^^^^^Garlic,The Spice That Gobbles Up Arterial Plaques Before They Can Cause Atherosclerosis

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Herbal medicine, the study of botany that use plant for medical treatment and cure, linking health benefits in prevention, management and treatment of diseases has been present in human history over thousands of year.
Today, the whole herb treatment have drawn much interests in some conscientious scientists.

However, the journey of finding the specific whole food medicine for treatment of diseases has been encountered many obstacles, because of lacking financial support from commercial institutes and opposed by the big pharmaceutical companies.

Not only the discoveries can not be patent, they can also cause substantial drop of their profits.

Many researchers has raised question of quality of the herbs used in experimen as geographic differences, time of grown and harvest, may effect the potency.

Truly, although herbal plants have formed a fundamental source for conventional medicine, the big drug companies only interest in discovery of single ingredient medication, such as aspirin is synthesized from willow bark, quinine, synthesized from cinchona bark), and morphine,......and  synthesized from the opium poppy......

Lung Cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cells growth in the lung tissue, originally. At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the lung to infect other healthy organs tissue.

In Canada, Lung cancer not only is the most commonly diagnosed cancer after melanoma skin cancers. it also is a leading cause of death in both men and women.
According to Canadian Cancer Society(6), In 2017, an estimated:
* 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer. This represents 14% of all new cancer cases in 2017.

* 21,100 Canadians died from lung cancer. This represents 26% of all cancer deaths in 2017.14,400 men were diagnosed with lung cancer and 11,100 died from it.

* 14,200 women were diagnosed with lung cancer and 10,000 died from it.

* On average, 78 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer every day.

* On average, 58 Canadians died from lung cancer every day
.

Long term cigarette smoking, second hand smoke and exposure to chemical smoke are the major causes of the disease.

And the symptoms of lung cancer include persistent cough that does not go away,
coughing up blood or rust-colored sputum (spit or phlegm), chronic chest pain that is often worse with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing, shortness of breath,.....and weight loss and loss of appetite.

In the advanced stage lung cancer patients may also experience symptoms of coughing up blood or rust-colored sputum (spit or phlegm).

According to the joint study lead by the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, " The suicide mortality rates have significantly decreased (before 1993: 0.21%, 1994-2003: 0.16%, after 2004: 0.09%, P < .001). Male (OR 6.22, 95% CI: 4.96-7.98, P < .001), white (OR 3.89, 95% CI: 2.66-5.97, P < .001), being unmarried (OR 1.43, 95% CI: 1.22-1.67, P < .001), the elderly (60-74 vs <60: OR 1.24, 95% CI: 1.03-1.50, P = .024, >75 vs <60: OR 1.31, 95% CI: 1.05-1.63, P = .018) were independently associated with higher risk of suicide mortality" and "Surgery (OR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.19-1.73, P < .001) was also relative with higher risk of suicide"(7).

Recent study suggested that garlic may be used as chemo prevention and treatment of lung cancer.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belongings to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. the herb has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine for treatment of common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels,...... and as natural antibiotic.
According to the study by Medical Research Center, College of Medicine, allyl sulfur compounds and garlic extract found in garlic exhibited anti non small cell lung cancer cell lines effects through interference on tumor cell division and tumor cell proliferation.

In benzo(a)pyrene-induced precancerous carcinogenesis in human lung cells, application of oil-soluble organosulfur compounds in garlic induced suppression of cell proliferation, cell cycle regulation, attenuation of ROS formation, inhibition of DNA damage.

The examine of association between raw garlic consumption and lung cancer, a case-control study conducted between 2005 and 2007 in Taiyuan, China, showed that in compared with no intake, raw garlic intake is associated with lower risk of development of lung cancer with a dose-response pattern.

In fact, the Epidemiologic data collected by face-to-face interviews using a standard questionnaire among 1,424 lung cancer cases and 4,543 healthy controls also supported the negation of garlic intake and lung disease and suggested that garlic may potentially serve as a chemopreventive agent for lung cancer.

Dr. Yang GQ, the lead researchers at the 107th Hospital of the People's Liberation Army said, "black garlic extract (BGE) could have significant inhibitory action on the growth of lung cancer Lewis cells. The combination of BGE and radiotherapy (by 60Co gamma) significantly induced Lewis cells' apoptosis in G2/M stage".

Therefore, adding a portion of garlic in your diet  may be beneficial for increased protection against lung cancer development. However, further data collection on large sample size and multi centers clinical studies performed with human consumption during the course of the investigation will be necessary to complete the picture of harlicand its bioactive compounds protective effect against lung cancer possibilities.
