Omega 3 Fatty Acid, a Natural Source of Inflammation Relief

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.

Macrophages, one the lymphocytes and the first-line defense of the immune system after sensing the damage of localized tissue, stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site to protect the body against invasion of potential pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute information is the first phase of injection.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as in hours with pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

Conventionally, depending on the types of acute inflammation, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to alleviate the pain by counteracting an enzyme that contributes to inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is a result of a prolonged period of inflammation that lasts for several months and even years caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all harmful microorganisms during the acute phase of infection.

Chronic inflammation can also be caused by an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system continuously attacks normal and healthy tissue, by mistaking them for pathogens.

Low-grade inflammation is a different type of chronic inflammation characterized by a production of the inflammatory cytokines in a low-grade state.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers investigated the protective effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) against hepatic steatosis-induced inflammation and its potential molecular mechanisms in hepatocyte of large yellow croaker (Larmichthys crocea).

According to the experimental results, ω-3 PUFAs exerted anti hepatic steatosis-induced inflammation activity.

The SIRT1 gene associated with cellular regulation that decreases in the hepatic steatosis-induced inflammation was increased by ω-3 PUFAs.

Furthermore, the Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) is a ubiquitous transcription factor that is involved in inflammatory and immune responses were significantly decreased after ω-3 PUFAs treatments compared to the palmitic acid stimulation group.

In other words, ω-3 PUFAs alleviate hepatic steatosis-induced inflammation through Sirt1-mediated nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 subunit in hepatocytes of large yellow croaker.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "The present study provides important insight into the mechanisms of the protective effects of ω-3 PUFAs, providing theory bases for alleviating the hepatic steatosis induced inflammation of farmed fish, thereby offering great benefits to the aquaculture industry and fish consumers".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved in inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
