Omega 3 Fatty Acids Inhibit Inflammatory Allergic Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic allergic airways disease (AAD) is a group of the disease characterized by airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR).

Airway inflammation is the hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) associated with low-grade inflammation caused by persistent production of proinflammatory cytokines by the immune system in the airway.

On the other hand, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) is a cardinal feature of asthma associated with the response of the immune system against pathogens.

Most common symptoms of coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath in reactive airway disease (AAD) may not be due to asthma or other chronic airways conditions.

Conventionally, reactive airway inflammatory disease is treated with medication to control symptoms such as long-term use of an inhaler to relieve attacks and improved quality of life through avoidance of irritants.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.

During the asthma attacks, patients may experience symptoms of difficult breathing, and severe wheezing in the breath and coughs that won't stop.

According to the statistic provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 13 people in the US has asthma.

In other words, more than 26 million Americans have asthma, with half of the patients are children.

If you experience symptoms of a cough which often worse at night or early in the morning, wheezing in your breath, accompanied by chest tightness and shortness of breath, you may be at the early stage of asthma. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the causal relationship between decreased intake of fish oil in modernized diets and an increasing number of individuals with asthma or other allergic diseases.

According to the tested differentiation, the pro-resolving mediators (SPM: protectins, resolvins, and maresins) generated from omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA via several enzymatic reactions showed a strong impact in the regulation of the airway eosinophilic inflammation and promotion of the resolution of inflammation in vivo.

The efficacy of the mediator in the inhibition of allergic diseases associated with inflammation was attributed to the improvement of the impairment of the biosynthesis of SPM.

The clinical lipidology wrote, "Defects in anti-inflammatory/pro-resolution lipid mediators can contribute to inflammatory disease severity. Anti-inflammatory/pro-resolution lipid mediators can be used to develop therapeutics that enhance rather than block the endogenous regulation of inflammation".

In other words, diseases associated with chronic inflammation in the lung might be a result of a resolution defect.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases caused by SPM defect, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
