Detoxification - How to Detox and Nourish Your Heart for Optimal Health, Citations Provided By Medline

Detoxification is a process to remove a large quality of toxins accumulation in the body, with an aim to rejuvenate and optimize the function of body organs.

American diet contains high saturated fat, trans fat, and other processively harmful substances such as sugar, caffeine, pesticides, additive substances, and less in fruits and vegetables.

These types of harmful substances are toxic.

Our body's detoxified organs including liver, kidney and skin try to get rid of them everyday.

However,  when they fail,  toxins in the body may cause a disruption of hormone production, damage of our body's detoxification organs and weakening of our immune system, resulting in hormone imbalance and development of chronic illness.

1. Raw sauerkraut
Sauerkraut is finely shredded cabbage and has been fermented by various lactic acid bacteria with distinct sour flavor.

The food contains high amounts of vitamin C, lactobacilli and other nutrients that improve blood circulation and increase level of oxygen in the blood stream.

Herbalists suggested that fermented sauerkraut also purifies the blood and protects skin against aging caused by toxins accumulation on the outer layer of skin.

According to the University of Medical Sciences, application of raw cabbage and sauerkraut juices exerted heart protective effect through stimulating the production of the key detoxifying enzymes(1), thus reducing risk of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, and a variety of other cardiovascular issues.

And sauerkraut, may be responsible for their chemopreventive activity demonstrated by epidemiological studies and in animal models(1).

2. Garlic
Garlic is nature's super food, in the list of healthy food of dietitians and herbalists used to strengthen the immune system, fight inflammation and infection caused by bacteria, virus, and chronic illness.

The herb or food is a blood thinner, blood purifier as well as increasing the level of oxygen in the blood and improving blood circulation.

According to the Instituto Nacional de Cardiología, injection of garlic exhibited a strong improvement of heart function through inhibiting metabolic syndrome, a major cause of cardiovascular diseases via antioxidant activities(2).

3. Dong Quai
Dong quai has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousand of years in improving blood quality and purity.

The Chinese herb also strengthens the immune system as it supports the body's removal of toxins in the blood.

In the evaluation of the Doxorubicin, an anthracycline antibiotic agent used in the treatment of a variety of solid and haematopoietic tumours, in induction of formation of metabolites that cause acute and chronic cardiac toxicities, researchers found that Angelica sinensis used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in China exerted a significant effect in vivo mouse model to protect the heart against doxorubicin-induced chronic cardiotoxicity(3).

The results were carried out in Male ICR mice treated with distilled water or water extraction of A. sinensis (15 g/kg, orally) daily for 4 weeks, followed by saline or doxorubicin (15 mg/kg, intravenously) treatments weekly(3).

4. Red Clover
Red clover, traditionally has been used with other herbs to support the quality of the blood by increasing the level of oxygen circulation of blood to transport nutrients to the cells needs.

It also is a liver tonic herbal medicine with functions in maintaining healthy bowel function and promoting digestion.

In the study of red clover flavonoids(RCF) protect against oxidative stress-induced cardiotoxicity conducted by the researchers at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College said, " RCF (also) improved the free radical scavenging and antioxidant potential, suggesting one possible mechanism of RCF-induced cardio-protection is mediated by blocking the oxidative stresss" and "RCF exerted cardioprotective effects against myocardial injury by inhibiting oxidative stress, cardiac myocyte apoptosis, and modulating MAPK pathways, indicating that RCF might be a potential agent in the treatment of heart disease"(4).

5. Burdock
Besides cleansing the liver, burdock also contains chemical compounds that strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation caused by bacteria and virus.

According to the assessment by echocardiography, arctiin, an active ingredient of biennial dried ripe burdock not only exhibited potent anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic activities but also protected the heart against cardiac hypertrophy induced by aortic banding (AB), and suppressed cardiac fibrosis and accumulation of collagen in vivo(5).

Truly, in the joint study lead by the Affiliated Hospital of Chengde Medical College, researchers showed esculetin, another chemical compound found in burdock demonstrates a significant potency in attenuated doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity(6).
