanidins and CHD, CVD, and total mortality in compared to no intake of proportional hazards rate ratios (RR) of 0.88, 0.91, and 0.90, respectively.

* The proportional hazards rate ratios (RR) between flavanones and CHD [RR for highest quintile versus lowest 0.78 and between flavones and total mortality [RR for highest quintile versus lowest: 0.88.

* Intake of strawberry were associated with significantly reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases in compared to other foods in the questionnaire.

These results suggested that dietary intakes of flavanones, anthocyanidins, and foods rich in flavonoids were associated with reduced risk of death due to CHD, CVD, and all causes, according to Dr. Mink PJ, the lead scientist.

Taken altogether, strawberry with rich of flavanones, anthocyanidins, and flavonoids may be considered as a functional food in the prevention of early onset and treatment of heart disease.

Butterbur, The Functional Herb Which Protects Neurons Integrity, Scientist Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists have found a herbal plant which processes a potential and therapeutic effect in the protection against damage and death of neurons.

Neuroprotective effects are the protection against anything which causes harm to the brain and spinal cord

In other words, herbal butterbur promotes neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss that causes neurodegenerative disease.

Dr. Vajda FJ, the scientist at the St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne in the expression of neuro diseases said, "neuroprotection is an effect that may result in salvage, recovery or regeneration of the nervous system, its cells, structure, and function. It is thought that there are many neurochemical modulators of nervous system damage" and " Acute and chronic nervous system damage in response to an insult may lead to acute or delayed neuronal death, apoptotic cell death, neuronal degeneration, injury and loss, and gliosis"(4).

The Mcgovern Istitute in the article related to brain disorder wrote, "Many brain disorders are chronic and incurable conditions whose disabling effects may continue for years or even decades. Thus, the overall disease burden from these disorders is much greater than would be suggested by mortality figures alone. The extent of this burden is underlined by data from the World Health Organization".

Most common brain disease neurodegenerative disease including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), affecting millions of people worldwide.

And, dementia is an umbrella term that describes a variety of diseases and conditions caused by nerve cells in the brain die or no longer function normally. Symptoms may affect memory, behavior and ability to think clearly.

According to statistic, approximately over 5.7 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's. as of 2018, 1 in 8 people age 65 and older (10 percent) has Alzheimer's disease in the US. Sadly, The numbers of Alzheimer's disease are growing and growing fast.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine as an pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts,...... and duodenum.

The Ingredients
The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

In the study to investigate neuroprotective effects in a rat transient focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion model, and in an in vitro cerebral ischemia model, oxygen-glucose deprivation of cultured nerve cells, researchers found that application of total bakkenolides, a major bioactive constituent isolated immediately after reperfusion at doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg markedly reduced brain infarct volume and neurological deficits.

Additional analysis also suggested, the administrated doses also significantly attenuated cell death and apoptosis in primarily cultured neurons subject to 1-h hypoxia followed by 24-h reoxygenation.

The efficacy of herbal butterbur in protected neurons was attributed by total bakkenolides in inhibited an enzyme activators with function in propagated the cellular response to inflammation through NF-κB, a protein complex regulated transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.

In other words, application of total bakkenolides reduced brain infarct volume and over expression of pro inflammation cytokines in response to focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion that have a strong impact in decreased neuro cell damage and death at the site of reperfusion injure.

Dr. Jiang Q, the lead author after taking into account of other co and confounder said, "(The) results provide a strong pharmacological basis for further understanding the potential therapeutic role of total bakkenolides in cerebral ischemic disease.

Some researchers in the study of Bakkenolides in primary cultured neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation and oxidative insults, suggested, Bakkenolides exerted neuro protective effects may be results from properties of its antioxidant properties.

Moreover, petaslignolide A (PA), a furfuran lignan isolated from butanol fraction of Petasites japonicus (Sieb. et Zucc.) (Compositae) leaves in study of the oxidative damage in the brain of mice, facilitated a significant effect at dose of 40 mg/kg in alleviated the behavioral signs of kainic acid neurotoxicity and reduced the mortality (50%) by kainic acid to 12.5%.

Administration of PA also restore the levels of antioxidants in the mice that were reduced by injection of kainic acid in compared to control.

Further analsysis found that  PA (40 mg/kg) effectiveness is comparable to those of butanol fraction (200 mg/kg) of P. japonicus extract in reducing kainic acid neurotoxicity.

These results indicated that  butanol fraction (200 mg/kg) of P. japonicus extract exhibited strong neuro protective, probably is due to the presence of petaslignolide A (PA).

The findings suggested herbal butterbur may be considered as a functional herb for neuro protection, however, the volume of the herb used should only be prescribed herbal doctor.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food  during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of butterbur neuro protective possibilities.
