* Aloe Vera, The Herb and Plant That Inhibits Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOs)

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists from some respectable institutes suggested that aloe vera may have a potential and profound effect in reduced symptoms, risk and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOs).

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition characterized by endocrinologic diseases among reproductive-age women caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interferes with the function of the normal ovaries associated with a high risk for metabolic disorder(1) as resulting of enlarged ovaries(2), leading to hormone imbalance(excessive androgen and anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) )(1)(3)(4)(5), induced Hirsutism(6)(7), reproductive disorder(10(12)), risks of type 2 diabetes(9)(10)(11), metabolic syndrome(10)(12) and early cardiovascular disease(8)(13), acne(10)(14), endometrial cancer(18)(19),weight gain and obesity(15)(16)(17). The syndrome effects over 5% of women population or 1 in 20 women[1].

According to studies, women with PCOs after the reproductive age, are associated to continuously increase risk of type II diabetes, with no increasing altered glucose tolerance(20), CVD and hypertension(21)[1].

Women with PCOs may experience some of the symptoms of irregular, oligomenorrhea or absent menstrual periods, male pattern hair growth, acne, weight gain, obstructive sleep apnea, closure of the upper airway, causing stop breathing while sleeping, difficult to conceive, anxiety, emotional disturbance, poor quality of life, menstrual cycle disturbances, depression, autonomic dysfunction, problematic eating and general psychosocial dysfunction.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belongings to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

The herb is most commercial cultivated due to its health benefits.

Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes,...... and elevated of cholesterol, The herb also is one of many popular herb studied in scientific ways with some conflicted results.

According to the study by Desai BN, Maharjan RH, Nampoothiri LP.  70% PCOS women have abnormal serum lipid levels (dyslipidemia) and 50% of these women are obese.

Several classes of pharmacological agents have been used to manage dyslipidemia with serious   adverse effects.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include: amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

They all work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article of THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.

Application aloe vera in Charles Foster female rats induced PCOs by oral administration of non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor letrozole (0.5 mg/kg body weight, 21 days) exerts  a significant reductions of plasma triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels, and increase of HDL cholesterol by restoring the ovarian steroid status.

The Aloe vera gel treatment also caused reversion of abnormal estrous cyclicity, glucose intolerance, and lipid metabolizing enzyme activities.

Other study also indicated that Aloe vera gel formulation exerts a protective effect in against the PCOS phenotype by altering key steroidogenic activity. These results are attributed to phyto-components in the gel.

Dr.Pérez YY and the research team in the study of Effect of a polyphenol-rich extract from Aloe vera gel on experimentally induced insulin resistance in mice, said,  " the polyphenol-rich extract from Aloe vera. decrease significantly both body weight (p < 0.008) and blood glucose levels, calculated using the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)".

Also in the confirmation of above result, the study of Aloe vera leaves on blood glucose level in type I and type II diabetic rat models, vera leaf pulp extract suggested hypoglycaemic activity on IDDM and NIDDM rats, the effectiveness being enhanced for type II diabetes in comparison with glibenclamide.

Taken together, aloe vera can be used as secondary and therapeutic treatment in ameliorated all aspects of symptom, progression and treatment of  polycystic ovarian syndrome.

However, further data collection performed with human consumption during the course of the investigation are necessary to complete the picture of Aloe Vera, protective effect against polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) possibilities.
