Turmeric Inhibits Hair Loss and Promotes Hair Growth in Men

By Kyle J. Norton

Every day the scalp loses about 100 hairs and they will grow back in 5-6 weeks. However, in older men, hair loss was associated with the increase of levels of by-product prolactin of testosterone-induced the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT, a leading cause in the promotion of hair growing back thinner or not grown back at all.

The presence of gihydro-testosterones DHT shrinks the follicles causing hair thins and hair receding at the forehead, crown, and temple for men and thins over the entire scalp for women.

There are many factors involved in the loss of hair.  Aging, nutrient deficiency, genetic proposition, smoking, and unhealthy diet are some of the most common risk factors that cause hair loss in the Western world.

Conventionally, Minoxidil, a topical medicine approved by The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was found to stop hairs from getting thinner and stimulate hair growth on the top of the scalp with a number of side effects.

Dr. Rossi A, the lead scientist at the University Sapienza of Rome in the evaluation of the effects of
oral Minoxidil wrote, " Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener, causing hyperpolarization of cell membranes and it is also a vasodilator, it is speculated that, by widening blood vessels and opening potassium channels, it allows more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to the follicle".

And, "The most common adverse reactions of the topical formulation are limited to irritant and allergic contact dermatitis on the scalp. There have been cases of allergic reactions to the nonactive ingredient propylene glycol, which is found in some topical solution especially if they are galenic".

Therefore, if you are using the aforementioned product for the treatment of hair loss, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measure.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of hair loss, researchers evaluated the efficacy of 5% hexane extract of Curcuma aeruginosa (turmeric), a botanically derived inhibitor of 5α-reductase and 5% minoxidil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.

The study included 87 men with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) randomized to receive 5% Curcuma aeruginosa, 5% minoxidil, combination formulation (5% hexane extract of Curcuma aeruginosa + 5% minoxidil) or placebo, twice daily for 6 months.

According to the tested assay, the combined treatment group showed statistically significant improvements of hair regrowth, and hair shedding in a global photographic review of all subjects, compared to the single treatment of groups and placebo.

In other words, treatment with 5% minoxidil and 5% C. aeruginosa extract shoed some degrees of hair regrowth without affecting hair shedding.

No adverse \effects were found during the course of the experiment.

Based on the results, researchers wrote in the final report, "In men with hair loss in the vertex area of the scalp, the combination of 5% hexane extract of C. aeruginosa and 5% minoxidil slowed hair loss and increased hair growth".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with minoxidil may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of alopecia areata, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
